Episode-2010- Nicole Sauce on Building Local Demand in a Niche Market

Nicole Sauce has had side hustles going her whole life. She developed a love of good food – and great coffee – in the Pacific Northwest. She started her career as a high school teacher, but quickly realized that system was so broken that she needed to do something more meaningful.

After 8 years of executive coaching for expatriates, Nicole discovered a world of libertarian policy think tanks and her life changed. For 13 years, Nicole has worked with policy organizations that seek to make government smaller. However, working in the system against the system accepts their rules. Along the way, she fled the intolerance of Oregon for a more hospitable Tennessee.

Nicole loves showing people how to do forgotten homesteading arts such as canning and preserving, cheese-making, meat processing and more.

For five years, Nicole has roasted coffee and earlier this year she launched the Holler Roast brand alongside her podcast, Living Free in Tennessee. She and her fella run a local tourism focused paper called The Center Hill Sun and a small homestead.   She joins us today to discuss building a local market based niche business.

Visit JillElisabeth.net to learn More About Jill’s Journey.

I say all the time that the end of the world as we know it (TEOTWAWKI) happens to many people at the individual level ever day, as it did one day four years ago for today’s guest Jill Elizabeth.

Indeed for some, the end of the world has already come and Jill is one of those who prepared but found herself starting over after losing her house, job, retirement, and desire to rebuild a life in the old system. What then happened has been an 8 year journey about survival, purpose, and meaning.

Having spent over 20 years as a licensed social worker was good preparation for living in a tiny trailer traveling the southwest and discovering real survival is more about who you are and working with others than the stuff you have with you.

Almost four years later survival has taken on a whole new meaning and the discovery that there is tremendous opportunity available for those who want to think outside the system and build something new – or old!

Jill has in the last few years shoveled more manure than she can weigh, built websites, made videos, started a podcast, written several books, counted cows, told her story a million times and worked with others to tell theirs as a key marketing tool. There’s a lot more, but a little mystery is a good thing!

Episode-1276- Beth Warford of PrettyLoaded.Org

Beth and Family of PrettyLoaded.Org

Beth and Family of PrettyLoaded.Org

Beth is the founder and owner of Pretty Loaded. Her husband has been a listener of TSP since 2008 and she has listened to many TSP episodes over the years. She has had specialized ICU and Sedation experience in numerous Children’s Hospitals which has given her extensive experience performing under life and death moment stress.

Beth has had 18 years of concealed carry experience, and has been thankful for that opportunity, especially working off hours and in less than safe conditions in urban areas as a young nurse. She is married and has 4 wonderful young girls, lives on a homestead, practices a traditional “real food” Paleo lifestyle, is an organic produce farmer with 28 laying hens, and is CFO for a local health care practice owned by her husband.

Beth has had significant firearms training with an NRA Certified instructor and more specialized defensive training with Fortress Defense Consultants.

She is also an avid upland game hunter and has a private shooting range for honing her skills. She is a NRA certified instructor in the disciplines of Pistol Instructor and Personal Protection In the Home (first and currently only female certified in this discipline in ND) as well as Affiliate Instructor for the United States Concealed Carry Association. She has had extensive Krav Maga training as well and partners with a Master in Krav Maga for martial arts training for her clients.

Beth’s inspiration to start Pretty Loaded came from numerous female friends asking Beth to teach them to use a firearm and basic defense mentality. Although she’s a “the glass is half full” kind of person, she believes in the mantra “it’s better to have the skills and not need them than need the skills and not have them” and doesn’t take the safety of she and her family for granted.

Beth credits her training from Fortress Defense mentors as being critical in focusing her vision on the importance of training women specifically. Her husband, being a student of defense, combat, and firearms for 20 years has always been vigilant and supportive of her development as a skilled and empowered woman.

Beth feels women need to learn situational awareness, self defense mindset skills, and basic firearms training to be fully well rounded in defensive skills. Her goal is to create Women Warriors to protect themselves and their loved ones from the low life thugs that walk our streets and force their evil upon unwanted victims.

