Today we are going to look at the relationship between Bitcoin and two concepts we discuss often on the podcast; preparedness and permaculture. We’re going to dive deep into how these three elements intertwine and why it’s crucial to grasp their connection.

Let’s start with Bitcoin in the context of preparedness. Bitcoin, as a decentralized digital currency, operates independently of any central authority. This unique characteristic makes it a reliable store of value and a means of exchange, especially during times of crisis or economic instability. We’ll explore how Bitcoin can be a strategic tool for financial preparedness, offering a buffer against the impacts of economic downturns.

Next, we’re moving on to permaculture. This is all about designing sustainable and resilient communities. It’s a holistic approach to providing all human needs while working with nature, not against it. By weaving permaculture principles into our lives, we can build self-sufficient, resilient communities that are ready to take on the challenges of the future.

Finally, we’re going to tie these two concepts together. We’ll look at how Bitcoin can support permaculture initiatives and how permaculture can provide a framework for building sustainable and resilient Bitcoin communities.

So buckle up, because we’re about to dive into the deep end of Bitcoin, preparedness, and permaculture. By exploring these concepts together, we can gain valuable insights into how we can build a more sustainable and resilient future for ourselves and our communities.

1.5 Quart Courant Mini Slow Cooker

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 6, 2023 by Modern SurvivalJune 6, 2023 2

Pricing Alert – This is the best small slow cooker on the market and today it is on sale for 33% off.  Make sure to read this write up as well because I give a way a ton of cool ways to use left overs with it even if you already have a croc pot you love.

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Item of the day is the 1.5 Quart Courant Mini Slow Cooker.  I started looking for a good small slow cooker a while ago to solve a few issues.

The biggest one being in staying keto the number one thing I have found that helps is having food ready in advance, especially for lunch.  Dinner is a pretty solid thing, you take out a steak or what have you and when dinner comes around you cook it.  Everyone has had the experience though with lunch, you kind of forget about it, next thing you know it is 2 or 3 in the after noon and you are ready to eat a doorknob if you don’t find some actual food soon.  This is when we slip and eat something we shouldn’t because it is easy and quick.

Well with a slow cooker you can take the left overs from the night before (sometimes the last two nights even) and always come up with something with it.  Some ideas will come at the end.  But pretty much if I have some sausage left over, a half a steak, a few meat balls, a couple pieces of chicken, you name it.  In about 10 minutes I can come up with some stuff, toss it in a slow cooker and the results are going to be damn good.

The problem comes in with full sized croc pots here in that we are talking 1-2 servings, not a giant family meal.  And who the hell wants to have to clean a giant croc pot if you don’t have to?  Not me!  Also when you put a small amount in a big croc you end up over cooking and it is also a cooked on the sides mess.

Next up most well almost all the small slow cookers have one setting “on” or if you are lucky “low” and “high”.  Inevitably these are too hot or not hot enough.  The 1.5 Quart Courant however has three like a full sized pot and they work.  The warm is really a “warm setting” as it it will not simmer and if you drop it down to there it will keep say queso warm without scorching the hell out of it to the sides.  The high setting will get you to an aggressive simmer, but not stupid hot with a full rolling boil.  Low if about half full or more will end up eventually in a perfect bare simmer.  That is a couple of small bubbles breaking through the surface every 2 to 3seconds in different spots.

The small footprint is awesome as well.  It is really nice that if you want you can just toss the croc into the dishwasher.  Though clean up is so easy I rarely do.  The real advantage is it fits in the refrigerator without moving shelves around.  The reason this is so nice is most of the time I make up my lunch for the next day right after dinner.  I toss everything in, then chuck it in the fridge.  I get up in the morning, make my coffee and just set the croc in the cooker and turn it on, usually high.  By lunch everything is done and perfect.  I usually drop it to low a about 1-2 hours in, then set it to warm about 30 minutes before I am ready to eat.

Because it is so small I just leave it next to my electric kettle on our coffee bar.  This thing has gotten so much more use then our full size cookers, because frankly it is just so much more practical.

Here are some ideas with using it, not really recipes because that sort of goes counter to the way I use it.  You just sort of decide the direction you want to go based on what you have on hand.  Here are some things I have done lately.

I smoked a pork roast and when we got down to the last about 1/2 lb, I cut it up and tossed it in the croc.  I added a hand full of dehydrated jalapeños, a TBS of chili powder, a few cloves of garlic, some diced celery, a handful of dehydrated tomatoes and cumin, salt and pepper.  We had some pretty used up cilantro so I finely cut up the stalks into small pieces and tossed them in.  Just covered with some chicken bone stock.  It was really fantastic and close to smoked carnitas in how it came out.

