Today, Joel Ryals returns to TSPC to discuss why self defense is a system, not just a tool. Too many people buy a gun, carry a knife, take a class, get a dog, or bolt some security hardware to the house and think they are “covered.” They are not. Tools matter, training matters, dogs can absolutely matter, but none of them replace awareness, judgment, mindset, and the ability to make decisions when things go sideways fast.
Violence is not clean, fair, predictable, or bound by the rules people imagine when they train in safe environments. Real violence comes with stress, confusion, multiple variables, and often multiple attackers. So today we dig into what people get wrong about violence, how stress changes performance, where most self defense training comes up short, and how to build a layered system that gives you a real chance when it matters.
Joel is the founder of Fortress K9 and a specialist in real world personal protection, especially when it comes to integrating trained protection dogs into a larger defensive strategy. He is a former Deputy Sheriff in Hillsborough County, Florida, and he brings that real street level experience into everything he teaches. He also has a military background with multiple combat deployments, which shaped how he views decision making under pressure, chaos, adaptability, and the ugly reality of violent encounters.
Through Fortress K9, Joel trains dogs to be more than intimidating animals with a bite command. His focus is control, stability, clear decision making, and dogs that can function as reliable assets in real situations involving weapons, multiple attackers, and high stress environments. His work challenges a lot of nonsense in both the self defense and protection dog industries, especially the idea that aggression or appearance equals capability.
Joel is also the author of Beyond the Bite, where he lays out the gaps in how protection is commonly understood and taught. His goal is to help individuals and families build realistic security systems that increase safety, confidence, and peace of mind. Today we will talk mindset, tools, dogs, awareness, training failures, and what people should do next once they realize self defense is not a product you buy, it is a system you build.
