Episode-69- Getting your spouse on board with survival planning

Today’s show was created by quite a few, “how do I get my spouse” (or girlfriend, boyfriend, fiance) on board with preparing and doing what needs to be done in order to live that better life?   Honestly that question has been asked by almost as many women as men, hence if you are on either side of the equasion then you are not alone.  Rather then typical show notes I will simply provide my 21 rules discussed in today’s show and suggest that you not only use them in conversation but ask you spouse to take 40 minutes to listen to this episode and perhaps some others as well.

The 21 Rules of Getting a Spouse On Board with Survival Planning and Prepping are.

  1. Demand or insist upon nothing.
  2. Ask for help where you are weak and your partner is strong.
  3. Demonstrate a command of the facts and threats, don’t alarm but inform.
  4. Arrive at all decisions as a team, at least if it is in anyway possible.
  5. Don’t put your “pet items” at the top of any proposed priority.
  6. Explain that this is for the good of the family.
  7. Focus on saving money and elimination of debt as step one.
  8. Explain the investment value of food and saving money, leave bullets and band aids for later.
  9. Talk about a “better life style” for less cost and why you want that for both or you.
  10. Discuss the future and not waiting until you are 65-80 to really spend time together.
  11. Do not get over excited; don’t dump too much at one time.Start with a simple vision and a few small steps.
  12. Make the discussion about “us” not you, not them but truly both of us.
  13. Don’t expect a perfect result and a totally on board agreement.
  14. Do have a single small step to suggest and ask if you can do it together.
  15. Try to get your spouse to suggest a second small step and embrace it and do it with them.
  16. Work on creating a common vision of a truly happy and sustainable life.
  17. Don’t focus on what you don’t mean (cammo, militia, communes, etc.) just answer concerns that are offered.
  18. Be positive about the future for your family, compare prepping to life insurance.
  19. Ask “what would we do if” and listen to the answers you get and discuss them.
  20. Talk a little, get them talking and listen as if your life depended on hearing every word, because it does.
  21. Share my show with them along with this particular podcast.

Episode-68- 850 Billion to the Bail Out – Now What’s Next?

So I went on vacation and came back to the following reality, the bail out came at 150 billion more then it started out, the Fed is buying up junk paper on its’ own and the Dow Average declined below 10,000 for the first time since December of 2003.  So what’s next?  What do we do now?

The short answer is continute to prepare, continue to save and continue to above all not panic.

Episode-36- The Value of a Garden and Do You Want the Crash

Today’s podcast is a short one on two quite different subjects.  In the first segment we discuss the actual financial value of a small home garden.  The numbers are quite surprising with even a very modest garden producing well over 500 dollars a year in food based on current supermarket pricing.  With a bit more examination we discuss how it could easily move up to 1,000-1,500 dollars.    Then further how a bit of permaculture can ratchet it up to 2,500 dollars or more even on small suburban lots.

I then ask the question, “does some part of you want the collapse to come”?  Is there a piece of most survivalists that actually looks forward to a major economic or other collapse.?  If so what does that say about the current state of affairs in the world?  Also does it say something to us about the way most of us are continuing to choose to live our lives?  I am really interested in hearing your answers to those and similar questions.

Episode-34- Seven Highly Underated Survival Skills You Should Develop

In today’s podcast we cover seven skill sets that are often either overlooked or under appreciated by many survival minded individuals. Tune in today as we discuss..

  • How and why you should gain the skill of carpentry as part of your survival planning
  • The challenges we may face in a “barter economy” created either by disaster or design
  • The actual “skill of gardening” and why you need to start developing it today
  • Why learning how to sell and barter is a necessary survival skill
  • Why many people really need to brush up on basic map reading and even a “sense of direction”
  • Developing the skills for proper long term food storage
  • Learning and developing the skills behind many primitive cooking methods
  • Developing logic and organizational skills

Episode-33- The Unique Challanges of Economic Collapse Survival Planning

Today’s podcast focuses on the unique challenges of surviving an economic collapse and how it is very different from environmental or other disasters in scope, duration and impact. Tune in today for my thoughts on…

