Let’s Talk About Liberty – Epi-3535

Call it liberty, call it freedom or call it autonomy or fankly anything you want, do you really know what it means. More does a society obsessed with using these words to sell ideas have any ideal what they even mean?
The more l listen to people both on the right and left the more I become convinced that the answer is a very clear no. They have no idea what liberty and freedom mean. Oh they get it into every speech, every discussion, every interview but they don’t remotely comprehend the concept.
Why? Because a thing that can only be defined by an individual can’t truly be defined by a collective.
See that is the thing, I can come up with a generic version of liberty, one you may even be inclined to agree with. Something like…
The ability to do anything you want so long as you don’t interfere with the rights or property of others.
Sounds great right up until you try to discuss what it means. What does the above mean when almost everyone in society feels they have “rights” that do interfere with the rights and property of others? In a word it means nothing and leads to people who constantly use the word freedom as they describe theft, oppression and centralized control over the masses.
Remember the right is largely who brought you the Patriot Act and the Freedom Act. The “Freedom Act” which took numerous rights from American citizens while expanding federal power passed the House 338 to 88 (196 republicans voted yes) and the Senate 67 to 32 (23 republicans voted yes). The numbers on The Patriot Act are even more damning. The patriot act passed The House at 357 to 66 with 196 yes votes from Republicans, The Senate 98-1 (with 48 yes votes from republicans).
See the reality is what freedom means today is my side is right in the minds of so many. My intention today is to get you to define what freedom means to you individually. Because that is the only way you will ever get close to achieving it for yourself and let go of the innate desire we all seem to have to tell others how to live.
