Sam Coffman of The Human Path

Sam Coffman of The Human Path

Sam Coffman is the founder and director at The Human Path – a survival school in the central Texas area that teaches a wide array of skills.  Such as urban and wilderness survival to wilderness first aid, tactics, tracking and naturalist studies, homesteading, intentional communities, tactics and self-defense, tracking, off-grid engineering, plant medicine and much more.

Sam is also co-founder of Herbal Medics – a non-profit organization with the goal of teaching and using plant medicine and self-sustainability concepts (off-grid engineering, in remote, post-disaster and inner-city areas. Sam’s medical background started as a U.S. Special Forces (a.k.a. “Green Beret”) medic in 1989, during which time he began learning and using plant medicine as a backup form of medicine in remote and field environments.

Since that time, aside from 1000’s of clinical hours in the field and emergency rooms as a Special Forces Medic, he has also worked as a clinical herbalist and teacher. He currently directs courses at his survival and herbology school as well as leading clinical trips with his non-profit Herbal Medics which include his own integrated herbal medic teams, local doctors and naturopaths, as well as US allopathic surgeons, doctors, nurses, and medical students.

Sam Coffman grew up exploring and learning about wilderness camping and woodcraft at a very early age, as his family spent summers in isolated self-supporting wilderness camps due to his father’s job as a field geologist.

Additionally, he had an avid interest in martial arts from the age of 13. He has taught wilderness survival, tactics, self-defense and field medicine for the military as well as federal and local law enforcement agencies. With over 10 years in the military, Sam worked as a linguist (German), an interrogator and a Special Forces Medic.

Episode-1218- Airsoft and Airguns for Training (orig epi 126)

Today is the first of quite a few TSP Classic episodes that will be coming in October.  Consider that this month I have the following events and you will understand why.

  • Oct 3-11 I am in Colorado for vacation and the Self Reliance Expo
  • Oct 15-20 I am running the Urban Permaculture Workshop at our homestead
  • Oct 25-27 I will be in Louisiana for the earth works workshop as a guest instructor

That is 18 out of 31 days, so I gotta do it.  But I plan to make it fun, a lot of fun and the shows will have new introductions, the history segments and comments setting the old episodes in current context.

Today we discuss Airsoft and Airguns for training.  Given the current cost of ammo I felt that this episode was very timely considering when I recorded it ammo was in three words, abundant and cheap.

Wednesday and Thursday this week will be new episodes and we should have a typical Friday show recorded before we leave.

Also today I cover a bit about the non event everyone is freaking out about, the “government shut down”.

Tune in today to hear…

  • Some of the different options in Airsoft weapons from spring to gas to AEG (automatic electric guns) we give an over view of them all
  • The value of all metal gas blow back airsoft pistols for training new shooters in practical pistol applications
  • How Airsoft can let you shoot more often, right at home and for less money so you stay sharp
  • Why even those “cheap plastic spring pistols” have a lot of value as training aids
  • The accuracy of reproduction of may airsoft weapons and how it accelerates the learning curve for new shooters
  • The unique safety advantages of a brand new shooter that makes coach a better coach
  • Using airsoft to replace fear of firearms with respect for them
  • Taking the step up to conventional air guns and their additional advantages and disadvantages
  • Thoughts about moving new shooters from airsoft into rim and then eventually center fire shooting
  • How spreading the sport of shooting and responsible firearms ownership protects the second amendment

Episode-1118- Lou Hayes on 6 Core Tactical Skills

Lou Hayes of theillinoismodel.com

Lou Hayes of theillinoismodel.com

Lou Hayes is a full-time municipal police officer (15yrs), SWAT officer (13yrs) and trainer (12yrs). He sits on a large Statewide tactical officers organization.

Lou provides instructions on weapons, tactics, law, command, rescue, active shooter response and area searches (K9).

He and his partner have developed a fully-integrated system to train these items together, rather than in isolated fragments.

Lou and his partner teach these as part of a program around the State to various police trainers and officers.

Today we discuss six core tactical team skills. They are:

  • Priority of Fire
  • CrossFire
  • Flanking
  • Cover-Maneuver
  • Back-to-Back
  • Cross-Clearing.

These six skills are the root of ALL team movements, formations, or positions. They are combined into applications such as: patrolling, bounding overwatch, room entry, building clearing, searching, perimeter functions, site security.

These team skills are being applied to preppers trying to train small communities of shooters who plan to work together on security or post-SHTF living.  Today we compare these six skills to “simple machines” (wedge, screw, wheel and lever) that combine into all other machines.
