How F’d is Our Food System – Epi-3232

The Survival Podcast Posted on January 23, 2023 by Jack SpirkoJanuary 23, 2023 15

Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 1:50:28 — 31.6MB)

So the title of this episode should be “How F’d is Our Food System and what can we do about it, but that is too long.  You guys know me though I don’t poke problems without corresponding solutions.  Today though you likely think we are going to dig into supply chains and droughts, not really.  I am talking food quality today.

I ran a poll on Twitter today asking simply, how much uranium (yes URANIUM) do you think is annually spread onto our fields via contaminated phosphorus globally.  The answer will be on today’s show but not given in the text notes to keep the poll honest.

What I could not it into the tweet though due to limits is three really horrifying facts.

Fact One – Uranium is added by the ton to our fields annually.  This has been going on for decades.  Bill Mollison covered it in these PDC lectures from the 1980s!  So that is at least 40 years.

Fact Two – The government, big ag, etc. are all aware of this, they know full well they are doing this.  Once that uranium is in that field you are never getting rid of it, ever. The half life is measured in the billions of years.

Fact Three – Absolutely nothing is being done to stop this or even slow it down.  The precent of contaminated phosphorus is fairly constant and we use more of it for the same effect every year.  Basically the powers that be have concluded that the risk of radio active food is worse than the risk of not enough food to their power base.

As bad as this is, it is only one part of the problem.  We will dig into it today along with how a solution that is thousands of years old may be a huge part of fixing or at least mitigating our problems with a system that is honestly on its’ last legs.

Today we Discuss…

  • Shocking facts about our food supply
    • 12 million tons of uranium is dumped on our farm fields annually (has been for decades)
    • Glyphosate has been found in the vast majority of urine samples of people in the US – link
    • The US Midwest alone has lost 57 billion metric tons of top soil in the past 160 years – link
    • Farms tend to loose top soil at about 1cm a year, natural soil is created at about 1cm per 100 years – link
    • The world is on plant based diet already, so is the US (5 primary crops)
  • Thoughts on solutions
    • My soil fertility philosophy can be summed up simply as build, hold, increase
    • We need back yard gardens, small producers doing it right, etc. but we need mass change as well
    • Unfortunately we do not control the mass system so we must do what we can with what we have
  • The lessons of tera pretta and biochar
    • A word about biased studies and FUD
    • Our time preferences today are far to short (think in centuries)
    • How native cultures made terra preta (we think, may be, we may not really know shit)
      • Dig a pit
      • Add carbon and set on fire
      • Cover pit to control 02 flow
      • Spread on fields
    • What we find in terra pretta
      • Pottery shards – image from todays stream is here
      • Fish, shells and animal bones
      • Beneficial bacteria and fungi that we don’t find together anywhere else
    • How we can use biochar
      • We don’t really need to charge it up, we need to make it ideal for inhabitation by microbes, the easy methods
        • Compost tea
        • Composting
        • Cycle though animals
        • Yes we can and likely should add minerals (like rock dust, kelp, etc.)
      • Biochar does many things
        • Locks up toxins – soil remediation
        • Hold 7X its weight in water
        • Provides homes for microbes
        • Reduces nutrient loss
        • In some places is still fertile after centuries with almost no soil “management”
    • Biochar Outputs Include
      • Biochar
      • Wood Vinegar
      • Syn Gas
      • Heat
    • Biochar is not “the solution” it is a solution and function stacks perfectly with
      • Rotational grazing
      • Fodder systems
      • Composting
      • Garden and market garden scale systems
      • Dealing with existing waste streams (For example shitty wood chips from commercial pruners)
    • Getting the main steam on board is where biochar shines
      • They now have to meet their own carbon offset BS
      • They know their sheep (you) will starve if they don’t fix the problem
      • It plays to modern virtue signaling
      • It makes allies of adversies
    • What else can we all do in our own back yards, what are your ideas

Etekcity Lasergrip Digital Laser Temperature Gun – Item of the Day

The Survival Podcast Posted on January 23, 2023 by Modern SurvivalJanuary 23, 2023 13

tempgun

Special Note – These are on sale today for 15% off!

