Chris Coulter on the Importance of Family Farms – Epi-3059
Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 1:15:00 — 17.2MB)
Today I am joined by Chris Coulter to discuss full time market gardening, the importance of small family farms and his new book, “The Complete Guide to Survival Gardening”.
After growing up on the family farm in Kentucky, Chris obtained a degree in Wildlife Biology and enjoyed a lot of outdoor working/living/camping before becoming more interested in the edible side of science. He returned to school to obtain a Master’s Degree in Plant and Soil Science and took his first international trip to Africa, coming back inspired to help people have access to good food and to learn how to grow it.
He met his wife Amy when they both worked as science educators and they married in 2002 and soon after started selling vegetables they raised on the family farm. They then moved to far western China where they worked with fruit production in the desert for two years (living with the Uyghur people) before returning to the farm. They then planted an orchard, managed a commercial nursery, and began their first CSA. Soon after Amy gave birth to their third child, they moved to Malaysia where Chris did PhD research in sustainable agriculture in the tropics for two years.
They then returned to their Kentucky farm in 2014 where they have been ever since, continuing to grow as full time farmers using what they have learned in their international experience to build a sustainable agroecosystem on their 30 diversified acres.
Chris wrote “A Complete Guide to Survival Gardening” in 2015 and loves to teach about sustainable agriculture and self-sufficiency. He is still involved in international agriculture development, permaculture, and the sustainable food movement. Chris enjoys wilderness backpacking with the family and hunting/shooting in his small amount of free time.

Haven’t gotten an episode on Spotify since number 3056. Anybody else having this problem?
I use BeyondPod on Android and 3056 is the last episode I’ve received as well.
Likewise. The link I have set in BeyondPod to pull down from is: http://feeds.feedburner.com/survivalpcast . It’s been that same link for years now, I don’t know that I’ve ever had to change it. It’s not getting any updates since Epiaode 3056.

Excellent content Jack & Chris.
