Nick Ferguson in North Texas

Expert Council Member Nick Ferguson is in North Texas this week, well actually he is at my house.  As mentioned on air the last two days he will be headed down the I20 corridor back home tomorrow and is offering consulting to anyone in the area, primarily between DFW and Shreveport Louisiana while here.

Nick is an awesome guy, he wanted to help out here and today I gave him some plumbing work for one of my new aquaponics systems while I was recording.  He didn’t just do it he came up with one simple modification that will make my life better for years to come.  That is the power of a good consultant and frankly simply a fresh set of eyes.

Nick can help you with anything from full permaculture design of an entire property down to simple layouts for your homestead from gardening, to compost systems, to livestock management etc.  Having talked to many of his clients his consulting always more than pays for itself in the long run, usually in the first few months in fact.  Everything beyond that is gravy, and with Nick you get a lot of gravy.

If you are in the DFW area or east of it on the way back to Louisiana this is a great opportunity to work with Nick.  To set something up email him at nick at homegrownliberty.com with your location, what you are looking for and a number to get in touch with you at.  He already has one stop booked tomorrow, it is first come first serve during this time, so don’t delay, get with him now and save the travel costs on his first class permaculture and homestead consultation.

Anker Astro E7 26800mAh Portable Charger – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day the Anker Astro E7 26800mAh Portable Charger.  I have tried a lot of back up power packs and this one is my current favorite.  This product has a great value to price ratio, coming in at 61.99 with free shipping on prime.  It currently has over 840 reviews on Amazon with 4.5 stars overall.

Frankly, Anker is just a stellar company, they build high quality products and back them with a great 18 month warranty, though I have never had the need to use said warranty.  Next is the power capacity of this particular power pack, 26800mAhs is enough power to charge a

  • iPhone6s 10 times
  • iPad Air 2.5 times
  • iPad Mini 3 times
  • Samsung S6 6.8 times

To put that in perspective I get an easy 24 hours of light use with my iPhone and it still has quite a bit of battery on it.  And if you are in a grid down you minimize use to critical needs, that means this should keep your coms up with your iPhone for a good two weeks.

To me your phone is your lifeline.  It brings you news, it lets you call for help, communicate with loved ones and more.  While I have a generator and several battery banks in my home I am not always in my home.  So I always keep one of these in my pack fully charged as a final back up on power needs.  I recommend you consider the Anker Astro E7 26800mAh Portable Charger for your own needs.

Aromacare Pet Ear Wipes – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Aromacare Pet Ear Wipes.  I have tried a variety of different products for this need and have settled on these.  As many of you know we have three dogs.  A giant German Shepard named Max, a Pit-Pointer Mix named Charlie and a Pitskey named Lucy.  A Pitskey is a Siberian Husky crossed with a Pit Bull by the way.

I use this product on all of them.  They get a good ear cleaning on the first of the month when they get their heart worm medication.  Simple and easy to remember.  For Charlie and Lucy this is all they need.  Generally a bit of gunk comes out of both of them but it isn’t much.  Their ears stay clean and don’t put off any odors at all.

Max though has always been a problem pup when it comes to his ears, and worse he doesn’t really like having them cleaned.  I don’t know if you have ever tried to get a 150 pound dog to do something he doesn’t want to do, but it is a hell of a case for good training.  Charlie and Lucy seem to actually enjoy getting their ears cleaned but not Max, it is like dealing with a pouting puppy every time.

But we get it done and it works.  Before I found these I had to clean his ears about 1-3 times a week, depending on the time of the year.  Some nights he’d wake me up shaking his head because his ears bothered him badly.  I’d have to get up and deal with his sulking and clean his ears at 2Am.

Now I simply clean Max’s on the 1st and 15th and even he seems to remain clear, happy and free of the dreaded “stinky ear”.  As the label indicates they use a combination of Aloe and Eucalyptus oil.

This certainly is not some beyond organic all natural product and it has some conventional ingredients but nothing I consider truly harmful and above all they work.  And they work damn good.  The price is right at 8 dollars for 100 pads and at my use rate one pack of 100 lasts me about a year.  Note that they may not last as long for you if you have more dogs of a pup with a real problem needing a lot more cleaning.

