Today I’m joined by a guy I’ve known for almost 30 years. Back in the 90s I was selling and designing data centers for companies diving into the digital deep end. One of those companies was Broadcast.com, and one of my main contacts was Patrick Seaman. He was employee number one at a company that helped kick the doors open on internet streaming before most people even knew what it was. We’ve kept in touch ever since. And now, he’s got a new book out called Streaming Wars that tells the whole story from the inside.
If you’ve ever streamed a live game, listened to a podcast, or watched a show on demand, this conversation connects the dots back to where it all started. Patrick wasn’t just in the room. He was one of the guys building the damn room with Radio Shack parts, duct tape, and grit. From those early days of streaming audio over dial-up connections to scaling a platform that served up 60,000 hours of content, this is real-world tech history from someone who lived it.
But this episode isn’t just about the past. Patrick’s still building. He’s got a new company solving real-time audio delays at live events, and we’ll dig into what today’s entrepreneurs can learn from the first wave of internet disruption. We’ll talk about platform risk, monetization, decentralization, and how to think ahead without getting eaten alive by hype.
If you’re a builder, creator, founder, or just someone who wants to understand how we got here and where we’re going next, don’t miss this one. Patrick’s lived the shift from dial-up to AI and he’s still in the fight. You’re gonna get insight today that you won’t find anywhere else.
Special Note – Today’s podcast is about 90 minutes long but about the first 30 minutes are missing. StreamYard had issues and the first part is so glitchy as to be unlistenable. If you want to try to listen to it the unlisted Youtube video of it is here.
