Natalie Bogwalker is the Founder and Director of the Wild Abundance, a school that offers classes in permaculture, hide tanning, primitive skills, natural building, and more based in Weaverville, NC. She’s passionate about teaching and sharing tools and skills that are essential for living harmoniously within the natural systems of the earth.
She lives in her lovely, growing homestead nestled deep in community in the Southern Appalachians. She spends her time harvesting in the wild, building, gardening, planting, putting up food, growing, teaching and scheming about how to introduce more people to Earth-based living, all while worshiping the beauty around her.
She teaches at the Chestnut School of Herbal Medicine, the Maps meet and Earthskills Rendezvous, and has given talks at FSU, Southern Adventist University, Tulane University, Ohio University, Vanderbilt University, Western Washington University, and many other places. Natalie was also featured in Morgan Spurlock’s documentary Freedom in America and appeared in the National Geographic series: Live Free or Die, in an episode titled “Butchers and Builders.” Natalie holds a B.A. in ecological agriculture and, more importantly, has studied with teachers who have deeply enriched her perspective, including Juliet Blankespoor, Margaret Mathewson and Frank Cook.
Natalie’s company, Wild Abundance will be launching an Online Hide Tanning class this November. We’ve decided to offer this for folks who can’t make it to our in-person class.
Natalie has over 15 years of experience tanning hides and is an master leather crafter. She’s taught hundreds of people how to tan hides using the wet scrape brain tan method. She joins us to talk about her experience living primitively at the Wild Roots community, her introduction to Earthskills, and how hide tanning has influenced her life.

Great interview and I will definitely check out her website as well as the course. I’m wondering if brain-tanning could be used on rabbits. When in Australia, I raised meat rabbits and had one failed attempt at tanning. I want to try it again once I’m able to get back into raising rabbits now that I’m back in the US, but would prefer to find a better method. On the surface, I love the sound of this method and would like to give it a try.
You can brain tan just about any hide.
