Today we examine 10 technologies that anyone can use, build on and develop products and services with. Or they can be used in your own live to simply live a better life if times get tough of even if they don’t. 9 of the ten are what many would call “low tech solutions” but a lot of high technology techniques can be used with them for automation and improved results.
The world is changing in what we can call “The Synthesis Age”. A time when technological innovation is moving at a parabolic rate up. Tech like Artificial Intelligence, automation, biotechnology, robotics and energy tech are growing expotentially. At the same time more people are homesteading, setting up small businesses, doing self directed learning and home schooling than ever.
I call it “The Synthesis Age” because we’re witnessing a unique moment where cutting-edge technologies like AI and advanced energy systems are accelerating rapidly. At the same time, people are reclaiming older, resilient ways of living like growing food, building local businesses, and creating value outside the mainstream system.
This has happened many times throughout history. The shift to agriculture was one of the earliest. We developed tools, irrigation, and crop systems while still relying on foraging and hunting. Later, during the Bronze Age and Iron Age, new materials and techniques reshaped society, but people still lived close to the land.
The printing press sparked an explosion in knowledge while much of Europe remained rural and decentralized. Even in the Enlightenment, you had scientific breakthroughs happening alongside traditional farming and handcrafts. What we’re seeing now is another version of this recurring pattern. New technologies emerge and spread, but rather than fully replacing the old, they coexist and compliment one another. What’s different today is how conscious and intentional that synthesis is. People are actively choosing to combine digital power with ancient skills. We might also call this “modern survivalism”.
