Our Portable Outdoor Shower Set Up – Item of the Day

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 5, 2023 by Jack SpirkoJune 5, 2023

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is our Portable Outdoor Shower Set Up consisting of two items, first the Gasland Tankless Portable Shower.  The second item is the Alavantor Shower Tent.  Pairing these two together along with a water source lets you have a hot shower just about anywhere.

So let me tell you about this great combo that’s been a game changer at our annual workshops for the past five years. I’m talking about a portable propane-powered tankless water heater and a spacious shower tent. These two have been a hit with our campers, providing them with some of the comforts of home while camping at Nine Mile Farm.

First up, the portable tankless shower system. This compact unit is easy to install and heats up water fast. We’re talking about going from a chilly well water temperature to a comfortable warm on demand shower.  This unit runs on a standard grill propane tank for the heating element, while D cell batteries power the sensor. It’s a simple, straightforward setup that doesn’t require any other power sources or modifications.

Now, let’s talk about the shower tent. It’s spacious, easy to set up, and provides all the privacy you need. It’s got a skylight to let in natural light, and it’s made from thick, durable material that can withstand the elements.  The shower tent also comes with a separate tarp for the bottom, so you can keep your feet clean and dry.

But here’s a pro tip: if you decide to get this tent, make sure to watch the video on the Amazon sales page that shows how to fold it back up. While it’s easy to do, it can be a bit tricky until you learn the exact order to get it folded back up.

But the best part? Both the water heater and the shower tent are portable. That means you can take them with you wherever you go, whether it’s camping, living off the grid, or hosting a workshop on your property.  So whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a prepper, or just someone who appreciates a good hot shower, this portable tankless water heater and shower tent combo is definitely worth the money. They’re solid pieces of equipment that are built to last, and I highly recommend them.

The uses here are endless.  Camping is obvious but what about when the power is out at home and your hot water heater is now just a tank full of cold water?  One of my good friends J.R. Haley, who always helps us with set up at workshops liked it so much he bought one and it is his primary shower at his barn conversion on his homestead.

Also the tent is useful even when it isn’t a shower stall.  How about a changing room at the beach, camping etc.  Also great as a porta-potty tent if you need one.  So give the Gasland Tankless Portable Shower and the Alavantor Shower Tent a shot and you absolutely won’t regret it.

Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TspAz.com

P.S. – I haven’t done a video of this set up but this guy on YouTube did a great job showing the shower system, how to set it up, how it works, etc. Check it out.

Lessons from 15 Years Behind the Mic – Epi-3312

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 1, 2023 by Jack SpirkoJune 1, 2023 2

Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 1:55:57 — 33.2MB)

I have been podcasting for 15 years and decided now was a good time to simply discuss what podcasting itself has taught me. It’s been a wild ride, a journey of self-discovery, growth, and endless lessons. When I first started, I was armed with nothing more than a cheap MP3 recorder, doing my podcast in the car on my commute to work. But after a year and a half, I took the plunge, quit my job, and set up a proper studio. Over time, I’ve learned that podcasting is much more than just recording conversations; it’s about connecting, inspiring, and evolving.

In this episode of “Lessons from 15 Years Behind the Mic,” I’m taking a trip down memory lane, revisiting the highs and lows, the challenges and victories, and the many lessons learned along the way. I’ll share the wisdom gleaned from countless hours behind the mic, the mistakes that brought valuable insights, and the rewarding moments when a listener reached out to say how an episode made a difference in their life. It’s a candid reflection of my journey and a way to give back to the community that has given me so much.

I believe that the power of podcasting lies in its ability to foster connection and create a sense of community. Over the years, I’ve interacted with listeners from all walks of life, and it’s these interactions that have shaped the show and my own personal growth. I’ve learned the value of authenticity, resilience, and adaptability in this ever-changing landscape. Whether it was navigating technical difficulties, dealing with criticism, or juggling the demands of life and work, each hurdle has been a stepping stone to growth and a testament to the power of perseverance.

So, tune in as I delve into the heart of podcasting, sharing personal anecdotes, insights, and tips for those embarking on their own podcast journey. Remember, success in podcasting, as in life, doesn’t come overnight. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and the journey is just as important as the destination. It’s my hope that by sharing my experiences, I can inspire others to embrace the journey, the challenges, and the joy of podcasting. After all, it’s the lessons learned along the way that make the journey worth it.

