Okay I am calling this series “Half Acre Homesteading” because marketing. The use of two words in a 2-3 word phrase is good at grabbing attention, think “Taco Tuesdays” or anything in that vein. You don’t need a half acre to make today’s show work for you, you can do most of this on even a postage stamp lot, many do. Likewise even if you have a lot more land, then this is what we call zone one design. Creation of a 1/20th – 1/2 acre system that you spend the majority of your activity on and hence it is … Continue reading →

Dan left his successful career in law enforcement and relocated his family from Atlanta to the Inland Northwest to pursue their dream of homesteading. Dan practices a primal lifestyle and uses permaculture principles and techniques to develop his new 10 acre homestead from scratch. His primary motivation in pursuing this lifestyle is to provide his family with the healthiest, high-quality, nutrient-dense, food while doing so in a sustainable, regenerative manner that enhances their resiliency and adds value to the community. Dan has taken Geoff Lawton’s online PDC, the PermaEthos PDC, and several other workshops under the sustainable agriculture umbrella. Dan … Continue reading →

Episode-1493- Adventures in Raising Ducks

Our duck activities have garnered a lot of requests for a full show on just ducks.  So today I will do my best.  I have been reluctant to do so for a few reasons.  The first is ducks are a new thing to me. I  grew up caring at least at times for chickens and geese.  I know their requirements well. While I observed lots of semi wild muscovies in Florida, I was not responsible for their care other than feeding them surplus fishing bait.  As of right now my direct experience in duck husbandry is about 8 months long.  … Continue reading →

In spite of the fact that yesterday’s show went two hours I realized at the end that many things I wanted to include didn’t get included.  For instance we didn’t cover breeding, incubating, brooding, slaughter and cooking. Today I am going to take a second pass at this.  I am going to give you some actual numbers about weights when it comes to the slaughter of young, non meat breed cockerels.  Likely it will have you never bothering to pluck one again. I am also going to provide you with a variety of ways to cook cull birds in order … Continue reading →

Episode-1396- All About Keeping Chickens

The Survival Podcast Posted on July 29, 2014 by Modern SurvivalJuly 29, 2014

I think perhaps the hottest thing in the modern homesteading trend right now is keeping chickens for both meat and eggs.  It isn’t hard to understand why!  The chicken and mankind go back thousands of years as allies.  I figure the natural fit is mostly that chickens will eat almost anything people will eat and many things we won’t. Hence you have a bird that lays eggs almost year round that in many places can make its living off your scraps and the surrounding land.  Once trained to a coop, which takes about a day on average it will put … Continue reading →

Episode-1379- The Profitable Small Acre Homestead

Homesteading is a dream for a lot of people, a some day idea.  Generally it is usually this way.  I need a job, so I need to be close to work, so we can’t afford a  huge place close enough, so ONE DAY I will have enough saved to make the move. This can and does work, but one day has a way of becoming a moving target, a carrot before the horse that keeps the cart moving yet never is tasted for many.  So my view is for some at least, the homestead can at least in time become … Continue reading →

Time for a simple old school style TSP that is basically a chat with Jack.  Today we take a look a what 2014 has in store for life at the TSP homestead.  The first year here was mostly an infrastructure establishment phase.  We installed swales and hugul beds.  We also built facilities for our livestock, systems to move they though the land, etc.  We installed garden ponds and many other systems. The entire first year of establishment is actually available in a 90 minute video we filmed that you can find here.  The key is the first year was like … Continue reading →

Time for a four parter, as I said I am making it up to you guys for lost time during recent travel and I suspect at least one show will not happen next week as well with the workshop and all. So today here is what we have on hand. First I am going to talk about why the “big news” about bitcoin is not big news in any negative way.  Of course I mean the IRS ruling that BTC is property and not currency.  Anyone running a business publicly collecting BTC should have greeted this announcement with a resounding … Continue reading →

A Dead Simple Fodder System

The Survival Podcast Posted on November 5, 2013 by Modern SurvivalNovember 5, 2013

I have had a lot of info on the show about fodder systems, including DIY and commercial systems.  The cost has run from a few hundred to many thousands of dollars. I wanted to start feeding fodder to my birds but could not see making a large investment to essentially sprout seeds.  People all over the nation spout seeds for their own use with a jar that simply has holes in the lid.  I have done this and it works just fine, I figured a 5 gallon bucket is just a big jar right? So I made my own system … Continue reading →
