TSP Rewind – Recovery Equals Inflation – Epi-200

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes.

Today’s episode was originally, Episode-156- Recovery Equals Inflation and originally aired on March 9th, 2009.

The following are the original show notes from that episode

Right now everyone is wondering when the economy is going to recover.  They are waiting for it as a tribesman awaits rains coming to the desert.  Oh won’t it be a glorious day when the Dow reverses course and begins a sustained climb, the banks open the mortgage food gates and “good Americans” do their patriotic duty and spend money?

Hold on, my problem with this is in reality this is the recovery!  The nation turned into a bunch of credit, debt and spending addicts.  What you see now is the nation in rehab!  300 million addicts coming off the spending spree and going through detox!

It won’t last!  The Federal Reserve and their drug cartel (banks, credit card companies and financing organizations) might not be willing to kill their clients with an overdose, yet they can’t allow them to go strait either.

Soon the peer pressure and dealer pressure will start up again.  Come on honey the Jones family just got a new car, the Smiths at work just got a new house and their are buyers for our house now.  Besides I just got a raise and we have saved up a lot of money.  Let’s enjoy life, you can’t take it with you!

The TV and Radio and the Dancing Girls at Weather.com will advertise “low mortgages that anyone can qualify for”.  The good times will return!  With them, inflation like we have never seen before.  When it happens don’t forget the pain of today, don’t go back to being an addict.  “Stay the course”, the one your grandparents set, value your money, save for a rainy day and buy what you need, not what you covet.

Today’s show discusses these concepts, explains the fallacy of a decline in the M3 Money Supply and will help you deal with a recovery that will actually be a relapse of the addiction and lead to a bigger crash then we just went through.

TSP Rewind – That Which You Can Change – Epi-199

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes.

Today’s episode was originally, Episode-2256- That Which You Can Change and originally aired on June 24th, 2018.

The following are the original show notes from that episode

Most people are familiar with “The Serenity Prayer“.  This prayer was actually written by the American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971).  The long version is seldom spoken of and it is much more what you would expect from a truly religious prayer.  You can learn more about that if it interests you here.

The version most know, the one on necklaces, coffee cups and used in many 12 step programs is very simple and yet very profound, even for those like myself or are non religious people, is simply states…

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference.

Like I said this prayer is incredibly well known and even practiced by some atheists who simply remove any higher power from the concept and consider the substance of…

Accept what you can’t change,
and change what you can.

This is the concept that led to Steven Covey’s famous circle of influence vs. your circle of concern.  I was thinking about all this recently and I realized in many instances these two pieces of wisdom often fail to work as a team, because people simply tend to focus on the first, and therefore expect the second to happen.

Such as if you simply stop worrying about or focusing on that which you can’t change, you will only be left with what you can influence, so you will have an impact on those things.  The thing is, that actually does work to a degree and that can be bad.  Why?  It can lead to not doing enough to better your lot in life.

I think the flaw for most people that consider the wisdom and apply it to a degree of simply, accept what you can’t change, and change what you can, is they fail to do enough to even identify “that which can be changed”.

Join Me Today to Discuss…

  • What is “lifestyle design” and why it isn’t boring or tedious
  • What the only alternative to lifestyle design is, and why it is terrifying
  • Influence vs. control and the flaw of not separating the two
  • The wisdom of accepting that which you can’t change
  • The dangers of not identifying that which you can change
  • Seven areas to identify that which can be changed
    • Your approach to other people (social health)
    • Your approach to recreation and fun (emotional health)
    • Your approach to employment or business (productive health)
    • Your approach to knowledge and skill (educational health)
    • Your approach to giving back and charity (contributory health)
    • Your approach to meditation/contemplation/prayer (mental health)
    • Your approach to exercise/diet/activity (phyical health)
    • Your approach to wealth/investing/savings/debt (financial health)
  • The key is knowing
    • What you can vs. can’t change
    • What you should change
    • How you should change it

TSP Rewind – Understanding the Canine Brain – Epi-198

Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 1:27:59 — 20.1MB)

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes.

Today’s episode was originally, Episode-2209- Understanding the Canine Brain and originally aired on May 1st, 2018.

The following are the original show notes from that episode

I have done shows on training dogs before, likely the best one was Episode-1797- Training Dogs to Fit in on the Homestead.  Today’s show is in that vein but not really about training, rather how to understand dogs so you are a better trainer and companion to your dogs.

I want to say as well today, that I don’t consider myself a dog professional, a dog psychologist, a dogologist, a dog savant, etc.  I do consider myself to be a “dog person” or in my wife’s misspoken term a “dog animal” (yea she really said that once).

By this I mean I have what people perceive as a “way with dogs”.  Dogs that won’t listen to others will often listen to me almost instantly.  Dogs that do not trust strangers will often trust me fairly quickly etc.  This is something many people consider a “gift” but it is really just an understanding.  In short I know how dogs think, so unless the dog is just an asshole dog (they do exist), someone has really ruined the dog or the dog is practically feral, I can generally instantly form a bond with it.

