The Duck Chronicles Episode Twenty Six – The Weeds and Pest Fix

The Survival Podcast Posted on February 20, 2015 by Modern SurvivalFebruary 20, 2015

Today on The Duck Chronicles Episode Twenty Six – The Weeds and Pest Fix we start with a weight gain report.  I weighed a few of the girls and got an average of 26.9 ounces or right at 1.7 pounds. So just over a half a pound gained in the last 6 days when they weighed in at 1.14 pounds on the 14th. Keep in mind that 23 days ago they weighed about 1.8 ounces each!  That means in 23 days they grew 13 fold their original size.  My hope is to get them to about 2.5 pounds before full … Continue reading →

Rocket Mass Heaters 4-DVD Set from Paul Wheaton

The Survival Podcast Posted on February 19, 2015 by Modern SurvivalFebruary 19, 2015

Over the years I have done lots of stuff with my buddy Paul Wheaton. He has been a huge supporter of TSP and is constantly doing innovative things to push permaculture further. His latest project is a kickstarter for a new set of Rocket Mass Heater DVDs. I have seen his previous rocket mass heater DVDs, and let me tell you, these new ones look like a huge improvement. Much more information, better video quality, and the rewards for the kickstarter are pretty damn cool. The four videos will be: DVD 1: Cob Style – A cob style rocket mass … Continue reading →

Episode-1522- Debt, The Good, The Bad and The Evil

The Survival Podcast Posted on February 18, 2015 by Modern SurvivalFebruary 18, 2015

Did Jack Spirko just acknowledge there is such a thing as good debt?  Yes I did and I always have.  It ain’t consumer debt though and it ain’t student loan debt. Today I have to admit something though, in my early days I was totally anti credit card, and adamant that there was no justification for using one.  My opinion on that hasn’t changed, I still think it is true in 2008, but it also is no longer 2008, much has changed, so my opinion in 2015 is different.  Today I need to do this long over due episode. Now … Continue reading →

The Survival Podcast Posted on February 18, 2015 by Modern SurvivalFebruary 18, 2015

Today on The Duck Chronicles Episode Twenty Four – 8 Muscovies More we have new members of the flock.  7 new Mucovy ducks and 1 new Muscovy Drake. We also have one of our ducklings with a limp, I talk about how that is more of an issue with ducks than with chickens but how it generally works itself out anyway. I also show you were the adults are being encouraged to work next, some of the work ahead for me, some more hedge rows we have planned and a few other things.

Episode-1521- Can You Actually Earn a Living with a Permaculture Business

The Survival Podcast Posted on February 17, 2015 by Modern SurvivalFebruary 17, 2015

I was recently told by one listener that PDCs seem like a pyramid scheme, he basically stated, that everyone thinks they are going to take one and then teach them to others and so on.  I don’t know where that person got this idea from?  I have never sold a PDC on such an idea and I know of no one who has ever done so, ever. Anyway he wanted to know also if I thought you could actually make a living on less than 1000 acres.  I find this laughable in some ways.  I mean Luke Calahan was making … Continue reading →

The Duck Chronicles Episode Twenty Three – Birdsfoot Trefoil and a Willow Tree

The Survival Podcast Posted on February 17, 2015 by Modern SurvivalFebruary 17, 2015

Today on The Duck Chronicles Episode Twenty Three – Birdsfoot Trefoil and a Willow Tree we continue to see growth in our young ducks.  If you want Birdsfoot Trefoil Seed here is the Source I use Birdsfoot Trefoil at Hearne Seed. I discuss why they have been given the best grass and our plans to soon begin flock integration with the main flock.  We have now also separated Buddy and Joe from the ducks.  While not seen here Buddy has accepted her straw house and was burying eggs just minutes after I finished up today, of course that is what … Continue reading →

The Duck Chronicles Episodes 21 and 22

The Survival Podcast Posted on February 16, 2015 by Modern SurvivalFebruary 16, 2015

On The Duck Chronicles Episode Twenty One – 50 Ducks on the Run we have a lot going on at the homestead and we show you exactly what the effect of our ducks browsing is.  This is something you should do when grazing any animal to really know how much of the vegetation is being grazed. The ducks also really seem to like the wood chip sheet mulch for just hanging out and resting. I also talk about stripping leaves on fruit trees that don’t go fully dormant.  Something I learned from Kuffel Creek Apple Orchard.  I planted a lot … Continue reading →
