Why We Prepare - The Lesson of the Grasshopper and the Ant [35:25m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | DownloadToday we discuss why survivalists are "preparing" in the first place. Starting out with an old fable we tell the original version of The Lesson of the Grasshopper and the Ant and move on to seven threats and how the prepping for them all is quite similar.
Tune in today to hear…
- How we have changed the classic tale of the Ant and the Grasshopper and how it has impacted America
- The real threat of depression or recession
- The reality of a true eventual economic collapse
- The impact of "climate change" independent of man’s part in it
- The fact that "normal climate" is a myth and the little "perfect bubble" we have had for two centuries
- The impact potential of pandemic flu or some other form of pandemic
- The impact of regional weather disasters
- The threat of a Tsunami on both our east and west coasts
- The eventuality of "peak oil"
- How "Preppers" are not crazy and why what we do makes sense
- The contributions of the "tin foil hat brigade" and how even they are not totally crazy
- The reality that preparing for all the above threats is very similar

I’m not an ant yet, but I’m working on it! Another good podcast. It’s good to be reminded why we try to live this lifestyle and to encourage others to do the same. It’s easy to get complacent and live the ‘easy life’, which is tenuous at best.

You made some great points on today’s show.
I’ve been trying to motivate several members of my family to start “setting back” some essentials, but it’s hard to get them to listen sometimes. People don’t like to think about what may happen, it upsets the balance of their everyday lives.
All I can do is my best.
Once again, great show!

The hardest part for me has been this transitional period from grasshopper to ant. While I’ve had some worries for quite a while, it wasn’t until I got serious about considering what could realistically happen in my area that I realized how absolutely unprepared I was for anything.
At that point, my knee-jerk reaction was to spend a grand on cases of beans, water purifiers, MREs, etc. But, I’ve held back and just made it a lifestyle thing. Buy a little extra and tuck it away.

Jack,
I like your common sense approach to each of your shows.

As always, a great show! I’m intentionally a couple shows behind just in case another gap ever shows up. I guess I’m saving up the episodes for when times get tough. Or even if they don’t. =-P
