In this episode I was joined by Steve Kasarda who had started, built, owned and sold 3 nurseries. Now he grows for market (show theme) and manufactures greenhouses. He joined us to discuss “growing for market” without spending thousands of dollars.
In this episode Steve and I went into a wide range of topics centered around greenhouse growing and turning gardening into a profitable venture. We discussed the fundamentals of greenhouse and poly tunnel use, from managing soils and plant starts to maintaining ideal grow temperatures and using supplemental heat when necessary.
We also explored the steps to getting started at a market—how to price your products, organize your displays, and create a compelling mix of offerings. A big focus was on customer experience: how to treat people in a way that keeps them coming back.
We talked about how long it really takes to become an established market grower and shared tips on sourcing plant starts cheaply or even for free. We also covered how to carve out unique niches while still moving the more common items, how to organize your displays for easy transport without damaging your products, and ultimately how to make your garden not just productive, but profitable.