Tickets Now on Sale for the TSP 15 Year Anniversary Celebration

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 1, 2023 by Jack SpirkoJune 1, 2023 5

Save the Date and Come Join Us – Thursday, July 20, 2023 – 5-9PM CST

It seems hard to believe at times but it has been 15 years since TSPC began as a podcast recorded in a car on my daily drive to my office.  In 2010 at just 18 months in, I took TSPC full time and have never looked back.

Officially the show will turn 15 on June 20th, we will be celebrating exactly 1 month past that though to give folks time to make arrangements and come if they want to.  At the 10 year it was an amazing time, but Dorothy and I felt there wasn’t enough food among some other issues.  So Dorothy being the amazing person she is set off to find a better venue.

Get Your Tickets Here

The location is going to be a place called Pin Stripes in the Clear Fork area of Ft. Worth.  Dorothy and I went there last week to scope the place out, try a few drinks and some food.  Bluntly, it was simply amazing.  The venue is perfect we will have the second floor to ourselves, our own dedicated bar staff, a bowling lounge area with 4 totally private lanes and an awesome outdoor terrace.

Food is going to be amazing.  The entire party will last 4 hours, 5-9 PM CST and food service will be a buffet that will last about 90 minutes.  The food is truly elevated and they just keep bringing it so if you end up hungry it will be your own fault.

Here is the full menu…

  • Char-Grilled Burgers
  • Spicy Grilled Chicken
  • Chicago-Style Baby Back Ribs
  • Baked Mac & Cheese
  • Garden Salad
  • Parmesan Potato Chips
  • House Made Cookies and Ghirardelli Tripple Chocolate Brownies
  • Regular and DeCaf Coffee
  • Hot and Iced Tea
  • Sodas

To be able to provide something this awesome we have to charge for it.  Our cost is about 80 dollars a person so that is what will will charge per ticket.  This includes all you want from the buffet, unlimited bowling (just grab a pair of shoes and a ball) and hanging out with some of the coolest people you will ever meet.  The bar will be a cash bar, but everything else is included in the ticket price.

Get Your Tickets Here

A note on the bowling lounge.  While I expect not everyone will use the lanes I rented them for those who will but as much for the space inside the lounge as well.  It is absolutely perfect to hang out and visit with others in and gives us a ton of total room so we can let 75 folks come.   That is the thing, it really is a hard cap limit so if you want tickets you need to order them now.

The area itself is great with some cool bars you can walk to in minutes from the location if for after parties and such.  Pin Stripes itself closes at 9 on Thursdays, so that is when they will ask us to leave.

But why Thursday Jack?

So, here is the deal.  I am only charging what I have to, to break even on things.  I want people to have a blast, eat amazing food and have awesome memories.  If I did this on a weekend the cost would be more like 125 – 150 a person.  Thursday is a pretty dead night for most bars and restaurants so it brings the cost down and let us negociate a better price.   My thoughts are people who take off work to come can just take off Friday too and have a very long awesome weekend.  One, that gets kicked off with a hell of a party and a hell of a great group of people to spend time with.

Etekcity 4 Pack of LED Lanterns – Item of the Day

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 1, 2023 by Modern SurvivalJune 1, 2023 18

Price Alert – One of the best selling of all time items from TspAZ is on sale today at 15% off and the regular price is always a great deal anyway.  These are a great go to for your black out kit, awesome extra lighting when camping and fishing and kids love them. I have sold literally thousands of these and as cheap as they are, still no complaints on quality.

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Etekcity’s 4 Pack of LED Lanterns.  These things are an incredible value and are the result of a lot of research.  These are an incredible value 4 units for $29.99 or about 7.50 a piece.  This is the upgraded version of these lights released about 2 years ago.  So what did the upgrade add?

Three things, first they now have a dimmer switch, with four different light levels, that can extend the insane battery life even more, or it is just nice when you want less light.  Also the bases on the new models now have magnets so they will stick to any metal surface.  On top of this the tops now have a storage space.  It isn’t a ton of space but plenty for a small bit of cordage, some tinder, extra keys, etc.

I have previously reviewed The Streamlight Siege Lantern.  And I still think it is the highest quality LED lantern on the market.