  • Planning for long term self sufficiency vs. planning for an acute interruption of short duration
  • The need to eliminate debt as part of long term planning, specifically debt on property
  • The need for prearranged groups before the economic SHTF
  • The need to NOT “bet the farm” in your long term planning
  • How FEMA nor any other organization can’t respond to an economic collapse
  • Why storing food is important but not enough
  • How your cash could become worth next to nothing in a true economic crash
  • Gaining specific skills before you need them
  • Storing construction supplies and other “hard comities” now vs. planning to buy them later
  • Hardening property and picking remote easy to defend locations
  • The value of the family dog in keeping trespassers away
  • A few reasons that an economic collapse may simply be an eventuality vs. a possibility

Episode-30- Is it Time for a “New” Civilian Militia

Is it time to organize a new civilian militia? No not the camo wearing paramilitary type but a true “civilian” dedicated to assisting first responders and local law enforcement. I am not looking to lead or spearhead this concept just get a dialog going about the concept and some ways I think we can change the preception of exactly what militia means and make it a badge of honor vs. a separatist concept with the mainstream population.

Here is the outline I used for this show, there is some redundency in it. My hope is that discussion groups and forums will begin discussing this concept and it may or may not take off. Either way I think it is a conversation worth having.

My Outline

Civilian Militia

  1. National Level Organization
  2. Complies with all local, state and federal laws
  3. Marketed as a force for assistance, not anti government
  4. Main objective – to provide assistance and additional security at times when law enforcement, emergency responders and other organizations are stretched to their limits
  5. Armed is an individual choice but is subject to all laws
  6. Each local branch will register or notify or some how be on record with local law enforcement and possibly other emergency responders
  7. Any uniform devised should be “non militant” though there may need to be a militant division of some sort
  8. Training focused on
    a.Communications and Reporting
    b.First Aid
    c.Supply Distribution
    d.Working with emergency responders
e.Use of non lethal force for the protection of civilians
  9. National Organization governed as a “Constitutional Republic” including a judiciary committee
  10. Membership should have some “dues” associated with it, annual and low.
  11. Should focus on recruiting, current and prior service law enforcement, prior service military, professionals in various disciplines, EMTs-etc.,

Part Two – The Marketing Plan

  1. Recruit professionals with a background in marketing, sales and public speaking – make them the voice of the company.
  2. Position the organization as a “helper” to local law enforcement, emergency responders and local charities.
  3. Make membership on par with membership or association with the Salvation Army, Red Cross or Rotary Club.
  4. Invite law enforcement personal to all meetings (most often they won’t show up).
  5. No videos, pictures, etc of camo clad para military personal
  6. Mission statement – “To observe, report and notify first, to intervene only when absolutely necessary and then as a “concerned citizen”.
  7. Any firearm use and or carry will be done as a “citizen”, in other words a CCP holder carries during “service” because he/she always carries.
  8. Strict code of ethics – violations of them result in termination of membership.
  9. No military ranks, – Sgt, Col, etc.Replace with things like Member, Organizing Member, Neighborhood Coordinator, Regional Coordinator, etc.

While the above outline is useful it may be necessary to listen to this show in full to avoid misunderstandings. NOTE – I have no issues with existing militias and I support their right to exist and in general the work they do as patriots.

I just believe there is an opportunity to create a new type of militia that can help local communities in times of need and I also belive there would be a ton of interest in joining such an organization for many individuals if they had the option.

My plan is by NO MEANS perfect or complete, I simply am submitting it to the community as one possible starting point for a new organization that may be seriously needed in the coming uncertain times. It is humbly submitted to the survivalist and self sufficiency community as a concept for discussion.

Episode-29- Setting and Prioritizing Survival Planning Goals

The key to getting truly prepared for anything is planning, today’s show is two lessons in one with prioritizing goals to a get a mission accomplished. To get on track and explain the logic of my system of planning I first go over the “debt snowball” which has been made popular by syndicated radio personality Dave Ramsey.

Tune in today as we discuss

  • The mentality behind the debt snowball and how that same mentality can be applied to survival planning
  • Ranking and listing the threats that are most likely to impact your life
  • How to do a personal threat assessment and rank your biggest needs
  • Finding the top five needs for your top five threats
  • How to build momentum and motivation as you move toward full preparedness
  • The reality that will lead both the out and out fringe survivalist and the basic boyscout to very similar plans

The goal of this show is to move beyond analysis paralisis into a real meaningful level of action and avoid feeling overwhelmed by all there is to do. Please add in your own comments and suggestions, remember our show is one man’s opinion not a lecture. Your input is not just welcome but a necessary part of making our show a little better every day.