Tune in Today to Learn…

  • Wild canine pack structure and why it isn’t an exact coralary
  • How domestic dogs differ from say fully tame, raised from puppy wolves
  • How every dog is “dangerous”
  • Why your dog absolutely NEEDS you to be in charge for it to be happy
  • What trainers really mean by “calm assertive energy”
  • Some of my rules when training, correcting, and working with dogs
    • No correction absent a connection
    • Believe the dog will do as you want at all times
    • Limit training to the dogs attention span
    • Reward about 5 to 1 as a ratio of affection to food rewards
    • Canine teeth do not touch human flesh (puppy and play exceptions)
    • Don’t get angry the dog will know you are angry but not why
    • Stop talking to your dog in a baby voice, most of the time anyway
    • A command is a command, not a request
    • Accept that some breeds have intrinsic characteristics (limitations)
    • Dogs train each other, this is both good and bad
    • Your job in 6 words (make success easy and failure difficult)
    • Yes old dogs can learn new tricks, they usually want to
    • Physical correction can be uncomfortable but should not be painful
    • Don’t “shame a dog”, it is pointless and stupid, the dog doesn’t get it
    • Never harm your relationship and trust with an animal, ever
  • Final thoughts

The following are the original show notes from that episode

In the spring and early summer talk a walk in the garden section of any big store or even typical smaller plant nurseries.  Mostly you see peppers, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and a few other veggies and herbs.

There are so many other options though and many are tougher than our stand alone favorites.  Fore instance so many people love growing tomatoes but in many areas they are plagued by early and late blight.  You can usually get a decent yield and then you hit a wall, well why not grow tomatillos instead.  They make fantastic salsa, are great grilled and are pretty much immune to most disease and pests.

Today we walk though 12 such options for your garden and in most of the country there is still time to get these guys up and running for your fall planting.

TSP Rewind – Planning Your Future When the Future is Uncertain – Epi-196

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes.

Today’s episode was originally, Episode-2032- Planning Your Future When the Future is Uncertain and originally aired on June, 27th 2017.

The following are the original show notes from that episode

We talk a lot about what I call “lifestyle design” around here.  When people hear that term they get the general idea, because the words are common.

  • Lifestyle – The way in which a person lives.
    ~
  • Design – Purpose, planning, intention and thought behind an action.

So lifestyle design means to put purpose, planning, intention and thought into how you live your life.  So yep people generally get the basic concept, what people usually struggle with though is designing a lifestyle for today that is resilient for tomorrow.

I think we have all had those moments, we are happy, really happy with our life as it is, then one or two things change and we are off the rails.  Sometimes these are external factors like a job loss.  Other times they are internal factors sticking with employment perhaps we realize we hate our jobs but hey it pays the bills.

Those are only two examples, and no one can plan for everything but today things are even more complicated.  We all know the next few decades will have more flux in them than anything man kind has yet to experience.  AI and automation will replace thousands of jobs, economic reality will be hitting hard for many governments and technology gaps will make finding jobs harder than ever.

Join Me Today to Discuss How to Plan For an Uncertain Future

  • Major shifts are coming in
    • Education
    • Technology
    • Manufacturing
    • Transportation
    • Everything
  • What has always worked will still likely work
    • Entrepreneurship
    • Adaptability and Flexibility
    • Hunting/Gathering/Growing
    • A solid conservative to risk balance
    • Saving
  • The basics of lifestyle design
    • Define the goals
    • Define the steps to get there honestly with yourself
    • Prioritize the steps
    • Begin taking action
  • If it is that simple, why don’t more people do it
    • It requires sacrifice
    • It requires honest with yourself
    • It requires taking responsibility for where you are
    • It requires the courage to do what most wont
  • Final thoughts

Today’s episode was originally, Episode-1981- Stranded Vehicle Successful MacGyver Stories and originally aired on April, 11th 2017.

The following are the original show notes from that episode

Today we are doing something we have not done in a while, a truly listener generated show.  Where the community comes together to tell stories of how they accomplished something, saved money or say in this case got out of a jam.

Recently a buddy got stranded on the far side of BFE (Bum F’d Egypt) with a dead battery and used a great solution to get home.  (tune in to hear about it)  This made me remember a few of my own and an idea came up, with a community of this many people surely there are many such stories.

So if we share them we take all that collectively gained knowledge and spread it across the community.  Over time it will likely save time, inconvenience, money and possibly even lives.

Today’s episode was originally, Episode-1986- Perennial Vegetables for your Homestead and originally aired on April,18th 2017.

The following are the original show notes from that episode

Today we are going to turn our focus on food production in our own back yards.  The plants I will describe here are wonderful for growing in just about any environment.  And even though they are perennials most will do find in containers and wicking beds, etc.  Indeed a few are custom made for such applications though normally not grown that way.