On Max this is what I did, when I got them I cleaned his ears once a day for a week, he was not happy about this.  I then went to once a week for a month, then went to my routine of twice a month.  I have been doing that now for about 4 months and he has stayed a happy and clean eared canine.

Anyway if you want to keep your packs ears in top notch shape, I recommend checking out Aromacare Pet Ear Wipes today.  I think you will quickly see why they have 4.5 out of 5 stars with over 330 reviews along with an A grade on Fakespot.

Ras El Hanout Seasoning from Pinch Spice Market – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Ras El Hanout seasoning from Pinch Spice Market.  Pinch has a variety of interesting stuff I will be trying soon.  I used the Raas El Hanout (pronounced like – ross el ha newt) in my first ever attempt at tagine cooking to do a tagine quail.  While I still need to dial in cook time and temp settings a bit to master the tagine, the flavor was off the hook.

I am a big fan of making up your own mixes but this is one I am happy to let someone else do.  Ras El Hanout seasoning is sort of like the Moroccan answer to curry.  It is curry like in flavor (similar to a yellow Indian curry) but not as strong in that “curry way”.  I’ll put it this way, my wife doesn’t like Indian yellow curries at all, but she loved this stuff.  And yet I find them quite similar.

The way it is like curry though is there is no one way to make a Ras El Hanout, every cook in Morocco is likely to have their own, and of course theirs is “the best”.  This mix uses a lot of spices, you will see recipes for it with anywhere from 15-30 different ingredients.  This brand was the best I could find, the company says they worked on it for over six months and the effort shows.  It is made up of a whopping 26 spices, they are,

  • cumin
  • black pepper
  • paprika
  • grains of paradise
  • coriander
  • turmeric
  • cayenne
  • lemon peel
  • cinnamon
  • cardamom
  • allspice
  • juniper
  • nutmeg
  • glangal
  • ginger
  • mace
  • fenugreek
  • mustard
  • clove
  • anise seed
  • licorice
  • rose
  • lavender
  • ajwain
  • hibiscus

Yea with a list that long of so many exotic spices I am content to let someone else mix it.  It is a bit pricey at 12 bucks for 4 ounces but a little goes a long way.  For the quail I put four quail in an unglazed tagine, it is important to properly season a tagine before using it.  I added colored baby carrots, fingerling potatoes, shallots, olive oil, water, garlic, lime zest and bay.  I also used about two teaspoons of the Ras El Hanout.

The quail leg quarters were perfect but I slightly over cooked the breast, I think I need to cook at a lower temp and sear the birds before putting them in the tagine.  Also a bit more liquid to more braise the quails.  They would be best cut into quarters too, so they braise better.  These were older cull birds and since they free range in the aviary they do get a bit tough.  Next up will be tagine venison!

The liquid in the tagine was a wonderful clear yellow broth, it screams out to go on rice or couscous.  We really try to keep carbs as low as we can but I am going to have to make up a bit of either at some point try with this.  I would also say saffron would be a good addition to the basic recipe of a tagine dish.

This seasoning though need not be confined to tagine cooking, it will add huge flavor to almost anything.  Fried potatoes would be exotic as hell seasoned with this.  I can only imagine what slow cooked lamb in this stuff will be like.   Based on the taste of the quail it seems like this stuff will have a love affair with chicken, slow cooked, grilled, saute’d, it doesn’t matter.  In fact here are a bunch of ideas for using Ras El Hanout.

This is one of those things that is like a cooking cheat code, sort of like a curry paste or a stock paste is.  You want to take something in a certain direction, add this to taste and you are a kitchen rock star that night.

Oh and did you see the one thing not in this stuff?  Salt!  This is good in a lot of ways.  First I hate paying for high end organic spices when 10-20 percent by weight is fricken salt!  That is not good economics.  Second I like to control my own salt levels.  But I realized that some people have to omit or severely limit salt, wow, this is a product for you, massive flavor, no salt.

So give Ras El Hanout seasoning from Pinch Spice Market and I think you are really going to enjoy it.  Spices and seasonings are a great thing for preppers to store on hand.  If you are inclined to store some extra of this stuff, I would go with a well sealed ball jar.  Don’t use vac seal bags with anything like this, you end up with bad clumping, trust me I know.