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Etekcity Lasergrip Digital Laser Temperature Gun.  This thing is cool it is basically a very accurate digital thermometer you use by just pointing it at a surface and pulling the trigger.  It emits a small red laser dot, you put that dot where you want to know the temperature and just like that you know the temp.

So what can you do with that, oh so much.  Here are just a few things you can do with a temp gun.

The other day my buddy and I were working on my new aquaponics system and were wondering how much water the rain tanks were holding off of my barn.  Point this thing at it and look for where the temp falls off, there is your water line.

Cooking something that says to saute at say 220 degrees for your pan temp, how exactly do you get that info, well point, pull the trigger and done.  Same thing with your grill, find those cool and hotter spots on that grill for cooking and moving food to cooler safe spaces.

Want to know how much cooler that area under shade or shade cloth really is, not just the air temperature but the surface temps where say your live stock is living, point and pull and you know.

How about finding either warm or cool micro climates for planting trees, shrubs, etc on your property.  Or how about finding out how successful your micro climates you create on purpose are?  For instance the berms we put in our west pasture are on average 20 degrees cooler than the ground surface of the surrounding area, how do we know, with one of these.

What about finding hot or cold loss areas around your house so you can shore up energy losses.  As we all know the best ROI on energy isn’t solar panels, it is increasing efficiency of what ever system you have for energy.

Do you know how well your AC is working.  Try this take this and point it at your air intake and get a reading.  Let your AC run for a few minutes then take a look at the temps on your ACs output vents.  The difference in temps is the amount of cooling your AC is currently giving you.

Is your wood burning stove hitting a solid 400-600 degrees for a good efficient burn, are you sure, you could be sure you know.

So how many things in the world do this much for under 30 bucks?  Seriously?  One word of advice is measure temps at about 1 foot from the surface for best accuracy.  That is how the unit is calibrated to work best.

So check out the Etekcity Lasergrip Digital Laser Temperature Gun today and let me know your thoughts on other things that it can do in the comments below.

Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TspAz.com

P.S. – This is the Model Number 774.  It has a temperature range from -58? ~ 716? There are other models that have a range that goes lower and higher, like the 1022d that sells for about 35 dollars.  The 1022d has a range of -58°F ~ 1022°F.  It is only about 15 dollars more but I see it this way, 15 bucks is 15 bucks.  I have nothing in my life that I will need to measure a temperature over 716 degrees.

In any event if you look at a variety of Etekcity Temp Guns you will see a wide range of prices, it all comes down to the temp range they operate in.  So if you can see a need to be able to read 1000 degrees consider another model.  If however you see 700 degrees as working for you save the 15 bucks.

Also let me say a word on accuracy of these inexpensive guns.  Last summer we had some work done on our HVAC system.  The tech had this gun from my old company I used to work for, Fluke.  It is 200 dollars and my gun and his were within 1 degree as we tried both on various parts of the house.  Fluke’s gear is considered some of the best in the world and this gun is every bit as accurate for a fraction of the price.  So keep the 175 bucks in this case!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is always an extreme pleasure to have Geoff Lawton on the show. Geoff is who I received my PDC certification from, he is also my biggest mentor. It is my firm belief that like attracts like. The common bond Geoff and I share isn’t really permaculture it is a fundamental desire to help others and to do so mostly by teaching.
Geoff Lawton - Permaculture Artist
Geoff Lawton – Permaculture Artist
Today I had planned to discuss a lot of technical questions with Geoff, how do you ____ etc.  But quickly we moved into a much more high level discussion.
How would Geoff design a solution for the entire state of California for drought proofing.  What is the 3rd ethic really all about, why should we not politicize it?
Why are live stock essential to repair the damage to our eco systems?  Why are humans necessary to repair the same damage?  Today we look at not our own individual survival but the survival of our ecosystems and way of life.
TSP Rewind – Peak Food is the Real Long Slow Emergency – Epi-224
rewindToday is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes.
Today’s episode was originally, Episode-1532- Peak Food is the Real Long Slow Emergency was first published on March 11th, 2015.
The notes below are the original notes from that episode.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Unfortunately Prayer Won't Fix this Problem!

Unfortunately Prayer Won’t Fix this Problem!

