Today, Jennie D. (AKA Blue Lotus) joins us to delve into the world of guerrilla gardening and its role in enhancing community spaces. Jennie and her group are champions of the belief that “plants don’t need permission and neither do you,” a credo that fuels their mission. Tune in to discover the intriguing intersection of proactive anarchism and permaculture through their stories.
Jennie D. is a dynamic figure, blending her talents as an artist, activist, and avid gardener into impactful community initiatives. She manages a front yard community garden that doubles as a trade stand, fostering a local exchange of organic produce by day. By night, she transforms into Blue Lotus, leading her guerrilla garden crew, The Vegilantes, on covert missions to cultivate urban oases. Their ethos is simple yet profound: healthy produce should be accessible to all, and they infuse this mission with a dose of humor to nourish both body and spirit. Spirko,
Glad I listened to this. It’s an inspiring story. My one criticism would be that it presents an idea and briefly mentions the knowledge gaps, but doesn’t actually go deep enough into the weeds to help people who don’t know anything beyond “guerrilla gardening exists”. So, perhaps there’s a follow up show or two that could, say, list ten perennial food/herb plants (invasive or borderline) to get started. Things like Nanking Cherry, Hazelnut, Seaberry, Goji, rosemary, lovage, sweet potato, etc.
