I grew up in my high school. years in rural Pennsylvania. Much of what my family did at the time is what is considered classic prepper behaviour today. We had a garden, we canned and stored a ton of food in the basement, we hunted and fished as much for sport as for food. We made jerky and sausage from venison, stews from all of the odd cuts of both hunted and store bought meats. We organized berry picking groups in blue and blackberry seasons and spilt up shares t the end of the day.
My grand parents kept chickens and one huge mean ass Chinese guard goose with them. We heated with both a coal stove and and old school coal furnace and steam radiators. A generator kept power on during outages. If something broke we almost always fixed it before calling a guy. If we did call a guy it was usually a friend who was later repaid with a favor or perhaps some deer sausage and a few jars of chow chow. Our family was low income but we were responsible with money. When emergencies came somehow there as always enough to cover them.
So to me preparedness was kind of baked into my mindset from an early age. Today, when I talk about preparedness my mindset may be a bit broader but it is from the same philosophy. Preparedness is how prepared you are as in the above but it is also things like insurance, how well you get read for a presentation and how well you plan our retirement. It is a deep pantry, a determined mindset and series of defined plans. However, use the word preparedness today and even though it has been off the air for almost a decade now, people think of stupid shows like, “Doomsday Preppers”.
So today ask yourself two questions before you dig into this episode…
- How can any responsible adult, actually be responsible if they do not have preparedness as an ideal?
- Why do the government, industry and the media so wish for you to remain unprepared?
Join Me Today to Discuss…
- What does preparedness even mean
- Three scenarios that should make you think of one word
- A serious presentation to a leadership team when seeking a promotion
- A hike on a 15 mile loop trail
- A well paid professional with a family to take care of
- Some forms of preparedness no one has a problem with
- Getting ready for key tests like the SATs or MCAT or LSAT, etc.
- Planning a route in advance for a long road trip
- Insurance on your car or your house or other property
- Insurance for health care and long term care
- Saving money for retirement in a 401K or similar
- So why do people not respect and practice things like
- Insurance for your food supply
- Keeping your past professional relationships intact
- Hedging our wealth with some alternative investments
- Having a BOB incase you must evacuate and a plan for the same scenario
- Ensuring you are always drinking high quality water and will do so even in a disaster
- Developing new life skills constantly
- Having a means of self defense and the training to use it
- Having alternative means of communications
- The reality is simple, those who are not prepared feel fear, people in fear are easy to control
- Ask yourself simple, don’t I deserve more, don’t those I love deserve more as well, am I really being responsible