Peak oil? Whatever, there is a LOT of oil and gas and we are rapidly figuring out more and more alternative energy strategies.  It isn’t that it is not a problem, it just isn’t the big ass mastodon in the room.  What, you say mastodons are extinct, good point, it was mine as well!

Peak water?  Yes, yes, this too is a problem but there are literally thousands of solutions to this problem.  No matter how moronic current policies are, get into a real pinch and known solutions exist.  We can indeed fix this, it isn’t even really that hard.

Peak money?  Wow if that is a problem  you don’t understand money, it is created from thin air, its real vs. phoney value backing is the economy in which it circles.  Money we indeed can create, as it is a symbol for energy, vs. the underlying energy itself.

Peak industrial production?  Nope that isn’t the big one either.  Hungry people will indeed work for wait for it, food, because yes, that is where we are going next!  The reality is we have more crap than we need, people are good at building stuff and no this one alone will not end civilization.

Now look if any of those four are your pet peaks, relax your crack and stop yelling at the screen, I absolutely acknowledge those things are areas of concern.  Problems that can be solved but problems that will cause massive harm in the time it takes to fix them.  Just none in and of themselves lead to the cliff that could be the 6X extinction event!

No the reality is we are running low on many resources but they all lead to one place, the dinner table!  Just realize that name MIGHT end up being pretty accurate, as many may have to skip breakfast and lunch not so far into the future.

Take each of these other problems and look how quickly it harms an already stressed food supply.  Unlike the people in Idiocracy we still know plants need water not Brodo, and well, you need water to make Brondo anyway.

Oil?  How about this, if you are an American right now it takes 400 gallons of fossil fuels to feed you every year.  Note that that doesn’t include the little bit of gas you put in your Prius to go to Whole Foods, or what is burned to keep your fridge nice and cold, just the energy that gets the food to the point where you buy it.

Can we do some basic math folks?  No common core needed.

Gasoline has about 31,000 calories per gallon multiply it by 400 and you get what?  12,400,000 calories of energy to feed you.

Now leave aside what the average person should eat, the average per person consumed in the US is about 2,800 calories.  Multiply that by 365 and with fatties, shinnies and regulars averaged out that is 1,022,000.  That means 12 million calories are being used to provide you with about 1 million, do you get that?

What you say the food production energy ratio isn’t that bad?  You are correct of course but we export a lot of grain, low quality food to the rest of the world, that doesn’t eat as good as we do!  Those are the numbers that feed Americans the amount of food we are currently using.

Money?  Again we can fix that because it is only an illusion, but what a powerful illusion it is!  When money is screwed up, so is banking, financing, industry, etc.  In the end though, what hurts you isn’t not going to a job or even living in a shelter, it is not having food in your belly.  As this one also covers industrial production, we will let that one go for now.

Again it isn’t that these are not problems, it is they all contribute to the problem of peak food, and brothers and sisters, peak food has its own problems.

Join Me Today As I Discuss…

  • Why the biggest fears, money, oil, etc, are only the scratch, not the infection
  • How fungi decline alone threatens our food supply
  • All the dying species are symptom that we see is isolated problems
  • The big problem we have degraded a full third of quality soil on the planet
  • Desertification is a problem, our solution is to try to grow in deserts
  • The average person has never produced an ounce of food and doesn’t know how
  • Every society that has ever collapsed was built on annual agriculture
  • What is the solution
    • 110 million homes x .25 acres = 27.5 million acres of high end production to be tapped
    • 1.5 million acres just in “city parks” in America (link)
    • Pecans live an average of 40 years, walnuts 250
    • Chestnuts, figs and hazels live over 1,000 years
    • Cows, chickens, pigs, ducks, geese, all eat grass and forage
    • Rice, barley, wheat, corn can be grown sustainably
    • An amaranth seed weighs a about a micro gram, and grows to 10 feet in 4 months
    • We can grow food in deserts sustainably (link and another link)
    • Water stores in earth better than in pods, dams and tanks
  • We don’t even know what is really possible, but we do know what works for now, so do it!

Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 1:28:32 — 25.3MB)

On Friday I covered the unholy link between DaVita and the American Diabetes Association.  I do a quick review of that today then we will dive into how the government now says Lucky Charms are twice as healthy as steak, and a fake egg fried in seed oil is healthy but a real one in butter is to be avoided.  I’m not kidding and it will all get worse from there.

