Please Note – the following write up on Doc Bones was written by Doc Bones himself. Not sure if he was daring me to run it with the show, but if so, don’t dare me to do shit, I likely will do it.
Joe Alton is an old so-and-so who thinks he knows what he’s talking about, even while drooling on his shoes in his rickety rocking chair. He somehow has held on to his medical license for decades despite extreme views on medicine, politics, religion, and the quality of various brands of light beer.
Occasionally, he puts pen to paper and has put together a 700 page syphilitic rant on survival medicine call the Survival Medicine Handbook: The Essential Guide for When Medical Help is Not on the Way, plus other book that somehow, have made him a NY Time and Amazon bestselling author.
Now, Joe Alton MD and his geriatric caregiver, Amy Alton, an advanced registered nurse practitioner, have written a book called “Alton’s Antibiotics and Infectious Disease: The Layman’s Guide to Available Antibiotics in Austere Settings”. The book is all about the infections that will cause deaths in true long-term disaster settings and the antibiotics that would prevent those deaths.

I haven’t listened yet, but the write-up had me thinking that Jack had been hitting the cinnamon vanilla mead a little hard when he wrote it… That’s what I get for skipping the “Please Note”. I’m really looking forward to this one now, but perhaps I should spill some Fish Flox in my mouth first as a prophylactic.
I enjoyed this episode, but I can’t help but wonder. Doc Bones, Nurse Amy, do you guys hate money? It sounds like you have some fantastic books, but at the end of the episode, Nurse Amy made a comment about not offering Kindle versions of the books because “PDFs are no good to you if you don’t have electricity.”
My reasons for wanting Kindle books are unique. Hard copy versions aren’t accessible to me because I’m blind. However, I know that a lot of folks in the community keep digital copies of all sorts of resources because it really isn’t that hard to store fuel, batteries, or the means to keep low-draw electronics going when you have no grid power. Yes, a hard copy is useful, but I’d wager that a lot of folks in this community would buy both if they were offered, and then my unique issue of accessibility gets addressed.
Just a thought…
Bones is an old guy, (being serious now) and doesn’t get it, he is afraid if they make an ebook it will be pirated, doesn’t get it will happen anyway. So yea in some ways he hates money but like most he doesn’t know that he does.
I hadn’t considered the pirating angle, but I did wonder if it had something to do with fear of tech. Oh well… Guess I’ll make do with that really old resource from Rawles’ blog. 🙂
Hi Sarah,
Thanks for bringing up the subject. As a father whose youngest son is mostly blind as a result of brittle diabetes, I empathize with your situation. For that reason, I am exploring the possibility of converting some of our books into audio form in the coming year. If you have suggestions as to how to best accomplish this, let me know.
Oh, and money? Dirty, filthy stuff! Ugh! Revolting! (this is how you know I really am senile)
Joe Alton MD
you’re right Jack; it will get pirated anyway. I personally won’t download a pirated book (especially from someone who’s done so much for the community). But I really don’t want buy a stand alone book either. If I’m bugging out, my iPad with solar charger will weigh less than one book. And I can carry a whole lot of info with 128 gigs of space. A possible option? If one buys the hard copy they can get a .pdf as well. I’d even pay more for that option. This book sounds wonderful, but I’m going to need it in a crisis, and I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to carry it with me. But my iPad/iPhone will be with me, guaranteed! Please reconsider. Thanks!!
