While I've had some worries for quite a while, it wasn't until I got serious about considering what could realistically happen in my area that I realized how absolutely unprepared I was for anything. At that point, my knee-jerk reaction was to spend a grand on cases of beans, water purifiers, MREs, etc. But, I've held back and just made it a lifestyle thing. I've been trying to motivate several members of my family to start "setting back" some essentials, but it's hard to get them to listen sometimes. People don't like to think about what may happen, it upsets the balance of their everyday lives. All I can do is my best.
