Today we are joined by Robin Greenfield to discuss what it actually takes to forage 100% of your food and medicine for an entire year. No grocery stores, no restaurants and not even a garden to fall back on. Robin is living entirely from what he can harvest from the land and water, using wild plants, fish, wild rice, mushrooms, road killed deer and other locally available foods to sustain himself. This is not some weekend stunt either. It is the result of more than a decade spent building the knowledge and skills required to even attempt something like this.
We will talk about what Robin has learned from this experiment, why food and medicine are often growing freely all around us and why most people have lost the ability to recognize them. We will also get into his view that foraging is about far more than simply finding free food. To Robin it is a way to rebuild a direct relationship with the land, understand the plants and animals around us and restore some balance between what we take from the Earth and what we give back.
From there we will get into some of the larger issues behind his work, including the weaknesses of the industrial food system, food sovereignty and the idea of using foraging as a form of constructive resistance. We will also discuss his 1 Million Community Fruit Trees Initiative, his work helping communities create more local access to food and what he calls living by Earth Code. While Robin has taken his own experiment to an extreme level, he is not suggesting that everyone abandon grocery stores. His goal is far more practical, get people to learn what is growing around them and begin rebuilding skills that most of modern society has forgotten.
Robin Greenfield is an environmental activist who describes himself as a servant of Earth, humanity and the plants and animals we share this home with. His activism is built around action rather than simply telling other people what they should do. Over the years that has included living with almost no possessions, growing his own toilet paper and deliberately designing his life around simplicity, sustainability and reduced consumption. He has also committed himself to living on less than the federal poverty threshold as part of that philosophy.
Today Robin teaches foraging, leads educational programs and uses these extreme personal experiments to get people thinking about their own relationship with food, nature and the systems they depend on. His message is not that everyone needs to live exactly as he does. It is that even learning one edible plant, planting one fruit tree or becoming slightly more connected to the land around you can begin changing the way you see the world and your place in it.
