On Episode 3088 of The Survival Podcast we are joined by my close personal friend Nick Ferguson of the Expert Council and Home Grown Liberty.  We actually have Nick with me in the TSPC Studio today.  Nick is a long time permaculture consultant who has been doing on site and remote consultations since 2014.

In the past two years he has noticed a significant shift in the motivation, urgency and over all mood of his clients.  Today we discuss that along with the social, economic and supply chain issues that are driving this shift, along with what it means and what can be done about it.

Heads Up on a Hell of a Deal on a Bad Ass Briggs & Stratton Inverter Generator

The Survival Podcast Posted on May 5, 2022 by Modern SurvivalMay 9, 2022 11

NOTE – This deal has expired.  If/when it returns I will let you know.

If you asked me my biggest mistake when I got into prepping I would say it was that I did not instantly buy a large powerful generator.  I corrected that really fast and over the years I have to say the prep in my life that has paid off the most times has been my generators.  Storms happen, electric companies underestimating a cold snap happen, trucks and back hoes hit power poles and lines.

Now this particular generator is not cheap and it is not something everyone should run out and buy just because, but I am bringing this to you today because this deal is so damn good.  This is the Briggs & Stratton P4500 Power Smart Series Inverter Generator which has 4500 starting watts and 3700 running watts.  This means it is not going to even stutter running two refrigerators, your TV and a bunch of lights along with a fan.  If you run your fridge on and off you can easily run a portable AC perhaps two, in a room or zone of your house during a power outage.

It is not super quiet but it is far more quiet then a lot of generators in this class.  Big thing is this generator is $797 right now with free shipping.  Retail is listed as 1299 bucks on Amazon and this generator typically retails with a street price in the mid 1100-1200 dollar range.  And in fact is listed for that amount right now at Home Depot. In any event this generator has only been this low a few other times on Amazon.  Last time was almost a year ago.

I would rank the Briggs Inverter Generators just under Honda Inverter Generators.  Is the Honda better?  Yes. Will you care?  Assuming you maintain your generator I don’t think you will.

Now let me explain the value that represents.  A Honda EU3000 Series Generator will set you back about 1800 bucks.  Again just to be clear I am not saying the Briggs is as good as the Honda, but the Briggs puts out more running watts (about 700 to be exact).  It is reasonable on noise levels at 60dBA, the EU3000 from Honda comes in at 57dBA not a huge difference.

Gas usage is similar and Briggs is not some chop shop product with no support and a bad reputation.  All in I am going to rate this Generator at about 90% as good on quality as the Honda Equivalent for 40% of the price.  And it provides 35% more energy output as well again for 40% of the price. That is a hell of a price to value ratio. You really want me to kill the Honda EU3000?  Here is the death blow, you could buy two of these Briggs Generators for 1670 dollars.

Then you would have two generators with a total output of 7400 total running watts.  You have redundancy if one goes bad or if one is needed elsewhere.  And you have still spent 1400 less dollars!  That buys of lot of other prepping gear and enough gas to easily coast though a very long black out.  I know people rave on the Honda’s, but when I do a cost analysis like this on them, I would never recommend you buy one unless here it comes, you hate money!

Always be frugal, never be cheap!

The only reason that I am not getting this generator at this price for myself is I already have 3 generators and frankly every time this one goes on sale I am tempted to own four.  The deal is that good.

So I am again not saying everyone should drop 899 bucks on this thing today this deal is good but it isn’t buy one even if you don’t need one good.  I am saying if you have not yet acquired a powerful generator for your preps and have been waiting for a deal, this is a DAMN good deal.  They do not get much better than this one.

When I ran this last time it went this low it got the official Shawn Mills “buy it now” seal of approval!

I personally believe in pairing up a larger generator with at least one small inexpensive one as a back up.  This generator for most people would qualify fine as your “big generator” within my recommendations.  I ran this item today simply because it is one of the best prices I have seen on it.  I don’t know if this deal will last very long or not.

What I can say is when it drops under 900 bucks it does not tend to stay that cheap for very long.  And frankly think about the fact that this item ships free on prime.  900 bucks delivered to your door.  When your next black out happens, will you be ready?

Simply put if this deal works for you don’t wait in the words of Shawn Mills from out Expert Council, “buy it now”.

Davidson’s Earl Grey Bulk Tea – Item of the Day

The Survival Podcast Posted on May 3, 2022 by Modern SurvivalMay 3, 2022 3

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Item of the day Davidson’s Earl Grey Bulk Tea.  Davidson’s has some of the best deals in organic teas on the market if you buy bulk.  This tea is wonderful and can be brewed with either a french press or simple tea infuser.  If you prefer your tea in a conventional tea bag Davidson’s does make this same tea in bag form, you can find that here.

So what is Earl Grey Tea other than the favorite toddy for Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Star Trek universe.  Earl Grey tea is a tea blend which has been flavored with the addition of oil of bergamot.  Bergamot is a variety of orange.  This citrus fruit is often grown in Italy and France. The rind’s fragrant oil is added to Black tea to give Earl Grey its signature pungent punch. So you would think the favor would be orange like.

