Today on The Survival Podcast I take your questions on cooking duck, first jobs, planting fence lines, off grid living, pest control, wells, septic tanks, fishing and more.
Make sure if you submit content for a feedback show that you put something like “comment for jack”, “question for jack” or “article for jack” in the subject line to assure proper identification for my screening process.
Please understand I receive several hundred emails a day and can’t get them all on the air.
I also do put out a lot of information on Facebook from emails that I can’t fit on the program though so keep em coming.

Hey Jack,
In the ant issue, I haven’t done it in years, so l don’t know the current cost, but I had great success using instant grits that I could but by the box. No mess, no harm to anything that might come into contact, and in theory should be good for the ground.
To the veteran in WA, I normally hate a fireplace, as they’re not very efficient for heat, but in such a small place, it would put out plenty of heat, and provide a place to cook indoors with a grate, Dutch oven, kettle etc. There are says you can build one rather cheap with some quick Crete and fire brick, then flu it with some triple wall pipe. Just be damn sure to reinforce the weight from below.
Thanks Jack.
On getting a CDL
It is a simple, low barrier entry to good pay. I got mine about 6 years ago. Once you have at least a year of experience, it’s possible to get a good paying local job.
I bought a house less than 2 years after i got my cdl, though not for cash.
Go in with a plan. I left my first starter company exactly one year after i started and got a higher paying local gig. My goal after that was a hazmat job. On that now, hauling fuel, again, making more.
Not planning on doing this forever, but as jack said, it’s always a fallback option.
My sister-in-law’s husband has been doing truck driving for 8 or 9 years now. Their long term plans include transitioning away from it, but as a beginning-to-intermediate step in building wealth it has worked well for them. Especially given that he started out as an immigrant without a professional degree.
BTW, I think a better description for the smell of the Valerian root would be “A dirty gym sock that someone recently farted in”. But it DOES seem to work… the taste isn’t as bad as it smells (especially with the peppermint), but still I usually just let the tea cool then gulp it down 😉
Regarding “adult language”: it isn’t the words, Jack. It’s the imagery. Since in my life I don’t choose the same kinds of words you choose, those words still carry visuals for me. I don’t like to be forced by someone else’s word choices to think about manure or an anus or whatever. The English language is so rich. There are so many ways to express the same thing. It’s my opinion that it would be better to elevate people by word choice rather than making them mire in disgusting thoughts. But you are free to do as you wish. Just wanted to give you another perspective on the issue.
So you get different mental images from the words excrement, crap and shit. Sorry that sounds like a personal issue for me and I don’t think others need to adapt their behavior due to your personal preferences.
I will remind you that no one forces you to do anything including listening to this show. Policies and Disclaimers, Section Three, Sub Section Five
“We believe in freedom here, if you choose to listen to our show you do so as a free human being on planet earth and therefore we are not responsible for any “mental anguish”, “mental trauma”, “feeling of being offended” or any other emotional problems that you get from doing so.”
Just sayin. And if the English language is so rich, why water it down by removing words from it because someone somewhere at sometime called some word “bad”.
Forced by someone else’s word choices? Really, think about it.