One day I had two Italian sausages from grilling for company left over.  So I sliced them in pieces and tossed them in, at that point I was not even sure what would go next.  I checked the fridge and found a half pack of shiitake mushrooms.  Oh, okay, cut up and in they go.  Added some herbs I think it was along the lines of fennel seed, oregano, thyme, rosemary and a good pinch of red pepper flakes.  Again covered with some stock, this time a bit more like a soup.  Tossed in a couple TBS of pine nuts.   When it was ready I simply went out to the garden and picked a big fistful of arugula and about half a dozen fresh basil leaves.  Stirred those in for a few moments and it was flipping amazing.

Last night I looked in the fridge and saw about a third of a ring of andouille sausage.  H’mm something something gumbo but no roux and all that flour on keto and I have no okra on hand right now.  Look in freezer, yea we have plenty of frozen shrimp but don’t want those over cooked.  Plan formed!  Shrimp were cut up and lightly coated with Chef Paul’s Redfish Magic Seasoning to firm up for the next day.  They go on a plate and into the fridge.  Into the produce bin ah, oyster mushrooms, cut em up into the croc.  What?  Mushrooms don’t go in gumbo, you’re not the boss of me.  Shrooms are my go to starch replacement in things like this.  Then cut up sausage, dice in a rib of celery, a third of an onion, an Anihem pepper, two cloves of garlic and a handful of dehydrated tomatoes.  A bit of Redfish Seasoning and some salt and pepper go in.  Cover with stock this time some fish stock made with better than bouillon fish base.  I don’t want those shrimp over cooked so I will put the pot on at coffee time then about an hour before lunch drop the temp to warm, stir in shrimp.  Let the residual heat do the rest.

To me this is the fun of the thing, what do you have and what can you do with what you have?  You end up with a meal for one or two, depending on your needs and then you simply give the dogs the tiny scrapings, 1-2 minutes of sink time and it is ready for the next go round.  I don’t do this every day but in general 3-4 times a week.  Anything that will over cook just add in at the time you want for the result you want.  Like the above sausage/shrimp pseudo gumbo adding the shrimp near the end.

I know people think of big meals with croc pots.  Likely this is why there are so few really good small ones.  But big ones are just not practical to make use of small amounts of left overs.  Like that half of a steak Dorothy always leaves behind but I don’t want it, cuz you know she likes her’s medium well.  Man that always makes a good quick stew, often sort of a hunters stew, left over steak from one night, and say a pork chop from another.  Add some celery, swiss chard ribs, and dehydrated tomato, finish off with fresh parsley from the garden.  Always shrooms if you got em, dehydrated shiitakes do great for this one.

Left over chicken and want something a bit more elevated then “chicken soup”, how about Jamaican Jerk Chicken Soup”?  Yea I just made it up, so what?  You should know by now how I am with cooking, just roll with it!  Toss cut up chicken into pot, add in a knob of fresh sliced ginger root, a tsp of Walkerswood Traditional Jamaican Jerk Seasoning.  Some dehydrated corn is nice here, yea not keto but just say a TBS or two of it for some sweet to balance the heat.  Dehydrated peppers too.  Add enough chicken stock or broth and turn it on.  If you eat rice add some cooked rice about an hour before lunch time, or you can use cauliflower rice to stay on the low carb train, it is all up to you.  Or just some fine chopped summer squash or squash noodles right near the end.  The rules are there are no rules!

As much cooking utility as this provides it also does something else wonderfully that a big crock just is not practical for at our scale, herbal salves.  Fill about half way with chopped herbs (last one was a comfrey one with a tiny bit of peppermint and lemon balm for a better smell).  Cover just barely with cheap olive oil (save the EVO for cooking).  Set on low and wait about 5 hours.  Drain off and thicken with bees wax (not in your croc), done.

Of course it will be great for those horrible cocktail wieners and such at parties if that is your bag too, but this one is so much more.  It is also damn efficient energy wise, my Kill-A-Watt meter says it pulls about 30 watts on warm, 80 on low and 120 on high.  Keep in mind that is from a cold start, so it is not a continuous draw.  Once it reaches temp it cycles on and off to maintain that temp.  All in it is about like running an old school light bulb.

Lastly you will notice a lot of use of dehydrated veggies in my ideas above and man this thing is great for that.  By lunch time they are perfect and lend a ton of flavor to the final dish.  This makes it easy to actually use all those wonderful dehydrated veggies on an ongoing basis.  So check out the 1.5 Quart Courant Mini Slow Cooker, I really think it belongs in every prepper and homesteader kitchen.

Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TspAz.com

P.S. – Yep this one is a bit more expensive then some similar ones and yep because it is a third party product you will wait a few more days for it to ship.  Honestly after a ton of research I decided that it was “the one” for me.  I always say, buy quality because junk ends up expensive.  If you want a cheaper version this one is decent, the Maxi-Matic Electric Slow Cooker at only 15 bucks.  From a variety of YouTubers though and reading the lower quality reviews on Amazon it seems to have some longevity issues.  People don’t seem as happy with the temps either.  As I always say, always be frugal, never be cheap.  The Courant is high quality and that shows the second you take it out of the box.

P.S.S. – If you ask me to nit pick the one criticism I can come up with is the cord is a bit short.  This is a non issue for me with where I keep mine in fact the short cord is great because it is long enough and not in the way.  Just remember though with kitchen devices like this, if it is an issue these little one foot extension cords are just slick as heck and they do a lot of other cool things too.

P.S.S.S. – Never did three s’s before!  You guys that work at an office.  Just leave the cooker at your desk or what have you and take the little croc back and forth.  When you get to work, drop it in and turn it on.  When your co-workers are eating junk food and spending good money on bad food, you will be chowing down on very high quality gourmet “left overs”.  This so beats the shit out of waiting in line to nuke something in Tupperware.

Our Portable Outdoor Shower Set Up – Item of the Day

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 5, 2023 by Jack SpirkoJune 5, 2023

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is our Portable Outdoor Shower Set Up consisting of two items, first the Gasland Tankless Portable Shower.  The second item is the Alavantor Shower Tent.  Pairing these two together along with a water source lets you have a hot shower just about anywhere.

So let me tell you about this great combo that’s been a game changer at our annual workshops for the past five years. I’m talking about a portable propane-powered tankless water heater and a spacious shower tent. These two have been a hit with our campers, providing them with some of the comforts of home while camping at Nine Mile Farm.

First up, the portable tankless shower system. This compact unit is easy to install and heats up water fast. We’re talking about going from a chilly well water temperature to a comfortable warm on demand shower.  This unit runs on a standard grill propane tank for the heating element, while D cell batteries power the sensor. It’s a simple, straightforward setup that doesn’t require any other power sources or modifications.

Now, let’s talk about the shower tent. It’s spacious, easy to set up, and provides all the privacy you need. It’s got a skylight to let in natural light, and it’s made from thick, durable material that can withstand the elements.  The shower tent also comes with a separate tarp for the bottom, so you can keep your feet clean and dry.

But here’s a pro tip: if you decide to get this tent, make sure to watch the video on the Amazon sales page that shows how to fold it back up. While it’s easy to do, it can be a bit tricky until you learn the exact order to get it folded back up.

But the best part? Both the water heater and the shower tent are portable. That means you can take them with you wherever you go, whether it’s camping, living off the grid, or hosting a workshop on your property.  So whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a prepper, or just someone who appreciates a good hot shower, this portable tankless water heater and shower tent combo is definitely worth the money. They’re solid pieces of equipment that are built to last, and I highly recommend them.

The uses here are endless.  Camping is obvious but what about when the power is out at home and your hot water heater is now just a tank full of cold water?  One of my good friends J.R. Haley, who always helps us with set up at workshops liked it so much he bought one and it is his primary shower at his barn conversion on his homestead.

Also the tent is useful even when it isn’t a shower stall.  How about a changing room at the beach, camping etc.  Also great as a porta-potty tent if you need one.  So give the Gasland Tankless Portable Shower and the Alavantor Shower Tent a shot and you absolutely won’t regret it.

Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TspAz.com

P.S. – I haven’t done a video of this set up but this guy on YouTube did a great job showing the shower system, how to set it up, how it works, etc. Check it out.

Lessons from 15 Years Behind the Mic – Epi-3312

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 1, 2023 by Jack SpirkoJune 1, 2023 2
https://survivalpodcast.net/audio/2023/06/epi-3312-15years-mic.mp3

Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 1:55:57 — 33.2MB)

I have been podcasting for 15 years and decided now was a good time to simply discuss what podcasting itself has taught me. It’s been a wild ride, a journey of self-discovery, growth, and endless lessons. When I first started, I was armed with nothing more than a cheap MP3 recorder, doing my podcast in the car on my commute to work. But after a year and a half, I took the plunge, quit my job, and set up a proper studio. Over time, I’ve learned that podcasting is much more than just recording conversations; it’s about connecting, inspiring, and evolving.