Episode-2238- Surf Fishing and Sanibel Island AAR

Cero Mackerel Was New Fish for Me on this Trip.

For Dorothy the beach is a place to walk, pick up shells and sit around and do nothing. While I enjoy much of that, especially with a Jimmy Buffet approved drink in hand, I also love to fish the shore. There is an excitement about surf fishing that to me just doesn’t exist in a lake or a river. Do a bit of research on any lake or river (fresh water river) and likely there are 6-12 fish if that which are commonly caught on rod and reel.

One of several Snook caught on my recent trip.

When you look at fish you are likely to catch the number is likely to be closer to 3-4 than 12.  And frequently to catch any real variety you will have to employ a variety of techniques, baits, depths, approaches to catch any significant number of fish species.

Now fishing with mostly life shrimp and one method, these are the species I caught over 9 days on the Sanibel island coast…

  • Cero Mackerel
  • Spanish Mackerel
  • Snook
  • Ladyfish
  • Whiting
  • Hard Head Catfish
  • Jack Crevalle
  • Blue Runner
  • Speckled Sea Trout

That is 9 species and I am leaving out some of the little odd bait fish stuff that also managed to get hooked like Pig and Pin fish. With that I’d be over a dozen.

I also took a guided fishing trip and focused on big fish.  While we didn’t get any real monsters and gave up catching a lot of little stuff to target something bigger, I did get to cross an item off my bucket list.   That was a Goliath Grouper in the 50 pound range.

A 50ish Pound Goliath Grouper Caught about a Mile off the Beach

I also caught a black tip shark in the 20 pound range on the same trip.  On top of this I got to see a small shark cut a nice Jack in half with a single bite, allowing me to reel in the head, which we then used to catch the grouper.

A Nice Blacktip Taken in Pine Island Sound on the Bay Side of Sanibel Island

Now I have had some good days/weeks on lakes and rivers but nothing like this!

I have fished the Texas coast many times and while not quite the diversity of Florida’s coast it is also a great deal of fun. I have often caught red fish, sea trout, whiting, sand trout, croaker, sail cats, hard heads and a lot of other stuff in a single trip.

I have also managed to catch a few small black tip sharks down there. I even remember one day when the surf was really clear and I was standing about waste deep on the second sand bar and several of us watched a bull shark that was at least 8 feet cruise by just 10 yards in front of us, while we all backed slowly onto the bars shallower area, no one panicked and the fishing continued.  This is why I love surf fishing, you never know what you might catch or what might happen.

Etekcity 4 Pack of LED Lanterns – Item of the Day

eteklanternsEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Etekcity’s 4 Pack of LED Lanterns.  These things are an incredible value and are the result of a lot of research.   I have previously reviewed The Streamlight Siege Lantern.  And I still think it is the highest quality LED lantern on the market.

It is also 26-114 dollars based on the options you pick.  Even at the lowest priced option if you wanted one for every room of a 8 room house, you are looking at 200 bucks.  Frankly for this type of thing, it is over kill.  I wanted an affordable solution for every room lighting during an extended blackout.

I started looking around and dozens of companies are marketing these little pop up lanterns with minor differences.  The housings are almost identical.  Some are very inexpensive and some cost almost as much as The Siege, none are as good though.

Well I love Etekcity which has a lot of really cool stuff much of which I have reviewed in the past like their Thermal Gun, Power Failure Lights and Remote Control Electrical Outlets.  So I checked and they have this four pack for only $22.99 with free shipping.  This pack is an Amazon best seller with over a 4000 reviews and an average of 5 stars.

But I always check the one star reviews before picking an item.  Many times you can tell said reviews are written by idiots.  In this case, however; they bothered me.  Almost all of them say they got one that didn’t work out of the box and then never worked again.  So I began checking other options, heck it is almost like ever single brand of these things are clones.   They all have great reviews, a few bad reviews and all the different ones have almost the exact same complaint, dead on arrival or after one use.

So I contacted Etekcity who has great service and said basically that it is understandable at this price point and selling so many a few will have problems, but what is your return/replacement policy and this is what I got back in return, within an hour by the way!

