We have heard a lot of “AI is coming for your jobs” talk in the media and then the layoffs came just as predicted. But did AI really drive the layoffs? More did it even really have anything to do with them in any meaningful way? If AI is replacing all these jobs, where is the actual proof, is there any really there.
No, at least in 95% of all instances when examined not really. A few real cases have been seen but they are more like Unicorns for now vs. a herd of wild mustangs. In fact recently Fortune reported that “Thousands of CEOs admit AI had no impact on employment” and the 2026 enterprise AI adoption survey noted that “75% of executives admit their AI strategy is “more for show” than actual guidance“.
So what is actually going on right now? The layoffs are real, there are many examples of them in the thousands of head count or even tens of thousands in some instances of large companies like Amazon announcing more layoffs just a few days ago after laying off more than 30,000 between Sept of 2025 – January of 2026. So the layoffs are real but what about the claimed cause. Based on feedback from actual executives who seem to be honest only when their identity is protected it simply can’t actually be AI.
Join Me Today to Discuss…
- I recently hit on this due to a newsletter from Geoff Woods but that wasn’t the intent of his message
- The pattern is much bigger but very similar to the idea that raising minimum wage would lead to kiosks everywhere
- What AI can actually do right now…
- Speed. up work flows, only when used correctly
- Pressure test ideas
- Aid with high level thinking
- What using AI effectively right now requires
- Strong prompting
- Niche expertise
- An ability to push back
- Task/silo discipline
- What AI can’t do yet or at least be trusted to do yet
- Be trusted to take action without human approval
- Actually “think” with out being walked though the process
- Know when to make exceptions to policy vs. rigorous enforcement
- What is actually going on right now
- For the past 15 years cheap money and public optics drove growth and hiring
- CoVid and unlimited low interest money delayed layoffs that were on the way
- Elon Musk set the pattern by laying off 80% of the workforce while improving performance
- The concept of “adult day care” pretending to be jobs became obivioius
- CEOs and Execs cannot admit this publicly, they are now trapped by CapEx reality and no more free money
- They are now installing AI use mandates while not using AI themselves and creating purely performative AI iniatives
- They did however, spend millions even billions on AI solutions and other tech making the economics worse
- AI though does speed up work and leverage, new small companys are moving much faster than the Fortune 500, etc.
- Giant companies are just doing layoffs based on economic reality, one they can’t admit to so AI made us better is the excuse not the reason
- What this means for you
- You need to get good at using AI for what it is good at as it reflates to what you do
- The future is likely economic growth with rising unemployment, at least for a time
- If you could leave your job for 3 months cold and come back and nothing would be different you are in big trouble
- AI skills right now are a stand out on a resume, in 5 years it will be as meaningless as putting Excel and PowerPoint skills on your resume
- You need to see AI as what it is, a tool, not a boogey man or you will create a self fulfilling prophecy
- Get ready to be told AI failed and it isn’t going to do what they said it would do for the last half century, then it will do exaclty what we were told it would do next, so be ready

Looks like a technical glitch. Jack has been informed and it will get fixed… If you can’t wait, it is up on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F41vxSa2_0
Rectified thanks Jesse.
Sorry man it is fixed now.
Good deal if you’re already buying from those vendors regularly, the back catalogue of episodes alone makes it worth it for longtime listeners. Has anyone found a particular vendor discount that pays for the membership on its own?
