Episode-1442- The Reality And The Hype of Ebola

ebolaToday we will look at the Ebola situation and discuss prepping for epidemic/pandemic in general.  I have received so many emails expressing concern and fear about Ebola, I must do this show.

The reason I have hesitated isn’t because we can’t learn from this situation.  It also isn’t because it poses no threat to the US at all.  Nor is it because Ebola isn’t a terrible disease.  No it is simply that there is so much hype, fear and bullshit going on about Ebola that I don’t want to add to it in anyway!  So perhaps I can mitigate it today.

Ebola is a serious life threatening illness.  It has the potential to do a lot of long term harm, even in the US but not by infecting millions as the hype would lead one to believe.  The reality is the biggest threat Ebola represents to developed nations is economic.

Join Me Today To Discuss

  • How long have we known about the virus called Ebola
  • How is Ebola spread
  • Are we “sending troops to fight Ebola”, yes but this phrase is misleading
  • Some statistics as of 10-3-14
    • Guinea, Liberia & Sierra Leone – 7470 cases
    • Guinea, Liberia & Sierra Leone – 3431 deaths
    • Guinea, Liberia & Sierra Leone – Combined population 22 million
    • Current percent of infection in these three nations .03%
    • Current percent of death in these three nations .0156%
    • Motor vehicle fatalities in the US in 2012 33,000 were .01% of the total population
    • Total deaths from all accidents in the US in 2009 was .04%
    • Malignant Tumors killed .18% of the total population in 2009
  • Why the greatest threat to the US is economic
    • Media hype
    • Over reaction
    • Legitimate concerns
  • Why the threat is minimal
    • Quarantine is very effective for Ebola
    • It must be spread by bodily fluids
    • The disease is not contagious until symptomatic
    • Ebola patients go from well to a little sick to extremely sick, very fast
    • If you have been exposed it is likely that you will know it
  • What to do about this threat
    • The same common sense preps as always
    • Minimum 30 days of food and essentials, 60 days is better
    • Be prepared to work remotely if possible
    • Good storage of essentials for animals as well
    • Be medically prepped, not so much for the disease as for any illness/injury
    • Relax, don’t worry, have a homebrew, seriously.

Episode-277- H1N1 Swine Flu Pandemic Facts and Myths

I have been getting a ton of questions, comments and concerns about a possible swine flu pandemic this fall so I thought it was time to revisit the subject.  It may interest you to know that officially right now there is a swine flu pandemic. Seriously the world health organization declared it long ago.

So what is coming, what can we expect from the media, from the flu itself, is it over blown, is it a real concern, what is the deal?  Tune in today to get the facts as I see them, you opinion may differ, if so please comment below.

I am also recognizing GuideOn.org as hero of the day for the work they are doing to help childern who have lost fathers or mothers during military service.  Please help these guys out if you can this is one of the more noble causes I have ever heard of.

Tune in today as we discuss…

  • Pandemics as a whole are real and they are a primary threat to keep an eye on
  • The big concern about (H1N1) is speed of transmission not lethality
  • You should be prepping now Swine Flu or no Swine Flu
  • The media is going to “lather this up”, what that means to you
  • Inside information – the State of Texas is not even testing people positive for influenza A for H1N1 any more
  • To get maximum participation of the population we will be told vaccines are in “short supply” not forced to take them
  • Why I will not get a vaccine this year, period
  • This is going to have an impact on you if you get sick or not even if the flu itself is not that big a deal
  • The response by media, government and sheeple will be the biggest problem
  • Why this may help to once again tank our economy at least short term
  • The big danger is the next pandemic and the “cried wolf” syndrom
  • My advice, stay prepped, be happy

Episode-191- Survival Reaction Mentality

Today we will continue to talk a bit more on swine flu or more accurately what is starting to look like a massive overreaction by government.  Our larger topic though is going to be about a simple question…

In a survival situation which response is better, a swift instinctual response or a well planned logical response?

With that in mind today’s show notes are very brief just tune in and hear my take on this question along with an interesting story about what I learned when I coughed (more accurately cleared my throat) at Starbucks recently.  Another quick question what do you think is more dangerous right now, the flu or the response to it by government and the general public?

Episode-188- Swine Flu H1N1 Pandemic Risk

Today we discuss the recent events around the H1N1 variant of swine flu currently on every radar screen from local news to the CDC.  Is the big pandemic finally here?  Don’t get ahead of yourself there is a real risk of epidemic or even pandemic here there is also a large probability that this will end up being a non event and overreaction may be worse the the flu itself.

Today we discuss..

  • This is an H1N1 and so was the Spanish Flu but these are not the same
  • Have you found holes in your preps because this has made you evaluate them
  • What effects might this flu have on the world beyond the illness itself
  • Should you cancel travel to Mexico
  • Is the media overreacting will that back fire long term
  • No one died from this in the US yet, does that mean we are safe
  • Why has the flu been fatal in Mexico but not the US