Hello Jack,

Thank you for reaching out to us and thank you for all the feedback we appreciate it. Honestly we sell hundreds if not a thousand of these lanterns a day and we do have problems with them, they are not perfect.

Typically the main issue is a little toggle switch in the base that likely during shipping breaks unfortunately and once in awhile the top of the lantern is cracked or loose again probably due to shipping.

Once the lantern makes it to the customer and they arrive in good order we never hear from the customer because they seem to not fail with normal use.

We usually only hear from the customers the moment they open the package and find the damage and then we immediately send out a replacement and then all lanterns come with a 1 year warranty.

These are not the worlds greatest lantern but for around $6 each, they are one of amazons best sellers and we think for the price they are the best around.

thank you

Okay so every single one of those one star reviews are people that simply could  have gotten a free replacement, on a $5.75 product?  Honestly this is why I have recommended so many things from Etekcity.

Talk about honesty in a nut shell they said, “hey look when you sell this many products of this type some will have problems, but we stand by and replace them”, what more could you ask for for about 6 bucks?

With that I was sold, I got two sets, we have them in our black out kits and if one fails, I don’t care I have 8!  That said all of mine have worked just fine and were in perfect shape when they got here.  But this was important to me, I wanted to be sure that if you did have a problem, Etekcity would fix it and I wanted to give you a lot cost option for back up lighting.  And hey even at this stupid cheap price, batteries are included!  Please consider that even cheap ass Rayovac Batteries are about 8 bucks for a 12-Pack.

And these do that, they will give you 12 full hours of light off three measly AA batteries.  So to me at the cost and for what they do this is the best deal in back up LED lighting for your house and your BOK (Black Out Kit).    So I really recommend you pick up at least one Etekcity’s 4 Pack of LED Lanterns if you don’t have that base covered already.  They seem like a cool gift idea as well.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop on Amazon you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. – I have noticed a few negative reviews complaining of leaking batteries ruining these lanterns.  Here is my rule for batteries, never store them in your devices for long periods of time.  I don’t care if the device is expensive or cheap, I don’t care of the batteries are generic or top brand, just don’t do it.

We keep flashlights (mostly D-Cell Maglites) around the house, we use them all the time.  Used devices never seem to have this problem.  When they start to weaken we replace them.

In our BOK we keep our devices and with them a ziplock bag with 4 sets of batteries per device in the bag.  We use our power failure lights and flashlights to retrieve our BOK and simply put the batteries in at that point and time.

Note that it is true that battery manufacturers are required by law to replace any device that leaking batteries destroy.  That doesn’t help in the middle of a black out though does it?  Simply put any device that is not used often, take the batteries out of it, store them with it and save yourself the headache.

P.S.S. – Since I first reviewed this item in 2016 we have sold hundreds of them, given they are four packs that is thousands of individual lanterns.  Total complaints I have received in that time is zero.  I still have 8 of these as does my son, they all work and never seem to run out of battery life.  They do now have a new model with a “dimmer switch” which should extend battery life even further.

This set is 28.99 a four pack and has the same warranty.  I don’t have any experience with it and I do have to say two things.  Given the company and all their other products it should be great.  That said when you add something to an electronics board, it isn’t really an add, it is a complete “respin” in other words a new product.  So you can’t expect that it will be just as good or better, it might be but it is in the end a new product.

jackspirkoToday on The Survival Podcast I take your questions on North Korea, the Space Force, fact checking, prepping goals, paleo prepping, jump starters, Monsanto, budgeting, kids, dog training and more.

Make sure if you submit content for a feedback show that you put something like “comment for jack”, “question for jack” or “article for jack” in the subject line to assure proper identification for my screening process.

Please understand I receive several hundred emails a day and can’t get them all on the air.

I also do put out a lot of information on Facebook from emails that I can’t fit on the program though so keep em coming.

Join Me Today As I Respond to Your Calls and Discuss…

  • Why the US would want a “Space Force” – just the facts
  • Stop using “Snopes is leftist” as a rebuttal, it is simply ad hominem fallacy
  • Jack is a jerk again, and that makes him happy
  • How do you store what you eat and eat what you store on Paleo
  • The limitations of “jump starters” and why Harris is wrong about them
  • Monsanto is dead, well, Monsanto is now Bayer, the why is important