In this episode of “Lessons from 15 Years Behind the Mic,” I’m taking a trip down memory lane, revisiting the highs and lows, the challenges and victories, and the many lessons learned along the way. I’ll share the wisdom gleaned from countless hours behind the mic, the mistakes that brought valuable insights, and the rewarding moments when a listener reached out to say how an episode made a difference in their life. It’s a candid reflection of my journey and a way to give back to the community that has given me so much.

I believe that the power of podcasting lies in its ability to foster connection and create a sense of community. Over the years, I’ve interacted with listeners from all walks of life, and it’s these interactions that have shaped the show and my own personal growth. I’ve learned the value of authenticity, resilience, and adaptability in this ever-changing landscape. Whether it was navigating technical difficulties, dealing with criticism, or juggling the demands of life and work, each hurdle has been a stepping stone to growth and a testament to the power of perseverance.

So, tune in as I delve into the heart of podcasting, sharing personal anecdotes, insights, and tips for those embarking on their own podcast journey. Remember, success in podcasting, as in life, doesn’t come overnight. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and the journey is just as important as the destination. It’s my hope that by sharing my experiences, I can inspire others to embrace the journey, the challenges, and the joy of podcasting. After all, it’s the lessons learned along the way that make the journey worth it.

Tickets Now on Sale for the TSP 15 Year Anniversary Celebration

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 1, 2023 by Jack SpirkoJune 1, 2023 3

Save the Date and Come Join Us – Thursday, July 20, 2023 – 5-9PM CST

It seems hard to believe at times but it has been 15 years since TSPC began as a podcast recorded in a car on my daily drive to my office.  In 2010 at just 18 months in, I took TSPC full time and have never looked back.

Officially the show will turn 15 on June 20th, we will be celebrating exactly 1 month past that though to give folks time to make arrangements and come if they want to.  At the 10 year it was an amazing time, but Dorothy and I felt there wasn’t enough food among some other issues.  So Dorothy being the amazing person she is set off to find a better venue.

Get Your Tickets Here

The location is going to be a place called Pin Stripes in the Clear Fork area of Ft. Worth.  Dorothy and I went there last week to scope the place out, try a few drinks and some food.  Bluntly, it was simply amazing.  The venue is perfect we will have the second floor to ourselves, our own dedicated bar staff, a bowling lounge area with 4 totally private lanes and an awesome outdoor terrace.

Food is going to be amazing.  The entire party will last 4 hours, 5-9 PM CST and food service will be a buffet that will last about 90 minutes.  The food is truly elevated and they just keep bringing it so if you end up hungry it will be your own fault.

Here is the full menu…

  • Char-Grilled Burgers
  • Spicy Grilled Chicken
  • Chicago-Style Baby Back Ribs
  • Baked Mac & Cheese
  • Garden Salad
  • Parmesan Potato Chips
  • House Made Cookies and Ghirardelli Tripple Chocolate Brownies
  • Regular and DeCaf Coffee
  • Hot and Iced Tea
  • Sodas

To be able to provide something this awesome we have to charge for it.  Our cost is about 80 dollars a person so that is what will will charge per ticket.  This includes all you want from the buffet, unlimited bowling (just grab a pair of shoes and a ball) and hanging out with some of the coolest people you will ever meet.  The bar will be a cash bar, but everything else is included in the ticket price.

Get Your Tickets Here

A note on the bowling lounge.  While I expect not everyone will use the lanes I rented them for those who will but as much for the space inside the lounge as well.  It is absolutely perfect to hang out and visit with others in and gives us a ton of total room so we can let 75 folks come.   That is the thing, it really is a hard cap limit so if you want tickets you need to order them now.

The area itself is great with some cool bars you can walk to in minutes from the location if for after parties and such.  Pin Stripes itself closes at 9 on Thursdays, so that is when they will ask us to leave.

But why Thursday Jack?

So, here is the deal.  I am only charging what I have to, to break even on things.  I want people to have a blast, eat amazing food and have awesome memories.  If I did this on a weekend the cost would be more like 125 – 150 a person.  Thursday is a pretty dead night for most bars and restaurants so it brings the cost down and let us negociate a better price.   My thoughts are people who take off work to come can just take off Friday too and have a very long awesome weekend.  One, that gets kicked off with a hell of a party and a hell of a great group of people to spend time with.

Etekcity 4 Pack of LED Lanterns – Item of the Day

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 1, 2023 by Modern SurvivalJune 1, 2023 18

Price Alert – One of the best selling of all time items from TspAZ is on sale today at 15% off and the regular price is always a great deal anyway.  These are a great go to for your black out kit, awesome extra lighting when camping and fishing and kids love them. I have sold literally thousands of these and as cheap as they are, still no complaints on quality.

