How Specialty Mushrooms Bought a 70 Acre Farm – Epi-3869

Kyle Beaver joins us today to discuss building food and income self sufficiency through specialty mushroom cultivation, then using documented farm income to gain access to USDA land programs most people have never heard of. This is not a story about buying a giant farm, borrowing a fortune and hoping it all works out. Kyle started with $300, limited land and no farming background.
We will dig into why specialty mushrooms made sense, how he found buyers and what it took to build a real business while still working a full time job. We will also discuss lion’s mane as both food and functional medicine, the value of selling wholesale spawn blocks and how other farmers can add mushrooms as an additional source of monthly income.
Kyle runs Ten Mile Mushrooms in Pennsylvania’s Coal Region. At 25 he went looking for the highest return crop he could produce on limited land and kept coming back to mushrooms. He took his first harvest to a local farmers market, found almost no competition and quickly had restaurants and local stores calling before he could produce enough to meet demand.
For two and a half years he kept his day job while selling at markets, contacting buyers and building the farm on the side. By year three the business was producing enough income for him to leave the job behind. Today Ten Mile Mushrooms supplies wholesale spawn blocks to growers across the Northeast, and Kyle coaches other farmers on using mushrooms to create an additional revenue stream.
After three years of documented farm income, Kyle became eligible for a USDA loan program that allowed him to purchase a 70 acre farm with zero down and interest only payments. It was still debt, but it gave him access to land and a life he and his partner Alex could not have built otherwise. Together they also operate rental properties and a community land stewardship nonprofit focused on practical skills, resilience and long term local independence.
