Dry Cabin Living in Alaska with Bonnie Cao – Epi-3147
Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 1:33:48 — 21.5MB)
Today we are joined by Bonnie made her life shifting move to to just south of Fairbanks, AK in March of 2020. She lives there on her homestead and is building a dry cabin. She joins us today to discuss leaving her “high paying job” in Oregon, what dry cabin living is all about and why last year will be her absolute last Alaskan winter in an RV.
Bonnie was born and raised in Portland Oregon. She spent 14 years driving public transit before burning out on the Portland weird. In 2019 a friend convinced Bonnie to visit her near Fairbanks Alaska. Bonnie spent a week at her friend’s cabin in late January so she could see if she could handle the long, dark nights and the outhouse at -20°.
The answer was yes! Bonnie bought a property south of Fairbanks and made plans to leave her high paying job and move to Alaska. She turned in her employee ID at the end of March 2020 and made the move in June even though the tour bus job she had lined up fell through due to the pandemic. Nothing has gone quite according to plan and Bonnie has spent two winters in an RV instead of the cabin she wanted to build.
She swears there will not be a third winter in the RV!
These days Bonnie drives a shuttle van for a tourist destination and talks to guests about the adventure of living in rural Alaska. The concept of a dry cabin is something that most have never heard of. Many guests take the basics of life for granted and remark that hearing about this lifestyle makes them appreciate their own more. It also opens the door to conversations about how to be prepared for when things go wrong.

I took a lot of instruction from this interview. My climate isn’t nearly as cold (north Idaho) but it is applicable. Building a generator shed/enclosure right now b/c of this interview.