It is also 26-114 dollars based on the options you pick.  Even at the lowest priced option if you wanted one for every room of a 8 room house, you are looking at 200 bucks.  Frankly for this type of thing, it is over kill.  I wanted an affordable solution for every room lighting during an extended blackout.

I started looking around and dozens of companies are marketing these little pop up lanterns with minor differences.  The housings are almost identical.  Some are very inexpensive and some cost almost as much as The Siege, none are as good though.

Well I love Etekcity which has a lot of really cool stuff much of which I have reviewed in the past like their Thermal Gun, Power Failure Lights and Remote Control Electrical Outlets.  So I checked and back when I first found these the originals were $32.99 with free shipping.  They were also an Amazon best seller with over a 22,000 reviews and an average of 4.5 stars.

But I always check the one star reviews before picking an item.  Many times you can tell said reviews are written by idiots.  In this case, however; they bothered me.  Almost all of them said they got one that didn’t work out of the box and then never worked again.  So I began checking other options, heck it is almost like ever single brand of these things are clones.   They all have great reviews, a few bad reviews and all the different ones have almost the exact same complaint, dead on arrival or after one use.

So I contacted Etekcity who has great service and said basically that it is understandable at this price point and selling so many a few will have problems, but what is your return/replacement policy and this is what I got back in return, within an hour by the way!

Hello Jack,

Thank you for reaching out to us and thank you for all the feedback we appreciate it. Honestly we sell hundreds if not a thousand of these lanterns a day and we do have problems with them, they are not perfect.

Typically the main issue is a little toggle switch in the base that likely during shipping breaks unfortunately and once in awhile the top of the lantern is cracked or loose again probably due to shipping.

Once the lantern makes it to the customer and they arrive in good order we never hear from the customer because they seem to not fail with normal use.

We usually only hear from the customers the moment they open the package and find the damage and then we immediately send out a replacement and then all lanterns come with a 1 year warranty.

These are not the worlds greatest lantern but for around $7 each, they are one of amazons best sellers and we think for the price they are the best around.

thank you

Okay so every single one of those one star reviews are people that simply could have gotten a free replacement, on a $5-8.00 product?  Honestly this is why I have recommended so many things from Etekcity.

Talk about honesty in a nut shell they said, “hey look when you sell this many products of this type some will have problems, but we stand by and replace them”, what more could you ask for for about 6-8 bucks?

With that I was sold, I got two sets, we have them in our black out kits and if one fails, I don’t care I have 8!  That said all of mine have worked just fine and were in perfect shape when they got here.  But this was important to me, I wanted to be sure that if you did have a problem, Etekcity would fix it and I wanted to give you a lot cost option for back up lighting.  And hey even at this stupid cheap price, batteries are included!  Please consider that even cheap ass Rayovac Batteries are about 8 bucks for a 12-Pack.

And these do that, they will give you 12 full hours of light off three measly AA batteries.  So to me at the cost and for what they do this is the best deal in back up LED lighting for your house and your BOK (Black Out Kit).    So I really recommend you pick up at least one set of Etekcity’s 4 Pack of LED Lanterns.

Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TspAz.com

P.S. – I have noticed a few negative reviews complaining of leaking batteries ruining these lanterns.  Here is my rule for batteries, never store them in your devices for long periods of time.  I don’t care if the device is expensive or cheap, I don’t care of the batteries are generic or top brand, just don’t do it.

We keep flashlights (mostly D-Cell Maglites) around the house, we use them all the time.  Used devices never seem to have this problem.  When they start to weaken we replace them.

In our BOK we keep our devices and with them a ziplock bag with 4 sets of batteries per device in the bag.  We use our power failure lights and flashlights to retrieve our BOK and simply put the batteries in at that point and time.

Note that it is true that battery manufacturers are required by law to replace any device that leaking batteries destroy.  That doesn’t help in the middle of a black out though does it?  Simply put any device that is not used often, take the batteries out of it, store them with it and save yourself the headache.

Anker Soundcore Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker – Item of the Day

The Survival Podcast Posted on May 31, 2023 by Modern SurvivalMay 31, 2023 6

Note – I am brining this little amazing speaker around again today because it is awesome as heck and on a daily deal right now for 25% off while inventory lasts.

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day the Anker Soundcore 2 Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker.  This is the one has IPX7 Waterproof and wireless stereo paring with a second speaker.

