In 2022, the news headlines are filled more than ever with warnings for the future of those who value freedom. We must go beyond recognition of the significance of exposing personal / private information to companies like google, facebook, coinbase, and amazon. We’re entrusting important information to companies that do not have the incentives in place to protect it or may even have incentives to further compromise that data. And yet, we often do utilize their services – they are easy to use and appear cost effective.
Many listeners of the Survival Podcast have started using the Start9 Embassy to take that power (their data) back from big tech. You do not need to be tech savvy to run a personal server anymore. If you already own an Embassy, Start9 has big news – we’ve launched the latest iteration of our product: 0.3.0. Join us for a review of 0.3.0 – all the functionality currently available on Embassy in one place and a continuation of the discussion around what makes us Start9: the individuals, the values, the goals.

And yes, being a supporter of this podcast saved me a lot of money on the device! If only I can get the “.local” domain working for the apps. Still trouble shooting it when I have time.

Matt, can you comment on why Start9 chose to stay with the RasPi platform? I am a big fan of the RasPi and have owned them back to the initial release. However, once you add a case and SATA drive you are getting close to the price of a X86 PC. Granted the RasPi offering is in a small package.
It is important that it is possible and easy for people to build their own Embassies using commodity hardware. The Ras Pi is a great fit for that. It was also an expedient way for us to go to market quickly. We will absolutely be supporting alternative SBCs as well as X86 this year.
