Backyard Rabbits with Amy Lambrecht – Epi-3529
Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 1:35:06 — 27.2MB)
Today Amy joins me to discuss raising back yard rabbits and other permaculture and homesteading topics. Amy started homesteading for health benefits and has found that an more in the homesteading lifestyle.
Amy was born and raised in New York City, Amy was fascinated by nature and sought to learn all she could about the natural world. Now, she is living her childhood dream, homesteading on 1.7 acres in North Alabama.
Her homesteading journey was sparked by her marathon and triathlon ambitions (she is a locally competitive runner) that led her to the paleo diet and the evils of the food industry back in 2009. Falling down the “rabbit hole” enabled her to find the Survival Podcast among other prepper platforms and she quickly realized she needed to pivot her life to be able to raise healthy clean food for her growing family.
Soon after finding her property nestled in the hollow behind Monte Sano State Park, she enrolled in Geoff Lawton’s online PDC in 2013. Completing her certification helped her design her property over the last 11 years. A very important aspect of that plan was incorporating meat rabbits.
Amy finally settled on raising the American Breed rabbit which is a heritage breed that was a favored meat rabbit in the early 1900’s. Eventually this led to her involvement in showing to learn how to select for the best traits. Her herd has now won multiple awards at many ARBA competitions. Last year her rabbit won Best of Breed at the 2023 National ARBA Convention. In addition, she was awarded the Rabbit of the Year, and Herdsman of the Year in her national Breed club.
Amy has not only provided healthy meat rabbit breeding stock for many years, but also works to help others succeed with rabbits. She offers dispatch demos, homestead tours that focused on rabbit feed systems, rabbit care clinics and shows how to cook and prepare rabbit meat.
She also started a rabbit club last year called, The Southern United Rabbit Fanatics (SURF). It’s goals are to promote to the public the value and versatility of rabbits for fur, food, fertility, fiber, fun and friends. The Club events and Facebook group educates locally and online how to ethically raise rabbits and utilize their benefits for show, meat, companionship and exhibition.

This episode was AWESOME! I am trying to get into this as my yard is so tiny. Rabbits are about the only thing I can do. And thanks to TSP, I’m doing pretty good with quail. I’ll never forget the guy who had a couple hundred quail in his garage and who is in an HOA condo.
