It is that time again. We may still be nine days from Christmas and have a lot of winter in front of us but spring will come before you know it. In much of the country seeds should be started indoors some time between Feb 1st and the end of that month. Folks I know it will sound crazy but February 2026 is just barely more than a month away.
Now is the time to evaluate the equipment you have and upgrade or add the things you want in your system this year. Select varieties of seeds to grow and source the ones you don’t already have. Figure out how many of each variety you need based on the bed space you have and your goals for 2026.
Most years I tend to do this show in late winter to early spring when the time is now. This season I decided to get ahead of it so you can make the most of some of your coming down time in getting ready for the coming garden season.

- I add about 10%ish pearlite mainly because it shows me if I got a good mix
- When planting seedlings I often amend a bit further by the batch
- Dr. Earth Fertilizer – link (remember MSB can order direct with a discount)
- Rock dust type adjuncts – one example
- If you are buying in soil I recommend Fox Farms Soil with my adjuncts plus something like this – Cavern Culture
- I usually spray my seedlings with some compost extract and liquid kelp once they have at least two sets of true leaves.
- Trouble shooting
- Slow / Low germination
- Leggy
- Poor color
- Mold, slime, etc.
