Getting the Gardening Edge in 2024 – Epi-3467
Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 1:32:29 — 26.5MB)
This weekend I put in over 200 transplants and at least half were not “productive” meaning they produce nothing edible. Yet every plant got a special mix including inoculation of the roots with mycorrhizal fungi. And the last 4 years of soil management were visible in a big way.
Today I will tell you so many things I have realized in the past 4 years so you too can grow tons of your own food even in a small backyard garden.
Join Me Today to Discuss…
- What several years of good soil management look like during spring planting
- The impact of biochar is just beginning
- The way I am now doing transplants
- I make a mix of compost, Dr. Earth, kelp meal and biochar
- Every transplant gets that mix in the hole
- Every transplant gets a dusting of mycorrhizal fungi including support species
- What I did to terminate the winter cover and get ready to plant
- Cover was knocked down with a crimping board and hoeing
- It was that weed flamed
- Then mulched over with aged wood chips
- What was evident when planting
- I found worms with almost every hole I dug
- The amount of left over organic matter was amazing
- Macro arthropods were very active (spring tails, pill bugs, etc)
- Digging was so easy it was easier to do with a hand then a trowel
- All tomato plants went in the same way but with three aspirin tablets
- My PVC drip system was awesome for watering in to avoid excessive stress
- This weekend was ideal due to a lot of cloud cover
- The Vevor Garden Bench was absolutely better then I imagined
- Flowers that went in as support and cover species included
- Zinnia
- Cosmos
- Marigold
- Sweet Alysem
- Safflower
- Still to plant
- Serpent gourds
- Asian cukes
- Giant Okra
- Plans for the back gardens that need a lot more improvement
- Summer cover will include rows and strategic plantings of
- Buckwheat
- Cowpea
- Sunflower
- Sun hemp
- Sudan grass
- More flowers
- Summer cover will include rows and strategic plantings of
- What is the big difference this year, it is an accumulation of
- Cover crops
- Bioreactor compost
- Aged mulching
- My PVC irrigation system
- Biologics like Dr. Earth and mycorrhizal fungi
- Final thoughts – Treat a garden like it will be handed down to your grand children one day

What size aspirin are you using? 325mg, 81mg?
Regular aspirin so I guess 325
Jack, recently you mentioned a PVC-based watering system for the garden, because you have hard water. My water is super hard as well, and drip irrigation systems clog up with calcium. Which is the podcast where you talked about that?
This video shows how it works https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_43q6PLlmJs
