1400 Gallon Timber Frame Tank Aquatic System Build

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 30, 2017 by Modern SurvivalJune 30, 2017

This project was a long time coming, I transformed a platform we had built for a water catchment tank into a 1400ish gallon fish tank using a EDPM liner. The system currently has 4 ebb and flow beds but this is not true aquaponics but rather an aquatic system using a aquaponics component as a bio filtration system. The body of this is built with 4×4 pressure treated lumber designed for ground contact.  The first layer is 4 inches below grade and held into the limestone with 12 inch hot dipped galvanized spikes, which were aided in penetration by hammer … Continue reading →

Remember to be on a show like this one just pick up your phone and call 866-65-THINK. The best way to improve your chances of being on the air is ask your question or make your point up front, then provide details. Also please do your best to call from a quiet area with a good connection and speak up so you can be well heard. While I can’t put all calls on the air … Continue reading →

Pickerel Rush an Edible and Beautiful Plant for Your Water Garden

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 29, 2017 by Modern SurvivalJune 29, 2017

Big thanks to Nick Burtner at School of Permaculture (https://schoolofpermaculture.com) for posting about this plant being edible on Facebook. Been growing it for years and never knew it was that type of resource.  The seeds are pretty good raw, I would say adding them to salads would be a good use, I am going to try toasting them gently to crisp them up a bit and bring out more flavor, when I do I will report back to you guys on the results. Also here is a video by Green Dean on using this plant for edible purposes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKy6Ivh0HaE

Ben Page starting listening to the survival podcast in July 2008 while going to chiropractic college in Davenport, Iowa. He lived 5 miles from college rode his bike to collage. It took him depending on the season between 15 and 45 minutes to get to college. He used that time to listen to the survival podcast and learn about modern survivalism and now considers himself to be a modern survivalist. PDC in North Texas with Nicholas Burtner

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 28, 2017 by Modern SurvivalJune 28, 2017

Guys I just heard from Nicholas Burtner, who runs the School of Permaculture not too far from me here in North Texas, that they are now enrolling for their 2017 fall permaculture design course that start on July 8th. It is cool because first off it is local, and the team at SOP has extensive experience, locally, and in more 7 countries with a myriad of climate regions and design challenges. Its flexible as it runs one weekend a month for a span of 6 months so you actually get to know your instructors and peers. There is nothing quite … Continue reading →

Episode-2032- Planning Your Future When the Future is Uncertain

We talk a lot about what I call “lifestyle design” around here.  When people hear that term they get the general idea, because the words are common. Lifestyle – The way in which a person lives. ~ Design – Purpose, planning, intention and thought behind an action. So lifestyle design means to put purpose, planning, intention and thought into how you live your life.  So yep people generally get the basic concept, what people usually struggle with though is designing a lifestyle for today that is resilient for tomorrow. I think we have all had those moments, we are happy, … Continue reading →

S3 – Duck Chronicles 24 – 12 Turkeys Out The Door

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 27, 2017 by Modern SurvivalJune 27, 2017

Well it has been long enough in the chicken tractor for the turkey polts so today they have freedom. Unlike chickens and ducks they really bond with people and have no real fear, so the biggest danger right now is accidentally stepping on one of them. P.S. – Product I mentioned for cracked heals, I love this stuff http://amzn.to/2sXk3mF

Episode 23 of the Duck Chronicles – Full Swales and Happy Ducks

The Survival Podcast Posted on June 24, 2017 by Modern SurvivalJune 24, 2017

A rainy day in June especially late June is a gift in North Central Texas, especially when it comes without baseball sized hail, deadly lightning and swirling clouds of death and destruction. Now when that rain totals over two inches and takes 5-6 hours in the very early morning to come down, and then it keeps steadily slowing raining for 5 more hours, man, heaven.  You can keep your clear blue skys and sunny days this time of year, give me a few days a moth like this and I and the farm are set. The results are full swales, … Continue reading →