Episode-1238- Jenna Woginrich from The One Woman Farm

Jenna Woginrich - Of The One Woman Farm

Jenna Woginrich – Of The One Woman Farm

Jenna Woginrich is an author, homesteader, archer, and falconer-in-training. Two summers ago she left her corporate office gig to focus on the farm full-time and now runs a 6.5 acre homestead by herself south of the Adirondacks in Washington County, NY.

There she grows most of her own food; raises her own meat, dairy, veggies and eggs with the aid of animal power. Horses pull firewood from the forest, a sheepdog manages the livestock, hawks are trained to take small game, and carts and saddles are used as much as her dented pickup truck.

She’s passionate about self-reliance, martial arts, hunting, tracking, horses, and traditional and country skills. She’s also the business owner of Cold Antler Farm, an educational homestead where people travel from all over the world to take classes in everything from beginner fiddle to herbalism.

Her new book, One Woman Farm, has been described as follows by Joel Salatin, “Read this book to learn why farmsteads need to be loved.  Jenna’s One-Woman Farm is a jewel: small and lustrous.”

Episode-1162- Women of Prepping Series Episode 6

The real image of a "prepper family", not what the TV tells us is it?

The real image of a “prepper family”, not what the TV tells us is it?

Nicole H. is a Weston A. Price chapter leader and a wanna-be-homesteader. She makes kombucha, kefir, yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream, granola, all bread products, custard, cakes, pies, sauces, etc..

She personally finds it easy to have one year’s worth of food (except fresh things like veggies, eggs, milk, meat, etc) on hand at all times because of the way she cooks. Nichole’s family is planning a move to a homestead/farmette where they will have their own chickens, bees, cows and other animals in the future.

Currently they purchase these products (meat, milk, eggs, honey, etc.) from an Amish farmer through a co-op that delivers to their home, which means they very rarely need to go to the store. Her family is also planning to build a permaculture food forest on their new land once they move.

Nicole joins us as the 6th batter up in our prepping from the female perspective series, with some nutrition thrown in.  We also discuss how a vision for “prepping” took she and her husband from an adversarial relationship about money to being totally united about finances.

Lori Caraballo is the founder of “Prepper Chicks ~ Preparing for Survival From a  Girl’s Point of View”  She is also a wife and the mother of 5 great kids along with  being a full time business woman and entrepreneur.

Today Lori joins us in our 5th installment of prepping from a woman’s point of view.  We begin with what got her into  into “hardcore prepping” and why she feels prepping is actually a very natural thing for a woman to want to do.   We even discuss alternatives to feminine hygiene, not something most men want to talk about, but a real need of concern in a grid down situation.

We also discuss some of the unquire situations for women when it comes to self defense.  Weapons training for women that acknowledges our phyical differences, or in Lori’s words, “drawing a gun with your boobs in the way”.

We then move on to how she has been able to sneak preparedness into your kids lives and talk to others about it without coming off like a tin foil hatter.  We finish up with how she got her husband mostly on board.

Episode-1139- Women of Prepping Series Episode Three

Paula Hradkowsky (rad cow ski) is a 60 year old semi retired former CPA that became a prepper only 5 years ago.  She was raised in a typical middle class household where self reliance was really considered something poor people did.

Here parents were both part of the WWII and Depression eras and had tough childhoods.  Like many such individuals they worked hard to make sure their kids had a better life then they did.

Fortunately for Paula the experiences of her parents childhood did get planted as a seed inside of her at an early age, though she never realized it until much later in life.  She listened to talk radio discuss problems for years, yet seldom discuss individualized solutions, only political banter.  In 2008 as a woman approaching retirement age she watched the financial recession do a ton of damage.  This woke her up and reconnected her with that seed planted in her by parents who had lived though it all before.

In the last five years she has flipped her spouse to the prepping lifestyle.  They now both have concealed carry permits, plenty of stored food and water, stored fuel, two generators and a small garden.  Paula has also been on a paleo style diet for 16 years now and it has been the only thing to help with a chronic health issue she has known as Lupus.

She joins us today as the third batter in our Woman of Prepping Series to discuss prepping from an woman’s view, with some amazing insights in how you can get your spouse on board.  Men the way she answers my final question is worth the entire episode three times over, tune in and get some wisdom on how to talk to your wife about prepping that will really hit home.
