DeWalt 20V MAX Cordless Pruner – Item of the Day
Special Notice – Since I first published this the full kit is out of stock on Amazon pushing the price from 3rd party vendors to over 180. But they now have the bare tool option in stock for 89 bucks. At that price direct from Amazon, GET THAT OPTION, you can buy almost 4 little 2AH batteries for that spread.
Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.
Today’s Item of the day is the DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Pruner. This thing flat-out rocks. I bought one, and it was so useful I picked up a second one just to have when I’m working with friends, my wife, or my grandson on the homestead. If you’ve ever struggled with manual pruning shears—especially if you’ve got small hands, arthritis, or just a long day’s worth of work ahead—this tool is going to be a game changer.
It’s powerful, compact, and simple to use. Squeeze the trigger, and it makes clean cuts through branches up to 1-1/4 inches thick. But here’s the cool part—it also cuts new PVC pipe like butter. That’s not some hacky workaround; it just plain works, and it’s handy when you’re running irrigation or doing a quick plumbing install. Just don’t try to cut old, brittle pipe or anything stupid like metal and you’ll be good to go.
Battery life? DeWalt claims big numbers, but here’s the reality—if you’re using the 2AH battery that comes with it, expect about 30 minutes of constant cutting. Swap in a 5AH battery, and you’ll probably be done working before the battery’s even close to out of juice. And because it only draws power when you actually cut, it’s really efficient.
If you’re already on the DeWalt 20V MAX platform, it’s a no-brainer. I know many of you have drills, saws, angle grinders, etc. from DeWalt already. This pruner slots right into that system with no extra batteries or chargers needed. If you’re not on DeWalt yet, this tool is a pretty sweet excuse to get started.
It also has a built-in trigger lock for safety, and it comes with a blade cover you should be using when it’s not in use. This tool is safe when handled responsibly, but don’t get careless—it’s powerful enough to take off a finger. Use common sense and don’t hand it off to anyone too young or who doesn’t understand what it can do.
The blade is also both sharpenable and replaceable, which is a big deal. I’ve used one for two years, sharpened it twice, and I do a lot of cutting, especially when making biochar. Most homeowners won’t even have to think about sharpening for a year or more. It will easily handle anything that fits inside it if the wood is green. I have gotten it to cut stuff you can barely get it around with a few pulls of the trigger too. Where it gets limited is on dead hard wood like live oak that stuff is like rock once it seasons. So it is a wonderful tool but has limits like anything.
There’s a short video at the end of this write-up where I demo the tool, show it in action on various materials, and walk you through how it works. Honestly, if you’re familiar with power tools, you won’t even need the video—but it’s there if you want a closer look.
So check out the DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Pruner today with a retail of only 159 and that is with a charger and an extra battery. It is also available from third party sellers as a bare tool only and can be as low as 90 bucks that way but shipping costs and times will vary with 3rd party sellers. You can check this page then click see buying options. Since I have about a half a dozen chargers and many batteries, that is what I did. But your milage may vary.
