Creating Healthier Soils with Biochar – Epi-3284
Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 2:00:29 — 34.5MB)
Mark and Laurie Mann are on a mission to heal our soil. Together they have devoted decades to the holistic enrichment of soil to produce impressive results in the root systems of trees and plants. Their complimentary education and practical knowledge has led them to create two companies; Plant Growth Management Systems and the American BioChar Company, over the last 25 years.
Mark’s enthusiasm for trees and agriculture started with his studies at Purdue University, where he earned a degree in Forest Management and Agronomy. He continued his work in urban tree soil improvements, arborist equipment, and Tree Growth Regulators. He has trained thousands of plant specialists over the years in topics such as proper pruning techniques, tree physiology, and biochar basics.
Laurie studied Chemistry and Biology at Indiana University and taught these subjects for over a decade. Her passion for plants and soil biology, spurred her to create the TGR Slide chart, design presentations that highlight plant health and soil-plant connections, and write a blog on natural associations.
During their work with urban trees, they found the tree’s survivability was directly linked to its soils. Their focus had shifted to the soil and an appreciation for the connections between plant roots and the soil. Mark and Laurie began looking at ways to improve soils which led them to using biochar. Incorporating biochar is a key to fixing so many of our most pressing environmental concerns. If we can fix the soil, we could solve more than just the problem of plant and tree growth. We could create cleaner water, save the bees, stop chronic illness, grow healthier food, and help urban forests thrive.
Their passion turned to purpose leading them to create VITAL Blend soil amendment, which promotes the soil’s biology by adding active and fixed carbon to the soil. Their holistic product is serving farmers and growing communities today but also is creating rich, living soil for future generations.
Their motto is “the beauty above comes from the science below.”
They join us today to discuss the concept of “from the ground up, creating healthier soils with biochar.

Great show. I’m trying to figure out what was said regarding aeration of compost tea. I was planning to take a drum and make 20-30 gallons of compost tea, then mix with raw biochar. Is aeration better than no aeration for charging the biochar? And how long does the biochar need to be in the liquid to charge it?
Hello Lee.
Aeration is important for compost tea, however you could still charge the biochar without the aeration. More than likely you’re looking at less than a half an hour for the biochar to charge it (but longer the better).
Thank you!
