Episode-2158- Jeff Reiland on Permaculture Landscaping in the Suburbs

Jeff Reiland has worked in Commercial Agriculture and Biotechnology over 20 years striving to “feed the world” but now he is a Designer of Healthy & Productive Landscapes that Enable Resilient Communities. Jeff’s business, Abundant Design LLC, and personal lifestyle both center around living in harmony with the environment.

Growing up in rural Iowa he spent a lot of time outside on and around his family’s acreage, where he helped his dad and mom build their home. Scholarships and summer construction jobs helped him pay for college where he got his degree in Biology and Environmental Studies. Following college he did GPS field mapping and soil sampling, but after his company closed that part of the business he worked on a landscaping crew and dabbled in starting his own landscape company.

Job security and expectations drew him back to science, livestock and companion animal vaccine production and research, then to genetically modified crop research and testing. Interest in survival topics following Y2K led him eventually to the Survival Podcast, where Jack and then Diego Footer of Permaculture Voices inspired him to begin his entrepreneurial journey. Jeff is in the MSB and a PermaEthos Founding Member where he took his PDC.

Abundant Design strives for beautiful and productive landscapes, that will actually improve the quality of our waters, fertility of our soil, and the health of our planet.

He runs a local meetup for permaculture, teaches classes at a learning farm and volunteers at a local community orchard.  He joins us today to discuss permaculture landscaping in the suburbs.

Zicome Set of 4 Basting Brushes – Item of the Day

brushes

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Zicome Set of 4 Basting Brushes.  Simple little item but these are the best thing out there in value and quality I can find.  I really enjoy cooking that is no secret and one of the great tricks to add flavor to food it is dry season and grill it, then baste it right at the end.

Now let me tell you silicone is the way to go here.  Unlike nylon or natural fibers it won’t burn on the grill when you hit it by accident.  The problem is every single silicon brush I have ever found is a multi piece arrangement.  The silicone head and bristles are in one way or another attached to the handle in a way in which they can be removed.

So you know what happens over time, the head gets loose and starts falling off.  So when I found these I knew I had found the solution to this issue.  These are formed from a single piece of silicone, so the head can’t fall off.

While we are on this subject let me give you one of my go to bastes for lighter fair like say chicken wings or quail or something like that.

  • 3TBS of Soy Sauce
  • 1TSP of Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 TBS of Hot Sauce (I like Cholula)
  • 5 TBS of Jalapeno Infused Olive Oil
  • 5 TBS of White Wine
  • 1 TBS of Mustard (plain yellow is fine for this)

Put all this into a jar, put the lid on the jar and shake the heck out of it.  The mustard in this is an emulsifier.   In that capacity it will allow you to blend all the ingredients and they won’t separate including the oil. If you do have any problem with separation, squirt in a bit more mustard and shake again until you don’t.  Since I am not looking for a lot of mustard flavor in this I use as little as is needed to get the job done.

Brush this on to your meat in the last few minutes of your cooking.  To guild the lily a bit then sprinkle toasted sesame seeds on the sticking coating after you take it off the grill.

So for making this and other great bastes and not ending up with your brush head in the coals, check out the Zicome Set of 4 Basting Brushes today.

Ersatz in the Confederacy – When the Shit Really Hit the Fan

ersatzEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Ersatz in the Confederacy: Shortages and Substitutes on the Southern Home Front by Mary Elizabeth Massey.  I thought this would be a good time to feature this book as we just wrapped up The Civil War in the history segment.

So what is an ersatz, it is an item made or used as a substitute, typically an inferior one, for something else.  In other words when you don’t have coffee you use roasted chicory root for instance.  But if you read this book you will see it was much deeper and traumatic than that for those that lived though this time.

We toss around the term, “shit hit the fan” a lot in the prepper space.  Consider though that from the day this nation was founded until today, there has never been a time in America where the shit hit the fan as hard as it did for the south in the war between the states.   Great depression you say?  Hold on and read this book.

The northern strategy to win the war quickly went from a full on military over run (which didn’t work) to a strangle hold approach.  The north had a naval advantage and control of rail and greater ability to communicate with things like the new telegraph system.

Even in the parts of the south were a musket ball never flew in anger, suffering was great.  As one reviewer of this book put it,

“During the WW2, men and women on the home-front were encouraged to “Use it up,wear it out, make do, or do without.” After reading this book, however, the men and women of the Southern home-front did that and more.

From 1941 to 1945, butchers may have been asked for a free soup bone for the dog, but as the Civil war dragged on, it wasn’t unusual for a Confederate butcher to hang dressed rat in the window…when one was available.”

Talk about hard times!  And this book doesn’t just tell you what they went through, it tells you what they did to get through it.  If you are worried about stability and long term security of our society.  And if you feel that true hardship may again fall our people, this book is required reading.

Additionally if you just have an interest in real history beyond dates and facts you should read this book.  It tells the real story of the suffering of civilians in time of war.  Our nation has largely been insulated from the direct effect of war since the end of The Civil War in 1865.  Hence the American people have a highly disconcerting tolerance for war.  Perhaps a reminder of what it is like for those not carrying powder and shot may alleviate that a bit?

Additionally as preppers we should be keen on knowing how people actually survived a true multi year crisis that included a hot war zone in their back yard, advancing and resource taking enemy troops and shortages of anything and everything necessary for survival and comfort.  If this sounds like something you would like to know more about check out Ersatz in the Confederacy: Shortages and Substitutes on the Southern Home Front today.

P.S. – This book was first published in the 50s and reintroduced in the early 90s.  I guess that is why no kindle version exists.  I have linked to the soft cover, but if you prefer a hard cover version, they have that option as well.

Aurora Fire Starter and UST Titanium BASE Case – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is my personal EDC for fire starting that I keep on my key chain.  It is a combination of the Aurora Fire Starter by Solo Scientific and the Ultimate Survival Technologies Aluminum 0.5 BASE Case.

In the photo above you can see these items on my personal key chain.  I just checked my Amazon order history and are you ready for this, I got these items and put them on my key chain on August 5th, 2012.  So yea they hold up!

First on the firestarter, I have always preferred ferrocerium rods to about any other option.  These are commonly called ferro rods probably because ferrocerium is hard to say and harder to spell.   These things just work, even wet they throw hot sparks that will light any good tinder and get you a flame.

I chose the Aurora Fire Starter by Solo Scientific because it has a screw on cover with a built in striker.  When closed on the chain it make a reasonable impact weapon as well, functioning like a small kubaton.

But you need tinder and that is were the Ultimate Survival Technologies Aluminum 0.5 BASE Case comes in.  I simply have mine stuffed with cotton balls with a dab of vaseline on the top of them.  To make a fire I fray some cotton and then put some vaseline on some as well, this gets a good fire going almost anywhere you can find decent fuel wood.

Perhaps you already have a EDC fire making solution, but unless you have one that involves a ferro rod I recommend adding one.  To me they are by far the best best for reliable fire starting in just about any situation.  The fact that I have been carrying these items for almost 5 years now says something about their durability and reliability.