It really isn’t, to me the addition of bergamot oil creates a velvety feel and a flavor that is more like well, bee balm than anything else I can think of.  I am not sure but I think this may be why bee balm is also called “wild bergamot”.  As clearly an orange and a member of the mint family are completely unrelated, the similar property of each in tea is the only reason I can see for the commonality of the name.

Anyway I love this tea for its flavor, and I love Davidson’s for their value.  You get a full pound of 100% organic tea for about 15 bucks.  One teaspoon of tea makes a cup, so let’s just say that is a lot of cups of “Tea, Earl Grey, Hot” to go though.   Anyway I make this tea at two teaspoons to full french press batch which is two large cups.  As that is more than two 8 ounce cups I do my spoons heaped just a bit.  Pour over boiling water from my electric kettle and let steep for 3 minutes.

Now here is why I love a french press for tea.  At three minutes when you push down the plunger, you are effectively separating the tea from the water, so your tea will not become too strong or overly tannic.  I then sweeten with lakonto (perhaps honey once a week) and at times enjoy a bit of lemon with it as well.

So give this stuff a try, it does have caffeine but far less than coffee.  If you want a decaf version they have that too but I don’t really care for decaffeinated teas myself.  Caffeine free is one thing, decaffeinated is another.  So check out Davidson’s Earl Grey Bulk Tea today and I think you will enjoy it even more that Captain Picard does, I mean this is the real deal not some phony baloney replicated knock off.

TSP Rewind – Financial Strategies for the Modern Survivalist – Epi-190

The Survival Podcast Posted on May 2, 2022 by Jack SpirkoApril 25, 2022 2
https://www.survivalpodcast.net/audio/2022/rewind/epi-190-tsprw-gun-hunting-wisdom.mp3

Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 1:27:20 — 20.0MB)

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes.

Today’s episode was originally, Episode-1577- Gun and Hunting Wisdom of our Fathers and originally aired on May 19th, 2015.

The following are the original show notes from that episode

I want to talk about guns today, but a bit differently then you might expect from a “survival podcast” to do.  No ARs, no concealed carry and no ninja like accessories.

No today I want to tell you about the gun wisdom I learned at the hands of my grandfather and father as a young man.  The stories, lessons and realities that made me love guns as the tools they truly are.

You may be shocked to learn I didn’t grow up hearing much about the 2nd amendment or gun rights.  Where I grew up boys hunted squirrels with pellet guns for the table until they hit 12, at that time they could get a hunting license and were handed a 22 or a old single shot Sears brand 20 gauge and told to bring back more now that they had a better gun.

The concept that anyone would ever seek to take a gun away from a man who had never harmed a person with it, was so foreign as to not even be discussed.  While there is a lesson in that alone, we shall save it for another day.  Today I want to take you back to the 1980s in a small town with only two main roads, called RD1 and you guessed it RD2.  The two is Joenstown, the boy is still called John, the squirrels are fat, the deer are plentiful and the year is 1986.

Thirty Years, Three Thousand Miles, Three Hundred Thousand Rounds, Still Knocks a Dime out at 30 Yards.

75 Bucks when it was Brand New – 30 Years, 3,000 Miles, 300,000 Rounds, Still Knocks a Dime out at 30 Yards, What Else Could You Ask For?

Join Me Today to Discuss…

  • My first lessons were in how to clean a gun
  • Guns sat in a cabinet, it wasn’t locked, nothing bad ever happened
  • If your rifle has killed a deer every year for a long time, you don’t want a new one
  • The 35 Remington is something special, almost no one knows that
  • Your dad’s 30-06 is an “elephant gun” but it is good for deer too
  • Don’t close one eye, you have two eyes for a reason boy
  • You have natural talent, it will be great when you develop skill to go with it
  • If someone hands you the exact same model of gun but it isn’t yours, you should know it
  • You can’t eat the horns, but it is certainly okay to have some pride in them
  • Hearts are great fried in butter and onions but no one here eats brains
  • Any man or boy for that matter can kill a deer, the skill is in butchering
  • Your shot gun and 22 will often feed your more than your rifle
  • A handgun is mostly for when a rifle isn’t practical
  • Always trust the dog, he is never wrong, even when you are sure of it
  • Never shoot anything in front of your dog that you don’t want him to hunt
  • Pack a lunch and let the yokels do the work
  • If you drop one duck of a pair, be patient and wait for the second to set its wings
  • Trust yourself, the gun will respond correctly if you do
  • See the target not the sites
  • Keep your head down on that shotgun and keep the gun moving
  • If you wound it, you find it, if you fail to find it, you learn from it
  • Bullets are cheap, if it doesn’t go down, shoot it again
  • Every trip into the woods is a scouting trip and a time to learn
  • The true value of a gun is in the hands of the man holding it
  • The guys that go home early, don’t eat well
  • When you start to see what others miss, you are figuring it out
  • Enjoy the experience, it is special, most won’t ever understand that
  • One day you will understand what we are trying to teach you

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes.

Today’s episode was originally, Episode-1860- Fun, Training and Family Time With Airsoft Guns and originally aired on August 30th, 2016.

