Maggie Laverman is a prepping, homeschooling mother of four boys who lives in central Iowa. In 2017, she and her husband purchased an old junkyard for cash and have been fixing it up and making it their dream homestead and prepper haven ever since.

Besides doing most of the construction themselves, the family raises pastured hogs, geese, ducks, meat chickens, and laying hens on their lovingly named farm, Cluck Cluck Goose. Maggie and the boys have been incubating and hatching various species and breeds of poultry for local customers and have even enjoyed hand-raising and placing guard geese in the homes of friends and neighbors. Maggie enjoys teaching classes to all age groups on nutrition, homesteading, and preparedness.

In a recent TSP episode, I lamented a need for anyone who has successfully incubated geese to please contact me.  Maggie began an email, but soon realized it was much too long a topic to describe on paper. She has also been watching the chatter surrounding the latest “bird flu”, and with spring approaching, felt compelled to pass along her hard won knowledge about home-level poultry incubation because it may soon be needed.

During the interview, spends a little bit of time on incubation basics as an overview, but the main gap she fills in is

1) waterfowl incubation specifically, and
2) incubation/hatching troubleshooting.

Maggie has successfully incubated dozens of chicks, waterfowl ducklings and goslings, and even performed “c-sections” in which the babies come out strong and alive.  We end with some tips for success for the first few days of life outside the shell.  Join us for an hour of real world wisdom and building a skill set that can pay dividends for decades.
