Today we are joined by Daniel Halsey to discuss what real collapse preparation looks like when you move past the fantasy version. This is not about knives, guns, bug out bags, or trapping rabbits. It is about the social side of long term disruption, the bad assumptions people carry into community living, and what actually has to be designed before people can thrive through hard times instead of just surviving the first wave of them.
Daniel has spent about 20 years as a permaculture and ecological designer, working across the United States and internationally. His work has put him in direct contact with homesteaders, preppers, landowners, and communities trying to build systems that can function with less dependence on fragile infrastructure. He is also the founder of United Designers, a cooperative network of ecological designers, and runs the Natural Capital Plant Database, which serves thousands of users around the world by helping them select plants suited to their climate, soil, and intended human use.
Lately Daniel has been working with Mike Haigwood in Colorado on the Observer Ranch community. That work has fed into a new 100 plus page field manual focused on what he calls the phases of collapse, moving from the initial shock and instability into longer term drawdown and adaptation. His focus is on the stuff most people avoid talking about, social friction, unrealistic expectations, bad group dynamics, poor planning, and the hard truth that community sounds great until people actually have to live, work, and make decisions together under stress.
We will also dig into Daniel’s own path into ecological and homestead design, how the prepper community shaped his thinking, and what years of travel in a Class A motorhome taught him about mobility, resilience, and what people really need versus what they think they need. We will cover the new book, the response from peer reviewers, his fiction work set in post collapse worlds, and how he is personally preparing for a future where resilience is not a slogan but a daily operating system.