The following are the original show notes from that episode

Today we delve into the misunderstood world of airsoft.  I think airsoft has an unfair and undeserved stigma among many of the “tactically minded” due to the majority of enthusiasts being gamers.  While I have no interest in the game aspects of airsoft I feel even this community is misunderstood and many unfair assumptions are made about them.

Today though I will focus on what I call “Airsoft for Practical Training”.  By that I mean real world training that benefits the average civilian that either carries a gun for defense or keeps a gun in their home for the same purpose or both.

While I love things like IDPA and IPSC shooting and I have great respect for the many tactical training schools like my good friends Frank Sharpe Jr. and James Yeager run, or even the big time schools like Front Sight provide, I don’t find what they teach particularly valuable to the average guy with a job, two kids, wife and a dog to protect from a group of thugs or an armed intruder in the middle of the night.

The KWA LM4-PTR is a "Professional Training Rifle" Designed for Military and Police Training with Airsoft.

Join me today to discuss…

  • The reason people dislike airsoft
    • It is just a toy
    • Gamers that think they are heroes
    • It isn’t realistic (rate of fire, machine guns, etc.)
  • Why people should love airsoft if they are gun owners
    • Cheap practice
    • Practice every day
    • Realistic practice (in ways you never thought of)
  • The basics of airsoft guns
    • Springers
    • AEG (automatic electric guns)
    • Gas (blow back and non blow back)
      • CO2 and “Green Gas”
    • Pellets, yes they matter
      • Just forget .12 they are flatly junk and ruin guns
      • .20 is the most common and the “industry standard”
      • Generally, .25-.36 can be more accurate in many guns
      • The heavier they are the more they cost
    • Guns I own and what I like about them
      • WE Tech 1911 (Link to this Gun)
      • KJWorks Sig 226 (Link to this Gun)
      • WE Tech G19 (Link to this Gun)
      • KWA LM4-PTR (Link to this Gun)
      • Umarex Walther PPQ M2 (Link to this Gun)
    • Getting started
      • Springers are cheap and do work for draw and shoot practice
      • I would avoid AEGs for practical training
      • I would avoid CO2 due to long term economics
      • Almost all “green gas” guns are blow back gun
      • Get an adapter and run propane
      • Use your carry holster if you carry
      • Don’t get bogged down in deep tech specs
      • If your gun doesn’t have a “clone” get something close
      • Search google for “model name airsoft gas blow back”
      • Why it is hard to find some specific GBB Clones
    • Some training ideas
      • Every morning/evening quick shoot
      • Practicing after dark with a light
      • Play “knock out” with your kids
      • Draw and shoot, make safe, return to holster, repeat
      • Variations on draw and shoot
    • Target ideas
      • Professional airsoft steel
      • Sheet metal cut outs
      • Heavy steel – (nice because it works for lead pellets too)
      • Heavy plastic jugs
      • Cheap pots and pans (Walmart, Dollar Store, Goodwill)
    • Spreading gun rights and gun ownership with airsoft

  • Airsoft GI
  • Airsplat
  • Airsoft Extreme
  • Redwolf Airsoft

Some Good Low Cost Guns and Accessories on Amazon – Like I said on the air I had lousy luck with the few people offering GBB guns on Amazon, use the stores above for that.  But here are some things you can get on Amazon.

  • Colt 1911A1 Spring Gun – likely the best cheap gun made in Airsoft

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes.

Today’s episode was originally, Episode-2443- Financial Strategies for the Modern Survivalist and originally aired on May 21st, 2019.

The following are the original show notes from that episode

Today we are going back to one of the fundamentals of modern survival living, that is financial management and debt elimination.  Economics and the reality of unfunded liabilities, the national debt along with everyday financial worries is the number one reason people get into the preparedness lifestyle.

Sometimes it is from a practical approach but just as often it is panic and fear based. Today we set aside panic and establish a base of common sense and pragmatic techniques to build, preserve and protect wealth.

Join Me Today To Discuss…

  • Why saving is more important than investing for most people
  • The lessons of alternative energy
    • Start with increasing efficiency (income)

  • My rules for truly becoming financially resilient
    • Increase your economic IQ – daily for a year at least
    • If you want to believe education is an investment, you should treat it like one
    • Save money, determine what you can save, then do a bit more
    • Reduce expenses in small ways, put at least half of it away
    • Create additional income (business, second job, more hours)
    • Save money (cash on hand, cash in bank, CDs, bonds)
    • Become a land owner on some level
    • Put some money into silver/gold (5% of NW)
    • Put some money into bitcoin/crypto (a little each month or quarter)
    • Become a producer of food, yes, really
    • Plant trees
    • Buy the best you can afford once vs. cheap every few years
    • Become highly skilled at fixing your own problems
    • See opportunity everywhere because it is everywhere
    • Become a great cook
    • Invest in only what you understand and only when it makes sense
    • Get out of the way of telegraphed punches, yes time the market
    • Pay off all debt asap, I know I said it before and I will keep saying it
    • Become adept at using Excel, it never lies
  • Final thoughts – The game is rigged, it is a big club, you are not in it!  But you can still win the game.