The Soundcore 2 Is on sale today and gives you 12 watts of sound and an honest to God 24 hour play time on a single charge.  I personally own a pair of these and love them.  At 40 dollars each they are solid deal and pair of them produce awesome sound.  Yet at 30 bucks a piece in my view they are a steal.

I use these in my workshop since it is not wired with AV like my garage is.  So you are looking at 40 bucks for one or 80 bucks for a pair.  To me at that price a pair is the way to go.  And today they are on sale making a pair only 60 bucks.

Don’t over look that 2X paring!  Again for just 60 bucks you can get two and create a true stereo environment with any bluetooth device.  Think cheap surround sound with say a laptop playing movies.  Or any TV with bluetooth ability.  Or think one on each corner of a deck or patio.

Anyone will love this as a gift, and it is the kind of speaker you don’t freak out about taking to public places.  I own a 225 dollar Bose speaker, it is fricken awesome, but it is also over 200 fricken dollars and is not water proof.  I am not sitting it on a table at a camp ground!  Hell I don’t even trust myself not to forget it and leave it out in the rain when working on the back end of my property.

So how good are the dang things after all that?  In short, they are very good.  Now they are not shake windows loud but I’ll put it this way.  If you are hanging out in a group and chatting with music on, you won’t want it all the way up, it will be too loud.  But if you are listening by yourself and do turn it all the way up it can handle the power and still sounds great.  The over all sound quality is excellent and one even survived Dorothy driving our Subaru Outback over it.  I don’t advise doing that but it does say something that it survived the abuse doesn’t it?

The biggest complaint I have personally had with various bluetooth speakers and other bluetooth devices is syncing.  Some sync easily, some are buggy as crap.  Every Anker bluetooth device I have used works flawlessly.

My biggest skepticism when I first tested an earlier model of these in late 2018 was the stereo paring.  It also works flawlessly and every single time.  Once a set “know each other” you don’t even need to do anything but turn them on.  And yes they still will work solo, two is one and one is none anyone?

Every time I bring you Anker items I finish with this, but in a world of cheap electronic crap there is a reason.  I have sold literally 10s of thousands of Anker items over the years.  I have never had one complaint of a failed or damaged item that Anker did not make right.  It is why you guys keep hearing me recommend them.  So if you want to up your audio game in 2022, check out the Anker Soundcore 2 Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker while its on sale.

P.S. – I love Anker so much I have created this link, it always pulls up any and all Anker Products that are on special deals at any given time.  Do BE AWARE it also has sponsored non Anker products in it, because that is how Amazon rolls.  But it is worth checking this out from time to time.  Anker really is the best value electronics brand on the market.

Join Us for the 15 Year TSP Anniversary Party

The Survival Podcast Posted on May 30, 2023 by Jack SpirkoMay 30, 2023

The location is going to be a place called Pin Stripes in the Clear Fork area of Ft. Worth.  Dorothy and I went there Friday to scope the place out, try a few drinks and some food.  Bluntly, it was simply amazing.  The venue is perfect we will have the second floor to ourselves, our own dedicated bar staff, a bowling lounge area with 4 totally private lanes and an awesome outdoor terrace.

Food is going to be amazing, full menu in the PS and on the ticket page tomorrow, but it will include burgers, baby back ribs, spicy chicken, sides, non alcoholic drinks, deserts, etc.  The entire party will last 4 hours, 5-9 PM and food service will be a buffet that will last about 90 minutes.  The food is truly elevated and they just keep bringing it so if you end up hungry it will be your own fault.

A note on the bowling lounge.  While I expect not everyone will use the lanes I rented them for those who will but as much for the space inside the lounge as well.  It is absolutely perfect to hang out and visit with others in and gives us a ton of total room so we can let 75 folks come.   That is the thing, it really is a hard cap limit so if you want tickets you need to order them as soon as they go on sale.

When is that?  Thursday, June 1st at 8AM CST.  I don’t expect they will sell as quickly as the fall workshop does but you never know, so lock the date in and get your ticket early if you want to come.

Thursday is a pretty dead night for most bars and restaurants so it brings the cost down.   My thoughts are people who take off work to come can just take off Friday too and have a very long kick ass weekend that gets kicked off with a hell of a party and a hell of a great group of people to spend time with.

Full details on menu and other things and ticket sales again released on Thursday this week.
