Episode-32- TSP Rewind – Five Lies That Attack Liberty — 8 Comments

  1. Awesome podcast, really awesome episode. I’m definitely not a prepper, but I am a homeowner and a libertarian, and as soon as I pay off my home I plan on buying a ranch out in the Texas Hill Country, and I really like the idea of having a kind of home base. I’m a millennial, but I am sick and tired of hearing my peers complain about how hard it is to get by and I get frustrated because I’m doing just fine and I don’t do anything exceptional. I moved out right after high school joined the Air Force a year out of high school, and now I work a tier two data entry job during the day and a bus tables at a really high end restaurant. These are jobs just about anyone can do. I’m not that special. And I’m happy and I’m providing for myself and my wife everything we need. Its so refreshing to hear this podcast. Thank you for putting this up.

    • “I’m a millennial, but I am sick and tired of hearing my peers complain about how hard it is to get by and I get frustrated because I’m doing just fine and I don’t do anything exceptional.”

Many of our peers may have student debt, or have not served and thus do not have lifetime health coverage from the military. It’s a reality that can add $500-600 of additional monthly expenses. Many have a hard time keeping their head above water.

You also can’t really blame most Millennials for growing up being told that their lot in life is to get a college degree, so that they can then get a good job with benefits and a retirement plan (which grow scarcer). From my anecdotal experience, no one ever really taught us about the merits of being an entrepreneur, questioning the status quo, or setting out to build our own individual future. Parents, teachers, authority figures… they always pointed us down a linear path.

Most of our peers are up shit creek without a paddle, holding a broken compass.

  2. I certainly sympathize with the problems they have, it’s more the attitude I take issue with. The reason they are struggling is because they only want a job in their field, or like was said in the podcast, they feel they are above doing the kind of work that might get them out of their situation, which is ridiculous because even though they have a degree, it’s a liberal arts degree and they have no marketable skills to speak of.

Why would someone hire you for a job with your degree in english, history, or poly sci? How does that qualify you to do anything in the real world, especially when there are so many identical resumes with little to no job experience. So they’re pissed when they can’t find the kind of job they were promised, but they aren’t willing to start from scratch.

If you can make an extra $1500 a month bussing tables at a steakhouse working 20 hours a week extra, why wouldn’t you? Yet we always need help because few people apply for the job and even fewer stick with it. My father worked two jobs in his twenties, so didn’t my grandfather and his father before him. This is what men do. They provide.

There’s ALWAYS a solution, even if it’s driving uber on the side, or walking people’s dogs, or making things and selling them in an online store. You could buy tickets to sporting events you know will sell out and sell them on StubHub or SeatGeek at a marked up rate. We need construction workers, welders, and garbage men. We need HVAC technicians and mechanics. While we have far too many people applying for office work, there is a huge shortage of manual labor. There are so many solutions to this problem, but instead of looking at their situation and saying, “how am I going to make things better?”

They sit around wondering when the government is going to make things better. And the truth is that anything the government does is going to fall short and is going to require increased taxes. Government works best when it just stays out of the way. Didn’t Reagan used to say that the most terrifying words in the English language are “I’m from the government and I’m here to help”?

    • Expect your generation to hate you and expect that their children will be employed by you.

Such truth in your words you are doomed to be hated.

    • I agree with you there. I have a degree that has gotten me nothing, because I used to believe the lie. I wasn’t until September of 2015 that I finally pulled my head out of my ass and started driving for Uber to supplement my meager office job income. I moved the hell out of California and now work from home independently as a freelancer and also drive for Postmates about 15 hours a week. This podcast inspired me to start designing my own business and if all goes according to plan, I’ll have it running in about 5 years.

Skilled workers are needed and it an ugly truth that many of our peers can’t even change a tire, much less work on a car. That’s all I’ll say about that.

I know people with the same attitude as the people you speak of and I get your frustration. Hits me on the regular when I see our peers express themselves in ways only a lifetime of brainwashing can do. Suppose I’ll be reiterating here, but you can’t blame someone who has been lied to their whole lives for believing the lie.

I do also see people waking up as well. With the internet, we are better informed as to how and when the government is pissing away our tax dollars in pursuit of corporate welfare and warfare, among other things. And since Trump is such a polarizing figure, maybe now more than ever more millennials might start to see through the BS of statism. Everyone is paying attention. I think our role in all of this is to do what we do and live by example. We need to show our peers a better way to live. It’s up to them if they want to do it.

  3. Just starting to listen to the episode. Personally, I _love_ the rewind episodes. I have been a listener since the late 1400’s, and I like hearing what I’ve missed. those of you who have been with Jack since the Jetta Days, please remember the newbies, and allow us the rewinds so tha we can come up to speed.

    Thanks!
