Ryan and Amelia Soucy went from living in a city, where Ryan consistently worked 80 to 100 hours a week, to a completely off grid homestead in upstate NY. He worked as a fireman for a federal contractor while she was getting a degree in homeland security and emergency management.
They moved into a run down RV with 2 dogs and brought their chickens with them. They bought a shed and turned it into a one room cabin. Ryan works in town while Amelia tends to the homestead, raising dairy goats, meat rabbits, and chickens. Their plans include expanding to raising pigs and building a house.
Ryan and Amelia got married when he was 25 and she was 21 and the moved into the camper less than 2 weeks later (she in fact still is 21, it has not even been a year). They are firm believers that you are not too young to start building and that best time to start is now. They had plans to wait a few years and build before moving, but that plan quickly got thrown out.
Currently Ryan should be able to “retire” before 40 and have the homestead provide most of their needs.
