Episode-2408- The Design Science of Permaculture – Part One
Podcast: Play in new window | Download (19.7MB)
We have not really dived deep into the topic of Permaculture for a while so we are going to do that today. For those who have studied Permaculture for a while today might be just a bit remedial but I will try to make it interesting for everyone. We are going to start out with the prime directive, ethics, zones of design and the layers of a forest. These four components drive the entire system thinking process of permaculture.
We will then discuss 6 permaculture principles and how they apply to the modern survivalist life style. We will then finish up with some myths and misconceptions about Permaculture. In doing so I think you will realize that Permaculture is so much more than a way to grow food naturally.
Join Me Today to Discuss…
- Permaculture’s Prime Directive and Three Ethics
- The only ethical decision is to take responsibility for our own existence and that of our children.
- Care of the earth
- Care of people
- Return of surplus
- The only ethical decision is to take responsibility for our own existence and that of our children.
- Zones of Design
- Zone 0 – inside your shelter
- Zone 1 – where you naturally step every day
- Zone 2 – where you are weekly
- Zone 3 – main crops of agriculture
- Zone 4 – large scale farm forestry
- Zone 5 – nature, hunt and gather only
- Rules of Zones
- You don’t have them all on all properties
- They should get progressively larger
- They are not circular they are specific to a property
- They are in the end subject to the designer not the other way around
- Spend most of your initial effort on zone 1 or zone 1-2
- The layers of a forest
- Canopy
- Sub Canopy
- Shrub
- Herbaceous
- Ground Cover
- Rhizome
- Vine
- Key Takeaways About Layers
- They exist so if you don’t fill them nature will
- They scale up and down
- Layers exist in natural and man made systems
- Six Key Permaculture Principles – There are many more.
- Observe, interact and accept feedback
- Integrate rather than segregate
- The greatest yields are always on the edges of systems
- The forest is the greatest of all teachers
- Catch, store and rebound energy
- The more restriction on a design the more eloquent the design if the designer is up to the task
- Permaculture Myths
- It is only perennials
- It is separate from techniques like say aquaponics, rotational grazing, etc.
- It is only for ______
- Final Thoughts
This begins a multi part series on Permaculture, next week we will discuss, sectors of design, earth works, guilds and 6 more design principles.

Thank you so much for this episode. I have begun incorporating permaculture onto my little suburban homestead, and with permaculture I feel like I have finally found my true passion. This handy overview of permaculture was very helpful and inspiring.
Thanks again, jerk.
Knocked it out of the park with this one Jack! After years of studying I still can’t believe all I’ve forgotten about permaculture design. Your non-gardening examples were excellent and helpful.
Just learning pattern recognition alone will make you a fortune by avoiding many a folly in finance and real estate!
It isn’t proven science or hippy vodoo, it’s just how stuff actually works in the natural world.
Just downloading it now…. on the road 4 hours a day…. great subject matter –
Thanks Jack for all you do.

We listened to the 2019 Permaculture series on a get-away trip around the thumb of Michigan… It opened up a whole new vocabulary for us to explore and interact with the world. I am fascinated with the systems-thinking mentality within the home, as well as in the “garden”. I recognized patterns of Zones within the home, and am interested in focusing on getting our primary living space into a place of beauty.
Thank you for your efforts.