Join Me Today to Discuss…

  • Rewinds are coming don’t skip them! (Ben Falk, Neil Spackman & Geoff Lawton)
  • A quick reminder about how a dialysis company recommends sugar to diabetics
  • Doctors are recommending surgery and drugs for obese children – link
  • The new study for a new food pyramid – write up on it here
    • Took three years to complete
    • Touted as “the most comprehensive and science-based nutrient profiling system to date”
    • Let me state before I proceed not everything in it is a lie and these are extremes (truth sells lies)
    • To be encouraged items include Frosted Mini Wheats, Chocolate Covered Almonds and Honey Nut Cheeroes
    • To be moderated items include Lucky Charms, seed oil, fake eggs, Almond M&Ms, Pineapple in Heavy Syrup
    • To be minimized items include ground beef, real eggs fried in butter, cheddar cheese, steak
    • Lucky Charms scored a 60, steak a 33
    • Ground beef is a 26, steak a 33, canned beef a 43, because this makes what sense?
  • The Sugar Industry has bought influence and convinced science sugar is good
    • Nutritionist say women should limit sugar to 6 tsp a day (women) and 9 tsp a day (men) (24 and 36 carbs)
    • This number does not include other carbs only refined sugars
    • Some claims made in sugar funded studies all can be verified here
      • Coke spent 130 million for a study saying exercise is more important than diet
      • Children who eat candy weight less than children who don’t
      • Grape juice (36 grams of sugar to the cup) is “good for your brain”
  • This is simply the pattern it is in everything….
    •  11 Food companies control 95% of what you see in a grocery store – link
    • 6 companies control most of the media a 7th completes it no one ever talks about them, strange – link1 – link2
    • 10 companies control most of the worlds pharmaceuticals – link
    • 8 companies control most of the world’s agriculture – link
  • The wealthy do not own, they control, the pattern is clear, they control society
  • What do you do about it
    • Think always before you act
    • Grow and local source food
    • See sugar as poison, I am absolutely serious
    • Give Zero trust to government, media and industry, ZERO TRUST
    • Get out of the big cities they are the next thing to be colonized by “smart tech/AI/etc.”
    • No matter what you eat avoid refined and highly processed things and cook your own meals
  • They lie, constantly, always, consistently but we choose to believe it, or to not believe it
  • The real conspiracy is that people with this much wealth and power are worthy of any trust

Price Alert – DeWalt 20V 5.0-Ah Max Batteries are on Sale

The Survival Podcast Posted on January 16, 2023 by Modern SurvivalJanuary 16, 2023 6

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s instead of an item of the day I just have a price watch alert for all you DeWalt owners out there like me. Everyone knows the tools are buy once cry once but the real expense is the batteries. And all of us seem to at times need just 1 or 2 more batteries to get though our projects without waiting on a recharge especially when they involve circular saws and angle grinders, man those things drain a battery don’t they.

I tend to buy big on Ah’s due to this preferring 5 – Ah batteries for most things. Today the two pack of DeWalts 20V 5.0-Ah Max Batteries is on sale for 138 vs. 239. It is a huge discount of 99 bucks or 42% off and if you need DeWalt batteries my advice is buy them when on sale. Because DeWalt doesn’t do sales often and when they do they don’t last long. So if like me you are a black and yellow fan, pick up some more power for your tools today at a discount of 42%.

Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TspAz.com

P.S. – As always when I mention DeWalt I include this video below and the following information. I have read tons of bad reviews for DeWalt exist all around “the batteries wont’ charge so I returned it”.

This is due to DeWalt not being clear about how to use their chargers, an installed base of users spent 30 years where they just dropped a battery into a charger. The newer batteries must be “clicked” into place and for some stupid reason (likely ego driven) DeWalt refuses to fix the problem.

I have been talking about this a long time and one of my most popular videos barely over 1 minute long, explains it perfectly and has resulted in hundreds of “THANK YOU” comments with almost 400,000 views. Here it is!

This video has been reviewed by several contacts at DeWalt and while they still have not fixed their documentation, I have confirmed customer service reps at DeWalt are now independently advising callers to view it.

I am trying to help you DeWalt!  Stop being bullheaded.
