Olitans T010 Folding Titanium Scalpel – Item of the Day
Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.
Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Oiltans T010 Folding Titanium Scalpel. This is one of the best little pieces of EDC kit I have found. Before I even get into it I want to let you know the entire Olitans Store is worth checking out as they have a lot of folding scalpels and a different form factor or blade type may be more in line with your preference.
I actually just found these folding scalpels as a thing a few weeks ago when I saw one in a short video. I instantly did a deep dive and soon found Olitans was the best manufacture of this style of tool. I then went over more than a dozen of their offerings and chose the T010 as my preferred tool. They make some that are a little less expensive, some that are more expensive and in many form factors. I will explain why below but as I said you may wish to browse some of the other options from Olitans.
My favorite additional option from Olitans is the T058 Folding Scalpel Knife.
`
It has a pocket clip and uses #60 Blades which are more like a typical small pocket knife in length but is still very small to carry.
So why this model for me? First like many of the options from Olitans it is titanium. That means no rust, no bending and even a normal fire can’t damage it. It also means super light weight with amazing strength. Next up is the size. I wanted something that could go on my key ring and not be much more than just another key as to bulk. While not as small as say a door key it is smaller than my truck or car key remotes.
Next I wanted easy one hand opening and the T010 definitely does that well. A simple flick and out it comes. No assist just how it is mechanically designed. It also has a good side lock that is more than strong enough for what you’d do with a tool of this size. I was also concerned it could open by accident in a pocket, but the way the T010 is designed makes that very unlikely.
Next was the blade form. The T010 uses #24 surgical blades. These are a perfect size and form for EDC use in a tool like this. They are also very inexpensive, you can get 100 of them for 9.99 which is only about a dime a blade. And again the form factor is great for this type of tool as an EDC item. Good for anything from opening boxes to skinning small animals.
Now why a folding scalpel in general? Well first they really get you into something you can EDC anywhere, any time. Smaller then a typical pen as to how they carry anyway. I don’t know any place where the blade length of one of these is illegal. Of course though there are some places you still can’t take them. Like say some security check points, otherwise though you should be good.
Next is sharpness. One way to be sure your knife is “as sharp as a scalpel” is for it to simply be a scalpel. And with easy to swap blades at a dime each it can always be that way. I will say you need to use caution inserting and removing the blades and it does take a bit of effort to get the hang of it. Once you do though it is very easy. If you happen to keep cut resistant gloves around though it would not be over kill to use them.
I also have advice for spent blades. Even when you are ready to swap them it is likely parts of the edge are still very sharp. So they present a risk to family, pets and garbage men. When I got my first replaceable blade knife (The Outdoor Edge) I initially just taped up blades in some duct tape, that worked fine. But a listener suggested this tip. Save an old pill bottle and put all spent blades in it. When full just throw it in the trash and it is safe for everyone and given pill bottle have tamper resistant lids it is an extra layer of security if you have small kids in your home.
In any event since getting this little tool I love it. Like I said I wanted one on my key ring and I did that with my first one. To do so I ordered a pack of these small titanium rings, they work great for the purpose and have many other uses, they are also really inexpensive. Since they are also titanium even though they are small they won’t pull open on you. The tool itself is so small that attaching it to a regular split ring makes it cumbersome to use, so use something like these rings. It does come with a small snap chain for this purpose but I do not trust those things and neither should you.
I have had it a few weeks now and I love it so much that I am buying a second one to keep in my small EDC pouch kit (you can see that in the video below). I really can’t give a higher endorsement then buying something and then buying it again. I think if you give the Olitans T010 Folding Titanium Scalpel a shot, you will love it too.
But again check out the full Olitans Line Up, I am very impressed over all with them. Oh and if you want the Cadillac of the Folding Scalpel line check out the T022 Titanium Folding Scalpel. It is a bit more than I am looking for but many of you may find it to be perfect. I may in fact pick up one down the road and give it a full review too.
