Many people come to preparedness from a scarcity mindset. At TSPC we have always pushed back on that. In episode one I said that preparing from fear blinds us to the good in the world. Yes, bad things happen and worse things can happen. That is always true.
But the way we romanticize those who lived through the great depression does not build resilience. Especially those at the bottom of society. I respect their grit. My grandparents lived through it on modest incomes. What I learned from them was simple. It was hard. Very hard.
As a kid I never thought to ask, “what would have made it easier”? They told me what made it bearable and how they adapted, which helped me, but the better question is how to reduce suffering, not just endure it. And even though I never asked, I think I know their answer now. They would have said some version of…
To have built more wealth during the good years that came before.
We talk about the great depression as if it is behind us, but did we ever really recover? The success formula has not changed much. For instance, the stock market did not truly recover from the 1929 crash until 1985. And when measured in purchasing power, the long term returns of the S&P 500 are far less impressive than experts claim.
So let me ask you this. Was it easier for the average worker to afford a home and raise a family in 1985, or is it easier today in 2025? Looking at that honestly forces two questions.
Did the great depression really end when World War II began as we were taught?
And
If not, have we simply adapted to be comfortable inside a system that started declining before we were even born?

- Simply put unless a disaster kills you, you are always better off if you are wealthy then if you are poor
- Much of what we prepare for will never happen while much of what we fail to prepare for does happen
- There is little hope of hitting a target if you do not first define the target
- We tend to be more motivated by the negative than the positive, this is both wrong and by design
- No matter how much class warfare and rage bait is thrown at you, what you do will always be the biggest source of your success and failure
- There is a massive sin against yourself if you do not save and invest, the sin is greatest when we are our youngest
- You work harder for money when young
- You worked under worse condition when young
- The money has more time to grow and multiply when young
- You were closer to the edge when young leaving less room for squander
- Habits are formed early so you have less economic discipline if you start later in life
- What should you be doing
- Set clear and concise goals for both achievement and personal improvement
- Save money and invest it in assets
- Consciously build a business or a career with full intent all the way though
- Think about things in blocks of sevens from seven hours to seven generations of impact
- Never buy a thing because you might need it unless you can truly classify it as insurance
- See dollars only as potential power (potential energy) and assets as true power (kinetic energy)
- If your goals do not scare you at all, raise the bar
