Episode-2506- Modern Survivalism and Your Six Primary Survival Needs

All the way back in 2008 I launched this podcast and I wanted a term I could hang my hat on so to say. I wanted something sane sounding and yet I wanted it to be accurate as to preparedness at the same time. Within the first few weeks I came up with the concept of “modern survivalism” and hence, “modern survivalist”. At that time I searched for exact matches of both terms and none came up. So I anchored down on that phrase. Today it is everywhere but I really believe TSP is the genesis of that concept.
As happens now if you ask people they have a lots of definitions of the phrase, but as the initial source I want to remind you guys what I meant when I started using it. Simply put that while we have a ton we can learn from primitive and bush craft techniques that we have no reason to ignore or fail to use modern technology. This can be some traditional skill set like learning land nav with a map and a compass, but also using GPS tech when available.
However, it goes beyond that, many “doomsday type preppers” are big on going all in on gold and silver and shunning more traditional investments. The modern survivalist take a far more balanced approach, using stocks for what stocks are good for, silver and gold for what they are good for and real estate for what it is good for. We do this while shunning consumer debt and yet knowing in some business ventures you are stupid if you don’t leverage debt. In short we use everything available to us and create redundancy for failures.
When we look at true survivalism, as in continuing to exist and no dying, we can see some real genius in the bush craft survival concept of 5 needs being food, water, shelter, fire and security. As modern survivalists that don’t go our of our way to be lost in the woods though we modify one of them and add a sixth. Our new list looks like this….
- Food
- Water
- Shelter
- Energy (fire is only one form of energy)
- Security
- Health and Sanitation (shitting in the woods is easy, dealing with the waste of a family in the burbs is more complicated)
Today we discuss modern survivalism, common sense prepping and evaluation of our six primary needs…
