Hi Jared! Thank you for the kind words about our show! We love helping people reach their optimal health! Regarding the fish oil, we always recommend a high ratio of DHA/EPA’s because it helps raise your good cholesterol and lower your triglycerides. We use our Omega 3 EPA/DHA to do this with our clients. For 2 softgels, they contain 2500mg Marine Lipid Concentrate yielding 900mg EPA’s and 660mg DHA. We recommend taking 4 of these softgels per day for optimal results. Advocare is a good company. You just need to make sure that the source of where the fish oil comes from is of quality. Our products are all pharmaceutical grade which means ours are extremely high potency and quality.

awesome stuff.

I’ve found the same thing with ‘fat tapering’.. when I first went Paleo I was eating TONS of fat.. it was like I couldn’t get enough of it.. after six months or so my desire for it has fallen to a more ‘normal’ level. (Tbsp of grass fed butter instead of 1/2 a stick) 🙂

Fantastic. I loved this interview Jack. All of your info is great but sometimes you have a guest or topic that just screams to me. This one was a screamer. The good Doctors will be receiving 3 blood tests from this household.

Thanks a lot.

Question for Dr. Lewis: How often would you recommend having the panels repeated? Is it something that should be done annually, or more/less often?
Great show….thanks!

Most of the time, it takes a minimum of 3 months for supplements to make changes in the lab. Generally, after initial testing, we will retest everything that was initially tested to see the progress that has been made. Once everything is stable and seems to be headed in a positive direction, we will let them go for 6 months before retesting again. On some tests like thyroid or an underlying infection, we will retest a specific panel within 6 weeks to make sure everything is getting better.

How long should one wait after a “cheat” to have lab work done? I ask because I have been following a low carb/primal diet for the past four months but anticipate falling off the wagon Thanksgiving day and again Christmas day. Would one day of rolls, mashed potatoes and pie skew my A1C? Should I wait to be tested until I have been back on the wagon for three months?

Dr. Stephen Lewis

Reply to  SusanG

I love it! Everyone needs an occasional cheat day! You do not need to wait with your lab because the A1C is a 3 month average. So one or two days of cheating will not interfere with the results.

I just bought some interesting non-pharma pharmaceuticals from onedoc.com
Is there a special name for drugs or treatments that work better than FDA approved “for human consumption”? For instance, one of these drugs has been developed for the vet industry. It’s been on the market for years and proven its safety and effectiveness is better than any prescription drug. It would cost someone $2billion to get it tested and approved for human consumption but make them no money if they did since it is out of patent. The vet version is a pill made for dogs and cats and comes with an “attractive beef flavor”.

I am not currently aware of any. I can only recommend lab work and our nutrients.

question for Dr. Stephen Lewis. i was wondering if using your services would qualify under an hsa account i have through my job. it stipulates it is only usable for medical things. i would say this is medical was just wondering if you thought the gov would feel that way on the hsa

Dr. Stephen Lewis

We are able to use HSA accounts. Most are fine for using it for lab work. Sometimes they don’t want you to use it for your supplements. All of them are different. Most all will initially allow it. Every now and then some of our clients will get letters wanting documentation and diagnosis. Because we do not deal with insurance companies, we will not be able to provide you with a diagnosis should this occur.

does this hold true for FSA accounts? I know they are similar to HSA but I don’t use HSA and don’t know if they are treated differently for this use for some reason (hey, government made the rules on these things, so never unreasonable to check)

Another question for Dr. Lewis (got to jump on the bandwagon here). What would you recommend for women as a multivitamin or suppliment (etc) for folate and eventual prenatals? I know they recommend that women should take a multivitamin with folate a couple years out of getting pregnant and all, I have been starting to wonder if that is a bunch of BS or not.

Yes, that’s true. Read the book detoxify or die by Sherry Rogers. It’s best to clean up before pregnancy. Many people can’t convert folic acid so we use 5-mthf which is usable. Then call us or get lab if you feel led to.

I really liked what the Docter said, but looking at the site I see they sell synthetic supplements. I am sure they are better than synthetic supplements you would find at Wal-mart, but synthetic is not the same as supplements from whole food (grow it, dry it, turn into powder).
Also, my chiropractor orders the same panels plus a couple more for less than $143. I don’t know how rare that is but maybe it is.
Other than those two issues, I love everything they had to say. And I am also impressed they they do not charge for their consultation which is really rare. My wife has hashimoto’s and doctors want to charge thousands for phone consultations alone – and these are chiropractors and other professionals in the alternative medicine field and you have to pay out of pocket.

