Nick Ferguson is a Permaculture Designer, Ecosystem Engineer, and international consultant with over a decade of professional experience designing resilient properties coast to coast in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Certified under Geoff Lawton at the Permaculture Research Institute Australia, Nick transforms land into self sufficient systems using function stacking, regenerative agriculture, and holistic design.
Nick is also a long time friend of mine and a go to expert for TSP listeners looking for help with plants, fodder systems, and homestead ecosystem design. Over the years he has worked with landowners around the world helping them design landscapes that produce food, build soil, support livestock, and become more resilient over time.
In this episode we focus on one of the most powerful design ideas in permaculture. Function stacking with plants. Nick explains how the right species can serve multiple roles at once, producing livestock feed, improving soil, supporting wildlife, and strengthening the overall homestead system. We also dig into practical uses for fodder trees like mulberry and willow, the long term value of planting acorn producing oaks, and how these species can help reduce feed costs while building a more productive landscape.
Nick runs Rare Plant Store (www.rareplantstore.com) where he offers curated packs of support species, fodder trees, and oaks designed for homesteads. He also offers consulting services at www.homegrownliberty.com.