Perennials are wonderful because they either come back on their own every year or they require very minimal effort to assure their return each year.  Many are even considered weeds or a nuisance by the unknowing.  Yep a plant that requires minimal work, self propagates and is good to eat we have come to see as a weed.

“Bloody Dock” – A Beautiful and Edible Perennial Most People Have Never Heard Of

Join Me Today To Discuss…

  • How we define perennial vs how we should define it as growers
  • Twelve Plants you should be growing for trouble free food production

TSP Rewind – How Preparedness Leads to Liberty – Epi-193

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes.

Today’s episode was originally, Episode-1991- How Preparedness Leads to Liberty and originally aired on April, 25th 2017.

The following are the original show notes from that episode

If you go find my TSP forum profile you will see a bit of text that says,

Liberty is precious, fight to keep it!

I guess it is about 8 years since I put those words on my profile and my view of the value of liberty has only increased since that time.  Since day one I have said the real mission of The Survival Podcast is to educate people to the concepts of Self Sufficiency, Self Reliance, Independence and Liberty.  To me those four ideas can’t be separated.

Join Me Today to Discuss…

  • First let’s define the four pillars of TSP
    • Self Sufficiency – The percentage of your needs met by your own systems
    • Self Reliance – The duration in time you can live well without systems of support
    • Independence – The ability to control your own life on your own terms
    • Liberty – The freedom to fully exercise your independence
  • Why people choose bondage over liberty
    • Programming and conditioning (domestication)
    • Fear
    • Misdirected morality
  • How Preparedness Leads to Liberty
    • It removes fear
    • It directly addresses programming and domestication
    • It requires independent thought
    • It is counter to the norm, and requires action
    • It sooner or later pays off, so you know it works
  • The things we should be taught are our personal responsibility as children
    • Food
    • Water
    • Shelter
    • Energy
    • Security
    • Finance
    • Health
    • Education
  • Why the system will never take this approach

I rail on the millennial generation a lot, more accurately I rail on their parents (my generation) for not teaching them life skills and frankly reality.  Well, you can bitch about things or your can provide solutions, and I try to be a solutions guy.

I want to be clear, that these skills alone will not fix the problem, there is a philosophical difference that is a problem as well.  In the generations before parents put themselves where they belonged, at the head of the family.

They were first parents and secondly their child’s friend.  I will say a bit on this today, because it needs saying but if you take the path of teaching your kids these skills, perhaps even first learning a few yourself I think you will find you have to do what many parents no longer do, lead.

This is the crux of the problem, our nation is desperately lacking leadership, and we keep looking beyond ourselves for it.  Well trust me when your 12 year old daughter is wielding a Glock or a skill saw, you will see the need for leadership instantly.

Join Me Today To Discuss…

  • Why I chose this topic for today
  • How the mental shift lead to the skills being lost
  • Why we must restore individual leadership in America today
  • My list of 20 things is not the list of “THE 20 THINGS” – this is important
  • 20 things every child should be able to do by age 14
    • Possesses basic economic literacy
    • Be able to teach what they know to others with confidence
    • Be able to identify edible and dangerous plants in their area
    • Grow plants and propagate them
    • Safely use firearms
    • Use basic hand tools (mechanical and wood working)
    • Use basic power tools (drill, saws, etc.)
    • Cook (this doesn’t mean make Kraft mac and cheese)
    • Catch fish local to their area
    • Be able to argue a point with basic logic
    • How to do laundry
    • Self directed learning
    • How to train a dog
    • Basic self defense
    • Basic entrepreneurial thinking
    • How to use a shovel, a hoe, a pick and a rake
    • Start a fire, keep it safe and put it out
    • Repair and maintain a bicycle
    • Practice basic first aid
    • Safely use a ladder
  • Final Thoughts – Don’t like my list, add, subtract, append, make your own

Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 1:36:01 — 22.0MB)

Today we have another episode of  “Outback with Jack”.  These podcasts will be generated though live steam sessions done early early in the morning.  These will have an approximate start time of 0830 -11:30 CST.

These podcasts will are a lot like old school TSPC episodes on a variety of topics, many quite topical from the news and from social media.  Each show will covers a bullet point list of 5-12 topics that I will handle rather rapid fire.

From there we will talk about what ever the live audience comes up with.  These livestreams will then be converted to MP3s and put out in the standard TSPC Podcast feeds under the new series title of “Outback with Jack”

Today we are going to end things before I leave for Self Reliance Festival and vacation with an all things practical episode, focused only on the things you can do to make a real difference in your circle of control.

Todays Subjects Include…

  1. What if you just got your homestead, want to get stated but we are now hitting brutal summer temps
  2. Why I suggest using a bulk head for your overflow when making wicking beds
  3. Using a plow, a tiller etc. to put in contour based garden beds
  4. Integrating Crypto payments into your website – link
  5. When doing hydroponics what is most important when it comes to depth in the growth tray
  6. Thoughts on the new Federal “Super Carry” – link
  7. Will a broody goose hatch ducklings
