Everyone wants land. Land land and more land. I need 80 jillion acres, cattle and pigs. Do you though? An intensively managed small holding is more than most people really need. Today we will discuss how you can meet a ton of your needs for food, fiber and medicine on even a .25-.75 acre lot. We will also learn a lot about strategy and context and how those lead to proper implementation of tactics and techniques.
Join Me Today to Discuss…
- First we must develop context
- Strategy begets tactics and techniques
- Interviewing yourself like you are your own client
- Do you eat meat
- Do you want to care for animals that must be killed to utilize them
- What fruits and vegetables do you eat
- Do you eat eggs
- Do you eat fish
- How much time do you have
- Do you travel, if so think deeply about animals before you act
- Etc.
- Some advantages of small property
- Easy to irrigate
- Easy to manage (things do not get away from you)
- Easy to shade some spots (may not be easy to open up others though)
- Many micro climates
- Lots of resources are close to you (people, things, waste streams, etc.)
- Honestly even on a big property this is just zone 1&2 permaculture design (everyone should do it)
- Gardening is for everyone but what are you going to garden see your answers to your questions
- Fodder trees may be a better play that fruit for total ROI
- Making “hay” and the concept of rabbit gardens
- Worm farms and BSL composting (Starbucks, work break rooms and Juice Bars will feed them for free)
- Other forms of composting and where they fit into this
- Thoughts on aquaculture and growing aquatic plants for fertility and feed or for humans
- Quail are an amazing meat and egg source, processing is stupid simple
- Chickens are the easy button but can have some issues in the burbs
- Rabbits are likely the most sustainable/regenerative meat animal for small holdings
- Thoughts on fishing, foraging and hunting
- Herbs are a hidden hero too
- Don’t be afraid to make some money along the way