I heard on the podcast them mention hashimoto’s and wish they would have elaborated on it some more.
Great interview.

Some of our products are whole food, but some are isolated so they can be used to enhance physiological responses. What are the specific lab panels does your chiropractor run for 143.00? Maybe we need to collaborate! We generally stabilize hashimoto’s within a few months since it’s an auto-immune disease. Thank you for the comments! Let us know if we can help!

Question for Dr. I’ve had seizures for years that just started out of the blue. No medical doctors can tell my why just shove meds at me. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 5 years ago. After getting blood sugars under control I haven’t had a seizure in that time. Could there be a connection between high blood sugar and seizures?

Dr. Stephen Lewis
Reply to  ChrisJ

There are many things that could cause this. Are you seeing a neurologist? It could be blood sugar or so many other related things. Can you send me your lab work? If you don’t have any, I would be happy to suggest panels you might need.

Diabetics tend to be deficient in thiamine, vitamin B1, and this seems to be the source of much of diabetes complications (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18220605, http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1742-1241.2011.02680.x/full, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12882930, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21342411). Thiamine may be associated with seizures (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2044623).
Thiamin comes in the water soluble form over the counter, benfotiamine(fat soluble but semi-synthetic), and allithiamine(fat soluble and natural, can find on Amazon)
Also, diabetics tend to deficient in magnesium (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10218382). Low serum level can cause seizures (http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/2038394-clinical) A low serum level if treated can help your diabetes (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12663588), but blood levels can be deceiving(http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Magnesium-HealthProfessional/#en3), and a lack of magnesium may reduce the effectiveness of thiamine(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC494812/), at least in some conditions, so you probably should be on this also. The form that seems to have most evidence for helping magnesium arrive at the brain is magnesium threonate. Any form but magnesium oxide is probably going to raise your tissue levels.
Also, consider a ketogenic diet (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketogenic_diet#Efficacy).

One of the best interviews yet and spot on point after point after point. I do have a question though. You say all things in moderation but doesn’t the body take like a month or more to recover from eating something like grains or HFCS? Some people might think that a bowl of ice cream or a cupcake once a day (or even once a week) is fine and by all means, that is better than the majority of the population, but doesn’t that keep your body in non-optimal conditions at all times still so your body will continue to have issues? Seems like one would have to be insanely strict just to have optical health and almost never have a “cheat”. Thoughts?

Your body is very resilient. Janet gets better results than me because she is more strict and takes more. I throw in a lot of stuff and know God will sort it out. When I sin with my food I don’t do guilt but when I gain 3lb I get a little more strict. Thanks for your kind words!

I had an initial consultation with Dr. Lewis prior to having my blood and urine tests done. He was a delight to speak with. You can tell he really cares and that it’s not about the sale.

Today, I spoke with Dr. Lewis for over an hour going over my blood work and urine analysis. I was pleased with the results for the most part as I know we eat well and take good supplements. There were a few areas that surprised me as far as being areas of concern that I was unaware of. I feel great for the most part but Dr. Lewis explained it like this. “You can have cancer for 20 years and feel fine but you still have cancer”. An eye opener to be sure.

The supplements recommended are going to be pricey compared to what we’re spending now but my thought is that I’d rather invest some money now up front to prevent spending a lot of money down the road when some chronic condition rears its ugly head.

My wife has some specific health issues that we are looking to address with Dr. Lewis’ help. I hope to be singing his praises 6 months from now. I happen to know that he likes chocolate.

So far I am very impressed with Dr. Lewis’ level of expertise and his affable nature. He truly is a pleasure to speak with.

Farmer Dan,
Thank you for your kind comments, Janet and I have a lot of fun doing this. We have seen many miracles that leave us in awe of what the body can do and we are very humbled to be a part of the solution. I will bet you get great results because you take responsibility, trust, follow, and are willing to plant the seeds of health (pun intended).

Hi All – I sent in my health questionaire the day after the podcast aired. I am dealing with a few health issues and an alternate to corporate medicine was appealing. I started my supplements a little over two weeks ago and I am extremely pleased. I have a medical issue that causes constant low grade pain, my pain levels have greatly decreased. The supplements are expensive, but at 57 I felt I needed to get myself as healthy as possible. Dr. Lewis and Janet are easy to talk to, compassionate and extremely knowledgeable. I am committed to 3 months to see what the results are. So far so good. I will post back at the end of the 3 months. I would love to see Dr. Lewis and Janet back on the show
