I wanted a proactive and fun show today and shows about useful plants are always subscriber favorites.  Last night on Episode 5 of Unloose the Goose we discussed the food system and it has a lot of this churning in my brain. When I was a kid my Grandfather taught me to tend our garden.  In many ways is was a lot like a small row farm.  Strait rows and a row for each thing.  A row of broccoli, a row of beans, a row of cucumbers, 8 rows of corn, etc. When I moved to Texas I started out … Continue reading →

Huauzontle – The Most Useful Plant You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

The Survival Podcast Posted on August 13, 2020 by Modern SurvivalAugust 13, 2020

Huauzontle is often referred to as lambsquarters and that is a generic name for a family of plants that huauzontle is part of. The scientific name for huauzontle is Chenopodium nuttalliae while the common variety of lambsquarters known to most people in the US is Chenopodium album. Think of them as cousins, rather than sisters. Huauzontle grows lower and more spreading, it puts on a great deal more seed and does so earlier. Native peoples of Mexico where this plant originated used the dried seed as a grain, one reason it is also commonly called “hairy amaranth” the the seed … Continue reading →

Joseph Simcox was awesome on yesterday’s show and after talking to him I looked up more of his stuff.  I found this amazing 3 part garden tour on YouTube and listened to all of it and selected 12 plants inspired by it for today’s show. This stuff is right up my alley and I know it is for many of you.  While you have heard me talk about some of these before many of them are brand new to TSP for sure.  Finding a new plant that provides food, fiber, medicine, etc. is like finding a new gem.  In many … Continue reading →

Long ago, we are talking 2008 here I started this podcast.  I wanted to talk about all things modern survival related.  To me nothing is more rooted in our survival than the ability to feed ourselves so I started talking about gardening.  Still with tons of guns and gear types showing up in the early days I wondered if garden type shows would be well received.  Not only were they but they became some of the most popular episodes I have ever done. Within that group shows dedicated to a group of plants you can or should grow, especially lesser … Continue reading →

Episode-1986- Perennial Vegetables for your Homestead

Today we are going to turn our focus on food production in our own back yards.  The plants I will describe here are wonderful for growing in just about any environment.  And even though they are perennials most will do find in containers and wicking beds, etc.  Indeed a few are custom made for such applications though normally not grown that way. Perennials are wonderful because they either come back on their own every year or they require very minimal effort to assure their return each year.  Many are even considered weeds or a nuisance by the unknowing.  Yep a … Continue reading →

It is March and that means planting or planning planting depending on where you live.  In any event if you plan on annual gardening by now you are, you have plants started or you will be likely buying starts. Today though we focus on what I call the “long term investment strategy of growing food”, of course that means perennials.  I tried to pick a good mix of over looked and misunderstood plants today.  Different plants the fill different needs, if times get tough or even if they don’t. When I wrote this title I originally called it 10 perennial … Continue reading →

Yesterday we had a fascinating discussion on the Facebook Regarians page about Mulberry, I know it is awesome, I am growing a lot of varieties but I didn’t realize how much it could really do.   In fact I considered just doing a show today called something like Magnificent Mulberries, because they do so much.  I simply realized though that I can’t take in enough on them this morning alone to do them justice, so that might come at a later date. I mean if you just begin to look into the above linked discussion the sheer volume of data is … Continue reading →