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Etekcity’s 4 Pack of LED Lanterns.  These things are an incredible value and are the result of a lot of research.  These are an incredible value 4 units for $29.99 or about 7.50 a piece.  This is the upgraded version of these lights released about 2 years ago.  So what did the upgrade add?

Three things, first they now have a dimmer switch, with four different light levels, that can extend the insane battery life even more, or it is just nice when you want less light.  Also the bases on the new models now have magnets so they will stick to any metal surface.  On top of this the tops now have a storage space.  It isn’t a ton of space but plenty for a small bit of cordage, some tinder, extra keys, etc.

I have previously reviewed The Streamlight Siege Lantern.  And I still think it is the highest quality LED lantern on the market.

It is also 26-114 dollars based on the options you pick.  Even at the lowest priced option if you wanted one for every room of a 8 room house, you are looking at 200 bucks.  Frankly for this type of thing, it is over kill.  I wanted an affordable solution for every room lighting during an extended blackout.

I started looking around and dozens of companies are marketing these little pop up lanterns with minor differences.  The housings are almost identical.  Some are very inexpensive and some cost almost as much as The Siege, none are as good though.

Well I love Etekcity which has a lot of really cool stuff much of which I have reviewed in the past like their Thermal Gun, Power Failure Lights and Remote Control Electrical Outlets.  So I checked and back when I first found these the originals were $32.99 with free shipping.  They were also an Amazon best seller with over a 22,000 reviews and an average of 4.5 stars.

But I always check the one star reviews before picking an item.  Many times you can tell said reviews are written by idiots.  In this case, however; they bothered me.  Almost all of them said they got one that didn’t work out of the box and then never worked again.  So I began checking other options, heck it is almost like ever single brand of these things are clones.   They all have great reviews, a few bad reviews and all the different ones have almost the exact same complaint, dead on arrival or after one use.

So I contacted Etekcity who has great service and said basically that it is understandable at this price point and selling so many a few will have problems, but what is your return/replacement policy and this is what I got back in return, within an hour by the way!

Hello Jack,

Thank you for reaching out to us and thank you for all the feedback we appreciate it. Honestly we sell hundreds if not a thousand of these lanterns a day and we do have problems with them, they are not perfect.

Typically the main issue is a little toggle switch in the base that likely during shipping breaks unfortunately and once in awhile the top of the lantern is cracked or loose again probably due to shipping.

Once the lantern makes it to the customer and they arrive in good order we never hear from the customer because they seem to not fail with normal use.

We usually only hear from the customers the moment they open the package and find the damage and then we immediately send out a replacement and then all lanterns come with a 1 year warranty.

These are not the worlds greatest lantern but for around $7 each, they are one of amazons best sellers and we think for the price they are the best around.

thank you

Okay so every single one of those one star reviews are people that simply could have gotten a free replacement, on a $5-8.00 product?  Honestly this is why I have recommended so many things from Etekcity.

Talk about honesty in a nut shell they said, “hey look when you sell this many products of this type some will have problems, but we stand by and replace them”, what more could you ask for for about 6-8 bucks?

With that I was sold, I got two sets, we have them in our black out kits and if one fails, I don’t care I have 8!  That said all of mine have worked just fine and were in perfect shape when they got here.  But this was important to me, I wanted to be sure that if you did have a problem, Etekcity would fix it and I wanted to give you a lot cost option for back up lighting.  And hey even at this stupid cheap price, batteries are included!  Please consider that even cheap ass Rayovac Batteries are about 8 bucks for a 12-Pack.

And these do that, they will give you 12 full hours of light off three measly AA batteries.  So to me at the cost and for what they do this is the best deal in back up LED lighting for your house and your BOK (Black Out Kit).    So I really recommend you pick up at least one set of Etekcity’s 4 Pack of LED Lanterns.

Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TspAz.com

P.S. – I have noticed a few negative reviews complaining of leaking batteries ruining these lanterns.  Here is my rule for batteries, never store them in your devices for long periods of time.  I don’t care if the device is expensive or cheap, I don’t care of the batteries are generic or top brand, just don’t do it.

We keep flashlights (mostly D-Cell Maglites) around the house, we use them all the time.  Used devices never seem to have this problem.  When they start to weaken we replace them.

In our BOK we keep our devices and with them a ziplock bag with 4 sets of batteries per device in the bag.  We use our power failure lights and flashlights to retrieve our BOK and simply put the batteries in at that point and time.

Note that it is true that battery manufacturers are required by law to replace any device that leaking batteries destroy.  That doesn’t help in the middle of a black out though does it?  Simply put any device that is not used often, take the batteries out of it, store them with it and save yourself the headache.
