Today we dig into what I see as the four types of jobs, and why understanding them matters a hell of a lot more than most people think. Every job you’ve ever had, or ever will have, fits into one of these categories. I don’t care if you’re stocking shelves at midnight, closing seven-figure deals, or launching your own company. There’s a reason you’re doing it, and knowing that reason tells you whether you’re stuck, moving forward, or spinning your wheels.
These four classes aren’t about ego, degrees, or corporate ladders. They’re about clarity. Class One jobs keep the lights on. Class Two jobs pay decent for work you don’t hate. Class Three jobs teach you something that changes the game later. Class Four is what you’d do for free if money didn’t matter. For most folks, it only shows up if you build it yourself.
I also talk about how these categories can overlap or shift. They can show up in combos. Life isn’t a neat little box. You might be working two classes at once, or bouncing between them based on what’s going on in your life. That’s normal. That’s real.
The key is to stop pretending you don’t know why you’re working the job you have. Start designing the next one on purpose.

- Basic Intro to the Concept
- All jobs fall into 4 reasons why we take them
- Not good vs. bad, but some serve long-term goals better
- You can move between types or stack them
- Knowing the type tells you what to do next
- This is lifestyle design, not career ladder bullshit
- The 4 Classes of Jobs
- Class One: Survival Work
- You need money, period—take what you can get
- Entry point for most people
- Builds discipline and makes you more employable
- Gets you in the game and out of the house
- Use it short-term, but smart—contacts, hustle, interview reps
- Class Two: Best Pay for What You’ll Do
- Decent work with decent pay, not “shit work”
- Comfortable, but growth stalls fast
- Most people settle here and get bitter
- Useful to fund big moves or gain stable footing
- Has some Class Three overlap if you stay sharp
- Class Three: Strategic Growth
- Chosen to learn, not just earn
- May come with a raise—or a pay cut
- Must be part of a bigger plan
- New skill = new opportunity = new leverage
- Beware of calling it growth if it’s just sideways movement
- Class Four: You’d Do It for Free
- You love it, and you’re great at it
- Rare in jobs, mostly built not found
- Can exist in companies—rare employer match
- Needs to fund your life or it’s just a hobby
- Don’t skip survival work chasing this too early
- Class One: Survival Work
- Where They Cross Over
- You can hold multiple types at once (day job + side hustle)
- Jobs can shift types over time (Class Two to Three or vice versa)
- Sometimes you drop back to Class One to reset or refocus or just for money/contacts
- Recognize your job type honestly—no self-delusion
- Final Thoughts and Advice
- There’s no shame in any type if you use it right
- Never settle—always be designing
- Take any job that gets you closer to what you want
- Quit crying about not being promoted—make moves
- Build a life, not a resume
