In this episode I was joined by Jeff Wheatley who had over 15 years experience selling, installing, and servicing Hearth appliances (Stoves, Inserts, & Fireplaces) in 3 major fuel types: Woodburning, LP & NG Burning, and Pellet Burning.

He joined us to discuss the safe install & use of wood stoves.  He also provides us with tips on how to get the best efficiency, the most heat, the least creosote, the easiest maintenance, and the safest operation from your wood stove.

In this episode Jeff and I discussed several key aspects of woodstove installation and use. We kicked things off by looking at why the chimney is often the most expensive part of a stove setup, sometimes costing more than the stove itself. From there, we broke down the biggest differences between modern stoves and older models, especially in terms of efficiency and emissions.

We also covered practical topics like single wall pipe penetrations—when they’re acceptable and when they’re not—and cleared up confusion about which end of the pipe should face up during installation. For those using woodstove inserts, we shared best practices to ensure both safety and performance. Finally, we explained why fully seasoning your fuel wood is so critical, and how skipping this step can lead to poor burns, creosote buildup, and wasted energy.
